They cut down the Italian nights menu maybe a year ago. When they did that I said it was a bad decision. Still hate to see it go though.

Ol Ty is having a bad run of luck.

How long does it go before you can’t attribute it to bad luck anymore?

Damn. That was my favorite place to eat in Starkville. When I lived in Starkville, we would eat there once a week. Dinner nights and BYOB was fantastic.

He put some of the blame on the construction around the building but I call BS on that. $10 for a 17'n bagel sandwich is what did it

It was the breakfast place in town. Starkville could really use Another Broken Egg or something similar.

We do have plenty of brunch places, but yes...strictly breakfast is narrow. Only Starkville Cafe, Waffle House, and the Breakfast Club off the top of my head.

What Starkville needs is for Anthony’s to move from West Point to starkville. I’ve yet to find a really good steak in Starkville. Someone make it happen.

I still can’t believe Doe’s didn’t make it.

I've never been impressed by the Does in Greenville. I realize the dump of a building is part of the charm, but 85 degrees inside in the summer and an entirely average and very overpriced steak is not my cup of tea.

We used to play wiffle ball and football on the lot City Bagel was built on.... Farmhouse was on one side and George Sherman’s House was on the other side.

I ate there twice while I town for the regional. Lunch for two ended up being $28.00. My usual breakfast bagel on my way out of town was good but not like it used to be. They changed up the way they made some things. I noticed it and so did my wife. They really did and I’m not just making stuff up because it changed owners. I never understand why someone takes something that’s worked for years and changes it.

Sonofabitch, when Christy's was demolished, giant underground vats of grease were ruptured and flowed into City Bagel causing permanent damage to overpriced bagel dough starter.

It's tough for a lot Starkville restaurants to make it year round. Plus, I'd bet there's a large contingent of the local pop that rarely dine at more than 3 or 4 places in the entire county.

I almost commented a while back, but feared getting called out for blasphemy...

I ate at City Bagel recently for the first time in about 10 years. I am not sure if it was that I have eaten much higher quality and it's the same as it was before, or if the quality went downhill, but it was not good. The bacon was a thin salty jerky, the eggs were rubbery, and the bagel itself was close to the consistency of the "bread" in MRE's.

Either way, I am kinda thankful Flo and Eddie's is gone, because I might need therapy if I tried their cheese sticks and experienced the same level of disappointment. **

Joe and Mary were really cool people. A handful of friends worked there in the early 2000s and Joe and Mary were really open and welcoming to everyone I saw. They would invite you into their home for some wine and food, meet their kids, and just learn about others. Really neat experience for some college kids.
I think its been 10 years since their daughter died- she would be 28 or 29 now.

I know they no longer own the Bagel, but they made the Bagel what it was for many.

The article in the SDN blamed business being bad for the last year during construction next door. Well, isn't that Ty's development that is under construction? So in essence he's blaming himself which is ultimately the truth.

It's just an excuse, the parking isn't any worse there than it is when you go to 2 Brothers, Commodore Bobs, The Bin, etc. To me the bagels have NEVER been as good as I can get in other places, Beagle Bagel in Jackson area are way better. I did really like Italian night when they started, they put out some really good food and being able to BYOB made the wife very very happy.

The straw that broke the camels back for me is the manger that was there when they started new ownership and from what I hear was still there recently. He was usually operating the cash register and was just terrible w/ people. He had no expression on his face, was not friendly at all, just a real jerk. I went in one Saturday a.m. and there was a line of about 4 in front of me. I got to the register and placed my to go order for 2 bagels and cream cheese, paid, and one of the guys in the back walked up and hollered at everybody in there that it would be about a 35 minute wait for orders. I looked at Mr Personality and asked "35 minutes for 2 bagels there in the display to go? He said "that's what the man said". The bagels I had ordered were laying there in the case ready to go! I told him to give me my money back and I left, haven't been back since and that was about a year and a half ago. Good Riddance Mr Personality........

Nope, Anthony's, Hucks in Columbus, The Veranda, and Tyler. In that order. The Ribeye with crawfish sauce at Anthony's is top five in my life long search for the perfect piece of beef.

I tried Breakfast Club a few weeks ago for breakfast because the line @ The Cafe was ridiculous. I had their breakfast wrap, food wasn't bad at all but the service was not up to par. It was service by committee and not sure any of the 3 servers that came at different times were aware that the other ones were working our table too, just seemed real disorganized. Even with all that attention it took a long time for the food to get there. I'd probably go again but only if I couldn't get in The Cafe.

I agree that their bagels and food for that matter were pretty average but they did have a pretty good atmosphere. Hate to see it go, really great place to hang out with a cup of coffee. Maybe they will find a way to reopen it as a BBQ or Mexican restaurant, we can't seem to satisfy the demand for those fares.

Great post all facts. The park/garden across from the Highway Patrol station was named after their daughter as tribute. Joe was also a legitimate chef who cultivated some food concepts Starkville never had like real NY-style bagels (boiled, cooked on wood planks) and real Italian food with everything homemade. And you cannot forget about Paul, Joe’s brother. He opened the place at 5am everyday and made all the bagel doughs by hand. Mary may be the hardest working woman I’ve ever met. They didn’t just create that business, they were that business. Great people.

I hate to do this but I’m about to give a critical opinion of what went wrong from the outside looking in. It was still ran well. The manager Paul was a good dude whose been around the Starkville food scene for a long time. But that hotshot chef they brought in... He changed too much and didn’t know his demo. Got way too artistic and didn’t just pump out good food. You can’t have ego in this business. I saw some of the dishes he promoted on social media and just cringed. Joe pumped out simple, quality Italian food people loved. New dude made plates you didn’t know whether to 17 it or eat it. The moment I knew he just didn’t even remotely get it when was he was pimping Spanish mackerel specials. I’ve been in the food business for 20 years and fished saltwater longer than that. Spanish mackerel is culinary garbage. No one with a clue serves that trash. He saw Joe’s simple menu and decided he needed to bless Starkville peasants with his culinary talent. See how that turned out... He was more in to his ego than giving the people what they want.

So, you’re suggesting that it took twenty years for the summer slump to catch up with City Bagel? Local population is what kept City Bagel in business for two decades. The management/ownership change killed City Bagel.

Not sure if it’s a secret menu item but my roommate told me to order the Philly Filet at Anthony’s one night and Jesus Christ it was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my existence

Best steak in town is at Commadore Bob's. Better than Anthony's heavily marinated, but tasty, steaks.

Agree to disagree on the steaks. but Hucks? Come on. Brussards across the street does better steaks than Hucks.

I mean if you want a heavy marinade and a soup dish for your steak when it comes out cause they just pour some juice on it... then anthony's is your place. Or Ole Hickory.
