Do you not find it odd that all those West Coast schools would discriminate based on race? California has a large Asian population and isn't known to be a bastion of discrimination, so there could have been other reasons. DEI policies would give him a better chance, not worse.

Already done. SCOTUS has ruled that it’s illegal to consider race in admissions, correctly so.

Feels a little bit like he was trying to create this situation to effect change. Maybe a little similar to the Shannon Faulkner/Citadel issue?

Also, wild that someone with those scores and metrics wouldn't be admitted and that's definitely an issue.

I will say, in a previous life (10 years ago)I worked for a contractor at Furman University and they made some major changes to their admissions process to bring in more metrics other than GPA and Test scores, and to make sure that they were including a more broad picture of the student such as Community activities, clubs,sports etc. I also suspected a lot of the reason was also who could actually afford Furman tuition.


I will say this, I do understand the goal of a University create a more diverse Student Population.

College was a time for many of us where we were able to meet people from different backgrounds, different religious backgrounds, socio economic, etc.

Much of my world view was changed by those interactions.

I don't want to create an inequity, but I don't think the intention was nefarious based on conversations and discussion I was privy too, with high level University officials at a pretty Liberal University.

The parents have a massively inflated sense of how good a student their little Johnny is.

Also very common lol. I worked at Furman and immediately changed my profession after dealing with those really coddled kids and their Snowplow parents.

For sure. I am 100% of the belief that Asian students have been unfairly discriminated against. At the end of the day these are educational institutions. You can’t take one race’s academic qualification as some kind of gimme, which I think is in effect what’s been the case. To speak in huge generality, the Asian kid has perfect SAT and it’s not enough; the black kid does and he’s a shoo-in.

On the other hand, I think colleges have a legitimate interest in considering student personality, so to speak. Now if you can show that Asian students were still perceived negatively in that regard with equal qualifications, I’d be more inclined to buy the parents’ arguments.

The question I would pose to a hardcore Asian parent is, if your position is that Asian students are disproportionately qualified academically, are you willing to consider the possibility that they are disproportionately underqualified in other ways?

I think its one of those things that the road of good intentions is paved with the bricks of hell type of deals.

No doubt in my mind that MOST people have good intentions, they wanted to right a past wrong. However, we have way overshot the runway. And when we overshot the runway the psychology of crowds took over.

Not that specific one. It's a topic that honestly doesn't impact me at all so it's not really high on my radar.

I will absolutely admit when I'm not an expert lol. I do have some pretty good understanding of the thought processes at Colleges and Universities as it pertains to enrollment and admissions since the business I was in depended on enrollment for our financial success.

The lawsuit that Scotch referenced was the one i was referring to. The decision has been out for a while. I just find it interesting that it never made it across one of your social media feeds.

I am not very active on social media, particularly with politics as so much of it is either outright disinformation or so completely slanted that it may as well be. I prefer to read articles and research topics which I am passionate about, such as Public Education.

I would hesitate about using this case to make a blanket judgement about Whites being broadly discriminated against in America. I am a White,Straight,Christian, Male. Life hadn't exactly been tough for me, I certainly haven't experienced as many doors closed to me as many other groups.

But I actually think the correction has overshot the runway in the other direction now has been my general point when discussing DEI. Meaning, I agree that there this was discrimination and that programs that have quotas, etc, should be illegal. But that in an effort to remove all of those programs, there are things that are doing the opposite that are being caught up in it. For example, blind resume reviews that remove certain identifying language in the initial screening process. Would protect a straight white male when applying for places if there was a liberal HR member screening resumes. But because its under the DEI umbrella, it is being thrown out as well.

The only way fair way forward is a colorblind society. Once you start having carve outs for special groups or skin colors then people start to abuse them.
