This defense looks like pure ****. Soft in the middle and receivers open everywhere. If this is going to be the norm, we'll be lucky to win 6 games.

more than State. And it's not because our offense is having a quick scoring drives. Offense hasn't helped the defense at all tonight.

I actually agree with this. The secondary was horrible. But hopefully Calhoun coming back will help. But I thought the defensive line and linebackers played great minus a couple missed tackles.

The whole second half we basically played a base defense. Anytime we threw anything exotic at them they didn't know what to do.

It was more of the special teams play than offense that was more concerning for me. We kept our defense on the field a long time. However, our defense looked weak even on the early drives in which we were "fresh". I don't remember seeing the gashing offensive plays or softer coverage last year. Defense is a concern for me after game 1.

I'm gonna cut the D some slack because they could of cracked and lost the game.

They took Southerns best shot at home with little support from our O and special teams. They get
some credit for survival under difficult circumstances.

slightly different take...thought the lbs played poorly most of the night. dl was good, but got tired considering they played the majority of the first half. the lb's seem to be a problem in passing situations, an well, in certain running situations as well. safety saved our *** several times tonight. gonna have to watch this one again, but we have some strides to make on that side of the ball.

Defense vs. USM...

Aside from some coverage issues which I will assume Diaz will fix (hopefully) I gotta give the D some slack. An on side kick in the first half, an on side kick in the 2nd half, a double pass in the first half, and another double pass in the 2nd half, a goal line stand, a kick off returned for a TD---jeez, that is a LOT of stuff to deal with in a 1st game.

So I give em a pass tonight, but they better have their **** right next Saturday!

first series would have been a 3 and out if Jefferson doesn't jump off sides. next two drives by southern went for -3 yards. The touchdown drive Southern had, our defense was on the field for almost 10 straight minutes. Our defense was on the field for 14 mins in first qtr. Cleveland concerns me on defense. He got toasted tonight. Safeties concern me too, but they did before the season started. The middle was open most of the night. I'm just hoping Southern running 4 and 5 wide was the reason we were out of position and our secondary wasn't as bad as it looked tonight.

Well, 2 defensive off-sides in the first quarter are fundamental defensive issues to me. As you mentioned, one of the off-sides extended the drive.

Maybe "fresh" wasn't the word to use as our special teams didn't help the defense out much in the first quarter.

I just don't remember the soft coverage from the defense last year. There were 8 passes in the first half from USM that went for 10+yards. Maybe it is due to the fact of missing secondary personnel. Maybe it is due to the scheme or missed tackles. We better have it figured out for LSU next weekend.

Take away a 45 yard run in the 3rd qt and it will show we pretty much handled USM's run game. Some coverages need to be worked out.Plus, getting Jackson and Evans off the field would help. Both were horrid tonight!

The game went about how I expected.

lets not forget that they were given two extremely generous first down spots, one of which was on a 4th down.

You mean safety- from what I saw we only played one for most of the night. We were almost in a 4-4 with Cleveland or whomever up.

Eta: Jackson I guess?

That had everything to do with camera angles and poor graphics on the coverage. Fox's first down marker was anywhere from a half yard to a full yard forward from the marker all game.

they noted the graphics issue in the broadcast and i was a yard behind, but im not talking about giving first downs, im talking about the actual spot of the ball. they were giving half yards on one that would have gone done as a 4th and 1 and another that would have given us the ball on what very much looked like a failed attempt at a 4th down. if brando says it was a generous spot, it must be outrageously generous.

in fact, take out that run and USM gained 1.2 yds/carry.

I was curious why it seemed that our d-line was almost offsides all night long. Then I happened to pay attention to the USM center as he addressed the ball and I understood. He was moving the ball forward at least a foot every time he got in his stance. So that may explain some of the off-sides issues.

I didn't notice that, but that would explain it. Just a play or two after we were called for offsides early in the game, both teams lined up right in front of me, and most of State's defensive linemen were lined up past the ball on USM's side.
