Just seems like an unnecessary battle to fight. Such a small part of Mississippi's issues. We are fighting over our spending, we need to figuring out our INCOME problem, or at least some other areas of bigger spending.

There is real money wasted in education. Again, each superintendent you elminate is on the order of $3 to $4M worth of money. THat's not insignificant to most of the small counties in Mississippi, especially when you are talking about giving up essentially nothing to get it.

Bolivar County has six districts.. There are actually 141 school districts with 141 Superintendents that are members of the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents. But I think there are 10 or so districts with superintendents that are not members.

This is absolutely absurd. There's no justification for it, except welcome to Mississippi.

I don't agree with that 3 million figure obviously (I know you explained it in the other post). That's a little ridiculous, plus there's no guarantee what you spend it on is going to be a net positive. And....you take away a solid job from the community, one that lives/pays taxes/etc. Using the rest of his known life as justification that somehow you could make a lump sum payment of 3 million dollars is kind crazy. Am I seeing this wrong?

And who's to say those jobs are not needed and "duplicated"?

Biggest issue is not having access to higher math, writing, and sciences in the smaller schools and forcing kids to do 13 years when some would be better off in trade schools or higher learning earlier.

We as a state and country waste tons of money educating to the lowest common denominator. Need more individual testing g and placement for all the kids.

How do I get on the birthday shout out list?

What an absolute monumental waste of time that was. That idiot spent 15 - 20 mins just reading birthday wishes with an occasional anniversary wish thrown in. I'm watching so I can be informed as to what is going on and this jackass comes up with this?

But do schools exist to be employment agencies?

I'll give a little when it comes to some very small districts that are just awful, they can certainly benefit from being absorbed into another, better district.

That seems to be how you look at it, not providing the best education for the students to ensure they are ready for the next step of life.

As I and other posters mentioned, we need more teachers and access to AP and high level classes that smaller schools can’t offer because they do not have mass of students and/or a qualified teacher.

And don’t get me started on the preservation of small schools for the reason of athletics.

You can absolutely convert that annual expense into an upfront payment today, although not really for the life of the expense. I don't know what these communities are able to borrow at, but say they can issue a 10 year bond for 3% (which would be more than a 2 percentage point premium over 10 year treasuries, so I'm guessing that's in the range of reasonableness for most municipalities or counties that aren't facing imminent solvency issues). They could get ~$1.14M less underwriting costs right now for $132k annual payments over the next ten years.

The $3-4M is what they'd have to have currently to fund that $132k indefinitely.

We all agree with this (unless you are a globalist liberal). If consolidation achieves this, I could get on board. But unfortunately, to-date, all consolidation is basically pushed only to save money, and results are bigger classrooms and less teachers.

You said contracts weren’t addressed. I assumed you meant teachers haven’t been issued contracts for next year. Are you meaning whether or not they will continue to get paid the remainder of the year? If so, that’s even worse. MDE assured us within the first week that we would be getting paid for the remainder of the year regardless of shay happens.

Contracts were set for 19/20 already and to ask teachers to extend the year will cost $. This current year's contract time could be used to plan for how to catch everyone up next year but instead its being used to plan for this year. Once May comes and the Gov has to finally make a 17ing decision, she will either cancel school, which means the time between now and then will have been lost for planning how to catch everyone up next year, or it means school is back in session and therefore teachers will have to work beyond their currently contracted amount of days. This extension of work hasn't been accounted for by her administration. They have basically told school boards to figure it out(I have seen this, I'm not joking, its the actual just of what they have said so far).
Effectively, the Gov is tying up valuable resources and time right now and has passed the buck(literally) to school boards(districts) when it comes to how to potentially pay for teachers having to work past their contracted work days.
