I want to see this lineup on the floor the majority of the time:
G Washington
G Fredrick
G Grady
F Toppin
F Tshiebwe
That’s the best offensive and defensive combo we have.
Most people don’t realize that Fredrick, when healthy, is a very good defender. That’s not my opinion, that is straight from Cal after watching tape on the kid. Also a respected poster (ralphdaltonfan) has mentioned this as well. That’s two guys I trust when it comes to evaluating players. Most of us only saw a handful of Fredrick’s games and most probably saw him after his injury. I admittedly haven’t seen him play much at all, but I trust the stats (47% from 3) and the aforementioned evaluations of his defense.
Toppin is the best option for a 4 out motion offense (which Cal supposedly wants to play). He can defend every perimeter spot and has the length to defend inside. He has the best handles of the 4 man candidates and is the best shooter (31% from 3). Collins might turn out to be better in the long run, but I like Toppin’s combination of skills and experience.
Grady is a fifth year Senior and proven winner. Tshiebwe is our best post option. Washington is a better shooter and overall talent than Wheeler.
I would give Wheeler good minutes off the bench backing up Washington and Fredrick. Bring Allen in for Grady at the 3.
I would play Collins as the backup at the 4 and 5.
Let Brooks, Hopkins, and Ware fight it out for the scraps.
But Cal will likely go with Wheeler at PG, Washington and Grady on the wings, and Brooks and Tshiebwe at the 4 and 5. Or maybe Collins instead of Brooks at the 4.
