From outside looking in, a quick inside the numbers:
NET (34)
KENPOM (71st offense), (20th Defense)
Leading scorer Godfrey (11.9 PPG) so no superstar, just together basketball and looks like Top 8 guys average between 6 and 10 a game.
Most players shooting 3's at a low to mid 30s clip.
Looks like they will throw multiple 6'10 guys at us so some size inside

Several close losses, yet they know how to win close games as evidenced by many close wins w/in 7 points, key wins over Miami (x2), Louisville, UNC and SMU.

Play a lot of guys. Pretty balanced offensively, but rely on defense. Big front line, but best front line player lost for the year during ACC tourney. Similar tempo to us. Has 52-50 written all over this game.

My take is that all I'm seeing nationally/from outsiders' perspectives is how either uninterested they are in this matchup or how soured they are on Iowa, if they even liked Iowa to begin with (i.e. non-Iowa fans/media members).

A lot more negativity and indifference being hurled towards Iowa as we go through the field of 68, than positivity from what Im seeing is the point I'm trying to make.

Kind of unfortunate........but not unsurprising that these are the attitudes of most fans/media types.

Thanks. That is what I was wondering. Tempo. Hard to tell by just watching highlights. Scoring balanced. Need more than 1 or 2 players to score in double figures.

Actually....

Clemson's 2nd to last game was vs. North Carolina (80-79 win in the ACC Tourney Quarterfinal).

Clemson scored 39 in the 1st half & 41 in the 2nd half.

They played the same 9 players that they did vs Duke in the semifinal.

Looks a lot like us. Close in some big games but didn't win any of the big ones. Really didn't play as many top 10 teams. Did beat more ranked teams than us.

Did have a much better non-conference slate than us. None of these teams are good and only one made the tournament but they were at least playing big conference teams.
Wins: Georgia, WVU, South Carolina, Syracuse, Cincy.

Losses: Georgetown (bad), BYU and Alabama.

Well we're 3-7 in our last 10 games, which doesn't exactly strike fear in the heart of the opposition or say watch out for Iowa. However, we're 4-1 in neutral site games. But the men's bracket is starting to look like the women's bracket when I look at them. I just don't see many upsets on the horizon or even many games where I feel the underdog has a chance. Now the Big Ten is better than the ACC this year and this is certainly a winnable game, and just getting 1 win in the tournament at the moment is a step forward for the program.

Baby step progression is our “playing with house money?”

Alright I’ll play that game. What’s the expectation next year then?
I don't have one.

I don't think it was baby steps. 21 wins is pretty good for year 1. Glad to back in the tourney. I think the Hawks made a solid impression in the minds of the media and coaches - and hopefully the recruits - that this a tough team to play.

I just mean if the Hawks don't beat Clemson it's not going to change my mind that there was progress this year.

Glad to be in the tourney, yes.

I do understand it was only year 1 for Ben but now that he's gotten his feet wet and should know a bit more about what kind of roster he needs to put together, making the tourney has to be the bare minimum expectation. Expectations should continue to rise year after year.

Saw that we are a slight favorite according to this article. I was a bit surprised that we are favored, but 8/9 should be a toss-up (in theory).

Iowa is a 2.5-point favorite over Clemson in the game in March Madness odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook. The Hawkeyes are -135 on the moneyline. The Tigers are +110. The over/under for the game is set at 129.5 points.

Yeah, I think the Hawks have the right coach. When they lost games they were almost always a tough out. I think the program is respected.

But the teams that finished ahead of the Hawks in the B1G aren't going anywhere. So, as you say, the roster is going to have to get better - a lot better.

Hope it does.

I am very confident Iowa hired the right coach.

Let’s beat Clemson and hit that portal hard for year 2!

I hope Ben is good at "money ball" because IOWA isn't going to be paying one player over $2.5M like Michigan did.
