Wait I thought all of the pre Egg Bowl distractions left with Mullen.

The tweet said he will be a candidate for the UMass job. Now, it doesn’t say whether he is interested or not, whether he has applied for the job or not or even if there is a single sliver of truth to it. Besides, it’s a “tweet”, and I believe that people can (and many do) tweet whatever they want and not cite official sources even if they have them. There are probably reasons why he could be speculated to be a candidate-actually there are. A quick glance at his history as far as coaching stops reveals that he has spent a significant portion of his coaching career at East Coast schools. He was the DB coach at UMass as recently as 2006, when he spent a year at that job. That is very possibly why he is being “considered”. He’s definitely spent most of his career coaching in that area of the country-he has only been in the south since going to Vanderbilt in 2011. He’s a Pennsylvania boy, what I would refer to as a “Yankee”. It’s just natural that people could make assumptions about him going back up north. He may not even be interested in the job, and the person who tweeted that probably doesn’t have a clue. He is making pretty good money right now, an amount that is a great deal more than what UMass typically pays their head coaches. As another poster said, it isn’t always about money, and it is not. Young people tend to think that it’s all about money, but at his age and experience level Shoop probably has concerns about things other than money. If he is interested in being a head coach bad enough he will become a head coach regardless of what we offer him to stay. I get that, as a lot of us do. A man is going to do what he wants to do, period. Nothing we can do about it if he really wants to be a head coach again.

If he leaves, Moorhead will replace him. There are plenty of good coaches who would love to have his job. You have to admit that it’s pretty amusing to see how many people are upset about the possibility of losing Bob Shoop after all the negative remarks on these message boards about him when he was hired. I remember people saying he was a bum and a second-rate coach. Someone here referred to him as a “Tennessee reject”, even. You would have thought our hiring Shoop was the worst coaching hire in our school’s history. Seriously, I can’t remember so many negative remarks about any coaching hire Mississippi State has ever made. I remember thinking that the man must have really pissed off an awful lot of people along the way. Now I realize that those comments were just the product of fans who had heard each other saying **** about the guy and taking it all as fact. I hope he stays. He’s done a good job. Yeah, I know. He’s got a great group of players this year. You still have to put those players in the right place and coach them to know what to do when the ball is snapped. He’s done that for sure.

UMASS should hold out for a couple more years and they’ll be able to pick up Dan Mullen at a discount. Low pressure and the chance to go back home after Florida gets done with him.

It's a chance for something greater down the road but I don't want more responsibility for less pay. Just depends on what he hopes transpires from it. I would not personally view more responsibility and 1/2 the pay as a step up.

Or its more likely a career killer if he wants to be a HC of a bigger program down the line. Our defense has just now rehabbed Shoop from his terrible performance as the UT DC so its obvious Shoop is no miracle worker which he will need to be to be successful at UMass.
