Well I was talking about literal population numbers for each small town/city in the late 70s through early 2000s.... and there is nothing made up about it.Now you guys are making stuff up.
Please provide any evidence of what you are stating as truth. There is none.
We are classified based on ADM like everyone else.
We have hated our last two conferences. They are weak. We don’t like it.
It was the Rutherford County schools that asked not to play Cleveland County.
We would love a more challenging conference, as we had until recent years.
But the Association is not going to let us make that choice.
Reidsville, with slightly more than Shelby, was 3A through the initial changes last time, and then got bumped into 4A at the end. We felt that was to avoid Shelby, but we have no proof.
City of Shelby has students that go to all four high schools, for various reasons. The school lines don’t match up with city limits.
Teachers kids often go where the parent teaches, etc.
There has been no efforts to keep Shelby High small. It just worked out that way.
We would prefer to play in higher classifications. But that still would not provide us with more players to choose from. That’s the ADM, whether any of us like it or not.
We have played much bigger schools for decades. Charlotte schools. Freedom was the largest in the state at one time. Recent state champ Watauga had a series with us.
As far as Gaffney, we played and defeated them in a year they one the SC State Title in the highest classification. And we had a mostly competitive 4 game series with them in the 90s.
Shelby has absolutely nothing to prove in taking on competition.
What any fair minded football fan should see is Shelby’s unmatched success in NC high school football, regardless of ADM or classification. Lots of work by lots of people.
Time to quote Vince Lombardi again.
You remember him, correct?
Super Bowl trophy.
“ The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have. “
Shelby High Football has done more with its program than any other in NC.

Surely you jest. Coach Sosebee is long gone. Barnes sits in the same LD football passing class as us Gaston County residents. And Gaston County plays 2nd fiddle, now go back to your thread and learn to throw a forward pass.
Not true. Barnes will throw the heck out of the ball if he has the personnel to do so.Surely you jest. Coach Sosebee is long gone. Barnes sits in the same LD football passing class as us Gaston County residents.
Willie Green Jr. threw more passes in a season under Barnes than SP has in the past 5 seasons.Surely you jest. Coach Sosebee is long gone. Barnes sits in the same LD football passing class as us Gaston County residents.
That's stupid. Why couldn't we win 4a or 5a? Crest played 5 playoffs games last year and won handily in all of them. The problem with it is this. They think we don't know. If they played up like Burns and got in a real conference. They'd be done. They're not winning 4a.......... or 5a..........
They pull strings to stay in the romper room.
We have both dropped down. Remember when Crest had about 1800 students and played 4A. My oldest son when he graduated from Crest there was close to 400 in his class. I live in Boiling Springs and every kid in the neighborhood but 1 goes to Thomas Jefferson. All this is true. Classifications matter a lot.
The biggest question mark in the state of NC in the last 50 years has been Shelby's existence in the classes they remain in. I know WHY they work on the down low to keep it there. Shelby sees itself as a little old hometown team...but yall are no 'Maiden' or 'Cherryville'. In 70s/80s Shelby was 2 & 3 times the population size of Belmont. We played in the same conference. The late 90s/early 2000s Shelby drops DOWN to 2a......and yall had more population THEN than Belmont does RIGHT NOW!!!!!
So now yall have found a way to stay in 3a.....the lower side of old 2a class. SMH. I respect Shelby for a lot of reasons.....but this is the one part that I know is fraught with dirty dealings and politics and I will never respect it.
You answered your own question. That's stupid. Why couldn't we win 4a or 5a? Crest played 5 playoffs games last year and won handily in all of them.
We got the only one that could play football. We have both dropped down. Remember when Crest had about 1800 students and played 4A. My oldest son when he graduated from Crest there was close to 400 in his class. I live in Boiling Springs and every kid in the neighborhood but 1 goes to Thomas Jefferson.
