CJ Fredrick is a Cat

Fredrick was Iowa's best perimeter defender and he's a really good player. To me he was the key player for their program the past 2 yrs. When he didn't play, they lost games. When he was on the court, they were at their best. Said this before the discussion of him being a transfer came into play--dating back to last offseason when Iowa's team was brought up.

This is a very good pickup.
Cal said CJ held his own on D and he always guarded the best guard. Why so much disdain about his D in this thread?

To be fair Iowa was an entire team of piss poor defenders. There game against Oregon in the NCAA tournament was one of the worst defensive performances in the last 10 years of the sport. I imagine Frederick can become another Corey Kispert....which is okay most nights but Kispert got exposed against Baylor defensively so some nights it’s not good enough.
I agree that Kispert was undressed against Baylor ... no question. He looked lost !!

This isn't meant as a shot at any fan but many only saw him against Oregon in NCAA's and he was not 100%-he shouldn't have been playing--he looked like crap physically against teams in Big 10 Tournament as well. Plantar issue with the foot.

He's not great, but he's not the worst player ever. Also think some are setting themselves up for him not playing a lot due to how Dontaie Allen was treated last year-which is understandable because he should've played more on last year's putrid team.

Agree 100% Cal had to short of a leash on Allen and that did not help Allen's confidences none. At the same time Boston played very poor defense and Cal let him continue to play.

This discussion proves that some on these boards are nothing but people who want to stir the pot. We jus got a 47% 3 point shooter and now you all want to discuss the kids defense? I bet the ones complaining about his defense have never even seen him play. It just shows their true agenda they are not UK fans at all but truly pessimistic people who probably have a "woe is me" attitude about everything in their life...I sort of feel sorry for them...

Lol read my posts, I didn't whine.. Ok, maybe I whined about you. That's only because 90% of your posts are whining about our coach. Sack up bub sometimes life sucks, don't ***** about it all the time, no one wants to hear it man.We had a bad year, get over it, its a game.
90% of my posts are not whining about Cal. Prove it. I haven't even posted much, of late. Most of my posts during the season weren't positive. Because 9-16 isn't positive. Last season is over. Guys like you keep bringing it up. I'd rather look to the future. I normally comment on the present situation with an eye to tomorrow. The present today, I'm feeling better. Maybe the new assistants can help get something positive going. I love the addition of CJ. He's a very good player, and a great shooter. We desperately need some guys who can make shots, especially threes.
So stop with your negativity and enjoy today. I am.

Bottom line is you can nitpick any player's game. Fredrick is no different. Fact of the matter for UK is that we struggled mightily as a team to shoot the ball from everywhere on the court except the free throw line as a whole. CJ is an instant improvement on that. So if he shoots the ball here like he did there then you are going to live with his defense. He's made 83 shots from 3 in his two years. He also, btw, shot 49.4% from 2 last year as well. That would have put him 3rd on the team inside the arc behind Jackson and Brooks.

Also, if we are talking about plantar fasciitis and he gets clear of that you'll probably see a different player on defense. I don't know if any of you have had it, but it's effing awful. When that damn thing starts barking you are in agony. It most definitely would have an affect on anyone's ability to play defense(basketball as whole really). It's painful enough just trying to walk with it let alone making cuts while jogging or springting.
I suffered for months with Plantar Facsiitis. I can't even relate the agony. Props to CJ for even trying with that going on.

Calipari has said many times if a player can't defend he won't play (..."I can't hide you"....)

I'm glad Fredrick will be on the team but I'll believe it when I see it in terms of CJ getting anything other than token minutes. BTW, Fredrick's defensive ratings are worst than Allen's.

We'll see.
Yeah, but Fredrick’s offensive rating is higher than Garza’s. Dude appears to be legit.

@SmedMoley, I quoted your post but accidentally deleted it when I edited mine so I tagged you so it would be obvious who I’m responding to. If anything, all these moves validate everything ppl were complaining about & proves them right. Lol. By addressing the exact issues that fans have been pointing out, he acknowledges that those issues are indeed real & ppl were correct in their assessments. And, that’s all most of the unhappy fans asked for anyway. I’m not happy at all with the state of the program but have said all along that I don’t want Cal fired yet & that he deserves time to fix things.

But, most ppl were seemingly more upset with the overall direction of the program (1 & done) & not necessarily the one horrific season. And, ever since he brought in Grady & the OA rumors started to surface most ppl have given him the benefit of the doubt. But, ppl will go to extraordinary lengths in the name of fan shaming, logic be damned.
It's all good man. We usually see things the same way. You're fine.

I think most of us were aggravated at those who wouldn't admit things were wrong. The ones that jumped on anyone that rightfully critical. It made a huge divide and we need to stop it. Cal is here for another year, and I'm waiting to see some changes go into motion. I think we already are, but I want to see more. Nobody expects Cal to dominate like 2009-2015. We do expect to do better than 9-16 and being the laughingstock of college basketball. People are going to talk about that. Right now, I prefer to talk about continuing to get this roster straightened out and start next season. After Stoops and the football team take the next step. Can't wait until August.

I think most are just taking a wait and see approach. Saar and Harrow were great players in the ACC before they transferred to Kentucky and we saw how those worked out.

For the record I love college basketball and have watched Frederick play 15+ times and he is a sub-par college level defender. I mentioned the Oregon game because Iowa was a bad defensive team all year but that game clearly illustrated just how horrifically bad they could be so the quote today about him being their best perimeter defender shouldn't carry as much weight as a lot of fans on this board are attributing to it. The advanced analytics quoted earlier in this thread back up what my game viewings showed which is a poor defender who grades out as worse than Donte Allen who has been much maligned by Cal for his lack of defensive prowess. I really enjoy your posts and contributions to this board BTW.

Been off the board for several days, just noticed your comment re Carr and a waiver. Is this based on his earlier transfer?
Yeah, I read the other day since he already transferred from Pitt to MN so he would need a waiver. His coach left so shouldn't be a big deal like with Sarr, at least I wouldn't think so.

I’ve been a critic of Fredrick, but his offensive rating is so exceptional that you overlook the defensive rating. Those two stats suggest that Fredrick is a plus-19 player over 100 possessions, meaning he scores 19 more points than he allows. That translates to a box score +/- of around +13 in a normal game, which is off the charts.

By comparison, our best +/- player by a mile last year was Isaiah Jackson who was just two points better at +21 and is a likely first round draft pick. Dontaie Allen was a -0.6, so he gave up as many points as he scored, and was a slight negative on balance.

Thanks for the very illuminating post and analytics breakdown I throughly enjoyed it. I agree with you that he will be a net positive to the team overall IF his notoriously defensive minded head coach gives him significant minutes. He reminds me of Ohio State’s John Diebler with a floater right now. I also have high hopes for Collins shot blocking potential as a help defender.

I'm happy with his addition. It's one thing to shoot 46 or 47 percent on threes for one year; do it two years in row and you can say he is a 46% three point shooter.

"They had a reason" ?? You mean you, cause you're one of them, the whiners. We had a bad year, waaaaah. Cal gets a pass for bringing our program back from the dead and giving us #8 and a great decade run. Those of you that can't see that are the ones who have unrealistic expectations amd give our fan base a bad name. Facts
Nobody gets a pass at UK. Especially the guy making 9 bills a year.

I’ve never, not even once, said I want Cal fired now. But, I’m not gonna blindly follow & pretend everything is perfect when it clearly isn’t. If that makes me an embarrassment then Cousin Eddie, it is.

Because he has already transferred from Pitt to MN. It shouldn't be an issue, like with Sarr his coach left, but I read the other day that with it being his second transfer he would need a wavior.
Haha no bro. Not how it works.

Dude, I'm not tripping, I don't love Carr like some on here. I would rather have Wright of Colorado. I'm not saying he needs a wavier, I read it on one of the UK sites yesterday. They could be wrong, but the same thing was mentioned with McClung.

Here you go, found it. Also @LosGatos here you go. It was MSN/Courier-Journal. They could be wrong, like I said I read it, not sure either way. Here's what they say, "Since Carr already transferred once from Pittsburgh to Minnesota, he would likely not qualify for the NCAA’s new one-time transfer rule and would need a waiver to play next season at a new school.

If you click on the one-time wavier rule above in blue you will see to be eligible you must not have transferred before.

I don't know. I think he is the only one that has already transferred. He might be fine though if he finished his degree and with his coach leaving. I don't know. I'm really hoping there is stuff going on behind the scenes. I mean Wright is good, but I don't see him getting drafted, and not sure he returns to Colorado. With Pippen same thing, not sure he gets drafted and not sure if he would want to go back to Vandy. Even though he said UK was his dream school and he wanted an offer he might be a little pissy now after not getting one even if we did offer now. I have no idea. I really hope somehow TyTy picks us and then we add a vet. He moved up in the new ratings today to 16th from 33rd.

I just hope we add a PG soon and 2 overall. One won't be enough. We need to be more like when we had Ashton, Quickly and Maxey out there together. I really hope Cal and O are working behind the scenes and a big name lands with us. What I don't get is there have been some good ones that we didn't put much into. With needing 2 I think we should have gone after one of them. I am not big on Wheeler and hope that isn't a desperation play. I felt like when we didn't go after some of the good ones that were out there that Cal had his guys somehow, but now not sure, but hopeful.
