The statements were about his transformation last year from the first half of the season to the second half when he was given the role of starter when Poythress went down with injury. Yes he was injured during the Indiana game, I'll give him that, but his effort and focus was still terrible that game. Just look at it if you can stomach it (I don't like to watch replays of our losses). If you go back and look at the one 3 he took he wasn't even set and just chucked it, it had no chance of going in. And yes, it is proper etiquette to smile, you got me there. :D

If he truly was found on the ground next to the open drivers side door of a car, then he more than likely was driving while intoxicated or at least planning to. I don't care if he was charged with a DUI, if he drove while intoxicated he should be severely punished. I am fine with UK suspending any player that drinks and drives for the entire season.

If driving drunk, yes. It should be severe. I lost a college friend that was rival football player to drunk driving. He was the passenger in the car. Both were drunk. Very disappointed if Willis drove while intoxicated.

Derek, how could you be so stupid? It's one thing to have a few beers, but it sounds like he was completely plastered, and maybe attempting to drive? Forget the embarrassment factor; if he had gotten behind the wheel someone could have been injured, or worse.
I don't think he's a bad kid, but he made one hell of a bad mistake; and he's old enough to know better than this. I don't know what he deserves as far as discipline goes - but it does need to be harsh enough to teach a lesson.

Sorry guys, but I'm thoroughly pissed at him right now.

Cal doesn't give up on his kids. Look back at Jeremy hunt. He took a lot of crap but made Jeremy hunt put in the work and show discipline and character.


That incident was waaaay worse than this This will either wake Willis up or crush him. Cal will put it in his corner to make the right decisions going forward. Jeremy hunt wasn't so fortunate. After getting back on track and making something of himself in school and on the court , he went right back down that road again a few years later

One look at the mugshot confirms he was plastered , there's no sounds like to it . You just don't get that face from a few beers , he was all out drunk and there is no doubt .

Somebody commented at KSR saying that unless UK has changed its policy, he will be done. Anybody know what he is referring to?

Derek's issue is both better and worse than Makayla Epps. Her crime was underage drinking and an open container in the vehicle. She was suspended a couple of games if I remember correctly. I would expect a similar outcome this time.

Was he saved a much worse outcome by being outside the vehicle? I don't know Kentucky's laws, but I know in some places, just being in the car intoxicated, even if the car is off, can get you a DUI.

Its been a long time since I was in traffic school (I was there for speeding not DUI) but the instructor indicated you can get a DUI just for having access and the ability to drive a car. Just having the keys in proximity to the vehicle would be enough to qualify. Also fun fact pointed out in that class, you can apparently get a DUI on roller skates or skateboard. How accurate that is, I have no idea.

If you're in the drivers seat and the keys are in the ignition, I believe that is the case. The car doesn't have to actually be running. Doesn't sound like any of that is relevant here though, since he was outside the vehicle. PI/AI I couldn't really care less about personally, though it looks bad to get arrested for anything. Make him run till he pukes, maybe suspend him for a game since, afaik it's his first offense. DUI, otoh, would be a bigger deal but one that isn't in play here.

I remember being passed out in the parking lot at an apartment building one New Years Eve. I was beside a car but I wasn't trying to drive, I was trying to get some fresh air, got outside, sat down for a minute and one thing led to another. Luckily my buddies found me, not the cops.

My guess is Cal will point-blank ask him if he was drinking and driving, if he says yes,
I could see him being suspended for a semester.

I agree. Haven't seen certain folks on this board this worked up over Willis since he and his girlfriend were expecting a child.

I'll never chastise a college aged person for drinking. I did my fair share in college, and it lead to some very dumb stuff. I hope Willis uses this as a learning experience and understands you can't get away with stuff like this. Especially as a basketball player at UK. If all this is true, it's pretty embarrassing for himself and the university. I don't recall any of instances of hearing about Willis doing dumb stuff, so hopefully it's a one off type of thing and serves as a wake up call.

Will be interested to see how Cal deals with this.

You drinking didnt matter ..you're a nobody..Willis is held to a higher standard ..We dont need boneheads getting drunk in public....You think the NBA is not watching

Not disagreeing with any of that, like I said it's embarrassing to himself and the university. Hopefully it's a lesson learned for Willis.

Would be worse if he was caught in Lexington during the semester IMO

Has the rest of the summer to make this right by coaches , family , and himself.

If you are in the driver seat and the keys are in the ignition then yes. You are under control of the vehicle at that point no matter if you intend to drive or not. If you have the keys, even in your pocket, you could be considered in physical control of the vehicle so you could get a DUI. Since Willis was outside the vehicle, even with the door open, it's PI. In this case, Willis was found to not be in control so that's why he was booked for PI not DUI. Most of the time PIs are BS but it doesn't sound like it in this case. Sounds like Willis might of intended to drive, or was driving and got out the car and passed out which of course is terrible in either case but lucky for him he passed out outside the car.

Learn and move on is all you can do at this point. I'm sure many of us, me included have driven buzzed or drunk. I've never had a DUI but easily could of had one if I had gotten busted. I remember driving home one time when I shouldn't have and was really lucky to make it home safely. I said I wouldn't do it again and I haven't since. This will hopefully be the wake up call for Willis that he needs to control the situation or make other arrangements if you are going drinking.

I was the DDD many a time in the summers while at UK; but I wasn't on the basketball team.
and was never so drunk as to pass out by the car...very poor planning/judgment on his part

Been in similar situations as Derek many times. If he knew that he was in Northern Kentucky, he wasn't that drunk.

Could he have a medical condition whose symptoms mimic intoxication?
