Derek Willis arrested?

I won't go into a lot of detail here. But I am very familiar with kentucky laws. He could have been charged with DUI. Probably would have been amended down to AI which is what his charge actually is. Everyone saying Public Intoxication is wrong. That would be under the influence of a narcotic or prescription drug.

The officer that arrested him did cut him a huge break here.

Been in similar situations as Derek many times. If he knew that he was in Northern Kentucky, he wasn't that drunk.

Could he have a medical condition whose symptoms mimic intoxication?
if that were the case, it would have manifested before now. At least, I believe it would have.
honestly, doubt it
Derek got drunk, no excuses, no other explanations

You drinking didnt matter ..you're a nobody..Willis is held to a higher standard ..We dont need boneheads getting drunk in public....You think the NBA is not watching
Yes, because the NBA is full of upstanding citizens who don't drink, smoke, cheat, abuse etc

And who is talking about NBA anyways. So many people want Willis to be something he's not.

Its been a long time since I was in traffic school (I was there for speeding not DUI) but the instructor indicated you can get a DUI just for having access and the ability to drive a car. Just having the keys in proximity to the vehicle would be enough to qualify. Also fun fact pointed out in that class, you can apparently get a DUI on roller skates or skateboard. How accurate that is, I have no idea.
Did some reading on that. Your statement should cme with some caveats. They can use circumstantial evidence to prove you were in fact driving while under the influence. You could be standing by the car after driving or you could be standing by the car waiting on your designated driver to get there. It sure sounds like Derek was dui.

He certainly could have been. But someone has to have some level of sobriety to operate a vehicle in the first place.

Just saying - if he was so drunk that he would pass out on the ground as soon as he opened the car door, good chance he was physically too drunk to drive in the first place.

He might have gone to the car to retrieve something.

He might have sat in the car on the phone, and something in his subconscious told him he needed to get out of the car.

He could have been driving, but I'm not sure we know enough yet to make that judgement.

I can't believe this is even considered news. Willis got caught doing what every college student does every weekend while in college. To me it's not even worth the post count this thread will lead to. If you think Willis is the only Kentucky basketball player that has been drunk while playing for the wildcats i don't know what to tell you. It does suck the kid got caught. Some are saying the kid will learn and move on from this. Learn what? Learn how not to get caught being drunk? This doesn't hurt any in the leadership department. If we were talking DUI, it would be a totally different matter. We're not. He wasn't drunk driving so it's no big deal. I'm sure Cal will be pc about it and find a proper punishment to make everyone happy, but in the back of Cal's mind, i'm sure he's thinking "DONT GET CAUGHT NEXT TIME!". I know we all think these Kentucky basketball players are more than just kids, but then something like this happens and you find out they really are just kids.

I'm sure UK has a policy for situations like this.

I'm quite sure that at the least, Willis will be coming into this season in the best cardio shape of his life.

Passed out drunk on the ground outside a driver's side of a car a 4 am is not a good place to be, regardless of age. There are no good excuses for that, again, regardless of age.

If what KSR is reporting is true, that he was found laying outside of the open drivers side door of the car, then let's just hope the car had not been driven while he was in that state. If he was drinking and driving, then he should be off the team. Yeah the team up the road would just sweep this under the rug. I don't want us to be anything like that team.
Willis can hit the 3 ball. There will little to no issues with this once the season starts. Not sure why anyone is getting up in arms over it.

So do the people who say no big deal also think that will be Cals position?

Just so we're clear?

This is probably what he is pissed about the most. He probably laid down the gauntlet to the freshman saying " I can't hide you here, on or off the court". Now his main senior just did something stupid.

It might turn out to be a great teaching tool for Everyone involved

With the details out now, it's likely he had driven or was intending to. He deserves some pretty harsh punishment. Most college kids are going to drink. I did. They all do. But, this is far worse than the cops stopping a party around campus and him having a beer in his hand. Obviously it's important he's able to learn and earn back trust. Punishment needs to be harsh but not life changing like being kicked off the team. Mistakes no matter how bad deserve to be forgiven.

Not sure if many folks know the rules for DUI, but he charged with PI. If he was in his car at all and had the keys with him, it is technically a DUI.
Since he was not charged with it, and we were not there, chalk it up to he was not in the car or did not have his keys. Therefore no intent to drive was determined by the police.

When it was public intoxication, everyone was in line with your thinking. Once it came out that he was lying on the ground, in the street, next to the car with the drivers side door open, people took it a little more serious. I don't know about you, but I would say there are very few college students who have been found by the cops in that situation.

Agree...not a smart move by Derek...so Bullit County.
At least if you are going to bash Bullitt County and Derek Willis....learn to spell Bullitt County correctly.
Some of the nicest people I have ever met are from there and it makes you sound like a pious snob. Just curious which county in Ky you think so much more highly of than Bullitt???

As a UK fan, I hate this for Derrick as a person and for what it does publicly for UK and its fans.
For me, this is a personal matter between Derrick, the courts, and UK.
I wish I could say names on here, but for the sake of my business, I just cannot do so. I could tell stories about certain athletes from UL and what I have seen over the years.

I am talking about seeing stuff that would put these kids in big trouble. Drinking? What ever. These kids fill their freezers up anytime mom, dad show up. I cannot count the number to times I had to drag hung over players out of their beds to get them to clean up the back yard. Hundreds of beer cans, liquor bottles, girls panties ( all boys house), bongs, you name it.
Some of these kids have names that are very well known I might add.
This is college kids learning about life. These same kids I see for months getting up at 4:30 and heading out to be on the field for a 5 am practice. They work their butts off.

I say we cut Derrick some slack and let the chips fall where they fall. I do not know what Coach Cal does, but I have seen many a player run from the bottom of Papa Johns to the top till they puke. He is a kid and kids make mistakes. The bigger question is not what he did, but does he learn from this and become a better person and hopefully learn to hide stupid stuff like this from everyone but the maintenance man.

I think Cal put him up to this, so he could show the Fr. how not to act...lol But seriously only a $50 bail?? I had to pay like $300.00 for Boone Cty, but that was for a DUI.

I was responding to this info from a courier journal article.

"According to the arrest citation provided by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy was dispatched to Mountain Laurel Way in Union, Ky., because of a possible drunk subject "laying in the middle of the street." The deputy arrived to find Willis on the ground outside the open driver’s side door of a vehicle and reported a "strong odor of associated with alcohol" coming from the inside of the vehicle and Willis.

The deputy reported Willis said he had "a lot" to drink and could not advise where he was other to say in "northern Kentucky" after being woken up. The citation reports Willis had extremely slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and "was a danger to himself and others.""

It's still possible he wasn't dui, I hope he wasn't.

I have no inside info. That "strong odor of alcohol" statement is something police say. Not saying there was or wasn't a strong odor of alcohol, but those guys know what to say to make their report look good.

For that matter, he could have been sitting in his car drinking without driving in it. Or someone could have spilled something.

The street he was on is residential. He would have had to make a couple of turns off the main road to get there.

To me, that looks like he could have been at a party on the street. Possibly went out to his car for some reason and passed out drunk.

If he were passed out next to his car on a main highway, it would look pretty certain as DUI. With what we know here, I would say more like 50/50.

Not a good look either way, but I would have to see a little more info before I said he was probably driving.

No big deal.....kids in college drink. Not like it was a felony or anything.
Agreed. At least he didn't beat up his girlfriend's dad over a hairbrush.
Can someone explain it. Does this mean he was just drunk?? Or to get arrested to you have to belligerent? Or disturbing the peace?

I plead ignorance. He's 21 correct?
It can depend on the cop/situation. Yes, belligerence often plays a role, but urinating in public, being passed out, cop could have been a bearcat fan, vomiting on a cop's shoes, not leaving a scene when directed...things I've seen people getting hauled in for(except the bearcat cop).
