This defense looks like pure ****. Soft in the middle and receivers open everywhere. If this is going to be the norm, we'll be lucky to win 6 games.

more than State. And it's not because our offense is having a quick scoring drives. Offense hasn't helped the defense at all tonight.
It was more of the special teams play than offense that was more concerning for me. We kept our defense on the field a long time. However, our defense looked weak even on the early drives in which we were "fresh". I don't remember seeing the gashing offensive plays or softer coverage last year. Defense is a concern for me after game 1.
first series would have been a 3 and out if Jefferson doesn't jump off sides. next two drives by southern went for -3 yards. The touchdown drive Southern had, our defense was on the field for almost 10 straight minutes. Our defense was on the field for 14 mins in first qtr. Cleveland concerns me on defense. He got toasted tonight. Safeties concern me too, but they did before the season started. The middle was open most of the night. I'm just hoping Southern running 4 and 5 wide was the reason we were out of position and our secondary wasn't as bad as it looked tonight.

Take away a 45 yard run in the 3rd qt and it will show we pretty much handled USM's run game. Some coverages need to be worked out.Plus, getting Jackson and Evans off the field would help. Both were horrid tonight!
The game went about how I expected.
Well, 2 defensive off-sides in the first quarter are fundamental defensive issues to me. As you mentioned, one of the off-sides extended the drive.
I was curious why it seemed that our d-line was almost offsides all night long. Then I happened to pay attention to the USM center as he addressed the ball and I understood. He was moving the ball forward at least a foot every time he got in his stance. So that may explain some of the off-sides issues.
