I hate to be a wet blanket but if this is true I can guarantee we will not win a national championship in the next 5 years let alone 2 or 3

- take it to the bank

[THIS IS APPARENTLY VERY POOR SARCASM - no idiot would actually think this - but apparently some believe such idiots exist - thus the required disclaimer]

Yeah neither are at minimum 60 of the 65 power 5 teams lol. Probably more like 62/63 of the power 5 teams.

if BOB stays involved with the offense -- could easily see MJ being promoted to OC with it being the next step in taking over a program

Lol. That’s not happening no matter who we hire. We need to get back to being eligible…and that might take 2-3 years

Bill Obrien made Penn state competitive in the wake of Sandusky. He’s a good coach. NFL coaching records don’t mean squat for college coaches. Saban failed in the nfl. It’s not the same job.

The fact that most HCs in college are also somewhat the GM, I'm not excited. He ruined the Texans in that double role of HC and GM. Yuck...Might as well have kept Frost.

Maybe I'm being overly concerned here. I'd give him a chance, but I wouldn't be excited about it. Not sure if I'd even be able to give him the mulligan first season failure that's likely to happen with any candidate. Others, I could be patient with the right kind of growth.

Here's to hoping you're wrong mavsker...

On the other hand, the rumor might have legs. Jeremy Pernell had that long, detailed article where he was making this huge case for hiring O’Brien. Maybe something was leaked to him with the strong suggestion he write something super positive in order to soften opposition in the fan base and to prepare the soil. I remember thinking how out of the blue the article seemed.

Interesting I have only heard one name that has come up from two different people and that was Chris Peterson.

But there is a chance those guys were wrong too.

But Peterson fits the TA hiring model to a T.

If he does become our coach, I feel sorry for him ahead of time. He will be mercilessly lambasted by our fan base for any loss he incurs...

Bret Bielema’s recent success actually casts Bill O’Brien in a more favorable light. He is a former Big 10 coach of the year, winning under awful circumstances at Penn State. He had an up and down NFL career but fielded some really good teams, including an 11 win team. He has experience under Saban now, which seems to pay off for a lot of guys.

I could go as far as saying I would be excited for this.

2 days ago I'd say yuck, but after hearing a bit of why he left PSU etc, I think I'd be ok with the hire.

That was the rumor last year before Frost was retained inexplicably. I can sell myself on BOB. He's spent a couple years around the best coach in the game, hopefully that can add to his running a program.

Really? I thought our fan base was remarkably patient with Teflon Scotty - until he finally ran out of assistant coaches to throw under the bus for his own failures.

Not my first choice but he is a total coaching professional.
He basically has no ties to another school
He would hire total pros to fill out his staff

I am trying to think what current college HC he seems like...But I am drawing blanks. Maybe a more polished Bo? Relax...Bo can't hurt you anymore.

Not convinced Bill O'Brien would even take this job if offered.....and I call B.S. on your buddy.
I'm not sure the NFL wont come knocking at BOB door. He had some decent success with the Texans until he took on the GM role as well. Some NFL teams may want to talk to him.

I know a bunch of former Texans players. They've all said he is a pretty good coach, but tends to choke under pressure. Deviates from everything he has done that made him successful when the chips are on the table. I think he could be a good head guy, I'm more worried about his recruiting and staff.

Yeah, I actually view his NFL records favorably overall.

He did far better in the NFL than Nick Saban did.

If he can recruit here as he did with the scholly reductions at PSU, that would be great. You can't look at his overall class ranking, he was hampered by the number he could bring in. Had the administration backed him as they promised, he would be playing for championships.

if Trev has made the decision - he has to hope MJ doesn't go 3-2 or god forbid 4-1 down the stretch or he has a major PR disaster on his hands

Doubtful that would be any time soon. Houston still hasn't recovered from his tenure there.

I don't agree. Sure he screwed up with GM duties. But was pretty successful before taking that on. Mean while DW did as much harm to the Texans as O'Brien.

Generally speaking, I care more about a higher floor than a higher ceiling with this HC hire. I think BOB provides a higher floor than many of the names mentioned, so that part is good.

But I’m not going to get excited or argue for any particular candidate. Wake me up when the announcement is made so that I can start rationalizing the decision.
