I thought about Matt Canada but I'd worry about possible personality clashes there as he's had issues in the past with other HCs.

One this is certain we need to spend whatever necessary for the best OC possible. If not we are DOA. This is undoubtedly the most important staff hire and will set the tone for the Schiano tenure.

Also I do not want to see a staff full of former Schiano staff retreads. There are some good names out there that people mentioned. Outside of OC we needs recruiters.

Money is obviously important but many schools spend big bucks on staff and coordinators but that doesn't mean they're getting that return. You still have to identify the right people just like with HC for an AD.

It took Orgeron 3 tries to land on Brady even though at the outset he said he was going to hire the best guy he could find and whatever it costs....Canada didn't work, Ensminger alone didn't work and then some young unknown at a much lower cost is the guy who made it all click...using Leach tree philosophy might I add even though not a Leach guy lol.

Miles has already gone through 3 OCs in his short time at KU.

So got to still identify the right people money or not.

I realize that but my point was Schiano may need to hire outside his circle and money cannot be a restraint within reason of course.

Also need to balance out the recruiting angle and the coaching angle. It's great to have all amazing recruiters. But not every coach has to have those abilities to the detriment of scheme. In this case I'd prefer a strong OC with a good scheme and known as a good offensive mind. And have the position coaches be top recruiters.

Agree...just look at lowest paid HC in the B10 Tom Allen at IU. This past season went out and hired Kalen DeBoer from Fresno State via Sioux Falls at 800K and he's done a nice job his first year as IU OC and IU has 8 wins. First time they've won 8 since 1993 and first time with a winning conference record since 1993. It can be done!

NC on the staff sure with whatever kind of title co-OC or what not but as sole play caller I'm apprehensive about that I'd rather him learn and work along side a more seasoned name.
Exactly. I like him as a coach and motivator, but he has not shown anything that would make me think that he is ready. We need a test vet.

What about bringing Kyle Flood back as OL coach?

and co-head academic support adviser?
Flood had a winning record in the B1G defeating Michigan and almost PSU.He will stay at Alabama and watch Saban compete for national championships.

RB coach ray Rice
DC Randy Shannon
Qb coach mike teel

need more than jersey guys on staff. Shannon can pull Florida, rice ny, BL upstat ny

I would like to see a former player or two on staff

I also think we need to recruit Florida hard plus from DC north through New York and west to Harrisburg

I also would like to see if we can pull recruits from urban areas like Chicago and Houston

But to start we have to pull in some transfers

Hafley wouldnt come as a head coach. Foolish to think he would come as a coordinator.
Brown at DC would be interesting. I’d take an OC from a non P5 school if he had good recruiting connections.
He would have walked here for a head coach offer and he's not getting any P5 head coach offers. We never wanted him as head coach. Recruiters like him grow on trees. Greg Mattison is calling the defense for OSU anyway!

Andrew Aurich from Princeton will be considered for OC. Great schemes.

Fran Brown was already reached out to for the DC gig. Fantastic recruiter.
Don't know much about Aurich...no chance at the HC Surace himself I guess even if the budget is as big as projected. Aurich just got promoted right? His first year as OC at Princeton. How did they do offensively anywhere to see production and rankings this year? On first blush seems a little light on the resume but I don't really know for sure.

Here's another name the WF OC Warren Ruggiero. Been an OC under Clawson since Bowling Green, has been an assistant coach at W&M/Hofstra, went to school at Delaware.

This year total/scoring offense was 13/42, last year 28/34, 2 years ago 17/21. Not looking beyond the last 3 years but just based on that seems like a solid name. I think he calls the plays not Clawson.

Some stats for the former Princeton OC at Ok. State

17 in total offense, 35 scoring offense, Chubba Hubbard leading rusher in the country hailing from Canada

IMO staff and coordinators, specifically the OC in our case, are going to be crucial to success. We've gone through this a little but not really much of a hint on who the OC might be and just a slight hint on the DC side.

DCs

I think someone said Fran Brown was reached out to by GS.

If he's not possible the Cincy DC Marcus Freeman is also a nice up and coming now I like and GS being in Ohio might not make that too much of a reach for coming into contact with him over the years. If Fickell gets a bigger job though he might go along but if not maybe obtainable.

OCs

Kevin Wilson ....if he's a possible 3rd wheel behind play caller Day and PGC Yurcich

Sean Gleeson at Ok State

Kevin Johns Memphis OC...worked with Wilson at IU, Kingsbury at TT and now Norvell at Memphis

Rhett Lashlee SMU OC....worked under Malzahn and now Dykes did a quick stint up at UConn to get out from under Malzahn and make a name for himself might want to do the same after Dykes

Graham Harrell if Helton is let go

Bill Bedenbaugh OU OL coach

Brian Wright Toledo

Will Hall Tulane

EDIT: Mentioned them later in the thread.

Phil Longo NJ guy UNC OC Leach disciple but never coached with him..don't know his UNC salary

Warren Ruggiero WF OC went to school in Delaware, coached at Hofstra/W&M and some solid offensive numbers the last 3 years didn't look back further than that...been OC for Clawson dating back to Bowling Green
How about someone who put up 51 points against Schiano's Ohio St. defense in 2018. Do you think Greg would hire the guy who could do that?

I am OK with Schiano guys who have been here before, as long as they left on their own to further their careers. We need to steer clear of guys who were fired: McNulty, Flood, etc...

We know Greg can coach D, spend money to get O.

That article has been posted here in the past but it's one of those fluff kind of pieces to help rehab an image....regardless of that it's still mentioned there too. Did you read it. He also had similar issues at Wisconsin or NC State can't remember which.

From the article:

So maybe the question is not where is Matt Canada, but why is Matt Canada unemployed? “‘He’s tough to work with’ is the perception,” says Booger McFarland, the former NFL and LSU defensive lineman who’s the color analyst on Monday Night Football broadcasts and has deep ties in the college game. “It’s been a stigma that’s followed him. People talk in the business. I’m just assuming that’s why he doesn’t have a job.”

Because of the agreement, Canada is limited in discussing his time at LSU. He side steps or declines to answer questions about he and LSU coach Ed Orgeron, an infamous icy relationship rooted in Orgeron’s mid-season intervening in the offense. LSU officials are also bound to silence because of the non-disclosure. “I respected Coach O’s decision to handle it like he did,” Canada says. “He didn’t feel that it was best for his program for me to be the playcaller. I learned a tremendous amount from Coach O.”

Darrell Wilson should be a candidate for DC. He has over 15 years of experience in the Big Ten between LB's, DB's and Special Teams. He has the strong NJ ties that we need as a great recruiter and the former head coach of Woodrow Wilson down in South Jersey. He is well respected throughout the area by many coaches.

Didn't realize Aurich had worked with GS here and with the Bucs so I guess that would make him realistic.

From a SL article:

Three early names to bounce around: Former Maryland interim coach Matt Canada, who took this season off and had a close relationship with Sitkowski while he was recruiting him, Princeton’s Andrew Aurich, who worked with Schiano during his first Rutgers stint and with the Bucs and Oklahoma State’s Sean Gleeson, a New Jersey native who previously ran high-flying attacks at Princeton.

A couple links on Gleeson's and Princeton's offense.

we need a mix of veterans and young up and comers. Would love Wilson as OC, Nunzio as QB, Bostad as OL, Brown as DC, Demo as secondary coach. The rest are young recruiting studs.

There's a NJ guy on Leach's staff...not a name I'd want yet but maybe in a few years should we be looking again I think might be good. Eric Mele went to William Paterson, coached at St Peters and Marist. Been on Leach's staff or 5 years...3 as STs coach and the last 2 as RB coach. Leach position coaches often go on to be solid productive OCs. Seth Littrell and Briles were RB coaches for Leach at TT.

Could/would Hafley or Nunzio be able to handle specials? I assume so and it’s a good position for either one of them. They could easily transition to DC/OC in a few years when they are ready

Current staff that I wouldn't mind getting a chance on staff would be Jay Valai and Kolby Smith. Didn't know Ross Douglas and Myles Nash on staff along with Will Gilkison, one of early year Schiano players at LB.

I've mentioned this guy for Butch Jones since he worked with Jones at CMU/Cincy and the first couple years at Tenn but since Addazio was let go Mike Bajakian BC's OC would also be available. He's a NJ native who has been a GA at RU in the late 90s too. He's always worked at TB as qb coach but not during GS' tenure there.

I have a connection to a person who would be a position coach for this dc. I am an off site defensive analyists for that person and potentially would be offered a defensive analyists position depending on how hires go. But that would be a big career change.
Good luck. Hope you get it

You believe Hafley would leave a co-DC position at the #1 team in the country to be a special teams coach here? Im not sure he leaves to come here as DC

Not sure if you can get by the background history of Rich Rod but he's available now with Luke's firing.

Also a little more on the Jersey guys Longo and Gleeson....posted some of it in another thread. For those who stress NJ ties...I think 2 solid options if they can be had. I don't know Longo's salary at UNC. Gleeson is at 550K at Ok. State.

On Longo's offense

https://www.tarheelblog.com/2018/12...raid-phil-longo-ole-miss-run-game-competition

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/o...-describes-his-variation-of-air-raid-offense/

On Gleeson.....didn't realize he interviewed for a spot on KK's staff at Arizona...you know I like me some Leach tree and KK must be recognizing some potential in him..Gundy flew him in from Arizona to KC where he had been recruiting to interview him and hired him on the spot.

From an article in the Athletic:

Whereas he fully admits to having never heard of Yurcich prior to his own Internet search, Gleeson, 34, had already developed a reputation in the coaching community. Princeton’s innovative offense averaged an FCS-high 47.0 points per game en route to a 10-0 season last year. At the time Gundy first contacted him, he said, Gleeson was meeting with newly hired Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

“Sean wasn’t as big a secret as what people thought,” Gundy said. “I have access to everything on (video) now. I can go on there, pull every game up from Princeton.”

What Gundy saw was an offense that played at a high tempo, was explosive in both the run and the pass games and always seemed a step ahead of opposing defenses. Most importantly to Gundy, Gleeson, who is also the Cowboys’ QBs coach, helped put two Princeton quarterbacks into the NFL. Chad Kanoff (Cardinals) and John Lovett (now a tight end for the Chiefs) both won the Bushnell Cup given to the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year.

“I’m into more of a young youthful guy that can develop quarterbacks and be very engaging during recruiting,” Gundy said. “If we have a good quarterback, if we recruit good quarterbacks, we win games. If we don’t, we’re average.

Some other articles....like the comments in the 2nd article about Princeton having 2 different kind of qbs in successive years and Gleeson adapting the offense to each to highlight their strengths.
