Here’s my writeup from our trip last year after the Purdue game.

tl;dr We had a great time. Get the City Pass and use it to the max. Good food doesn’t have to be expensive. Get a Chicago dog and deep dish pizza. If you’re into coffee, check out Starbucks Roastery.

Lou Malnatis pizza. I love deep dish and this is the best.
Al’s original Beef is awesome. But you can go to Portillos and try the hot dog and the beef. I love Chicago dogs, we just made them at our house last night!
Gibson’s is like any other high end steakhouse(Capital Grille, Ruth).
if you want an authentic Chicago steakhouse go to gene and Georgettis.
since you will be there in August, reserve a window seat at the ROOF on the Witt. Awesome place with amazing views of the city!
If it’s not too hot head to the Shore club and walk around. Have a cocktail. Cool spot for sunny summer days in Chicago.

take the train from Glencoe

I’m in Glencoe and can walk to Ravinia. But anybody training to Ravinia from city should get off at Ravinia Park (limited service, but close) or Braeside.

My preferred deep dish is Pequod’s on Clybourn.

Lincoln Park zoo is modest as far as a zoo goes, but “cute,” centrally located, and free. The adjacent conservatory is small and a great destination in winter.

Skyscraper “roof” views are cool if you’re into them, but overrated, IMO.

Museums by my rank are Art Institute, Science & Industry, Field, MoCA.

I don’t do fancy restaurants, so I defer there.

North Ave Beach is worth seeing at its peak, but occasionally gets overrun by delinquent packs of teens.

Mag Mile is meh - just crowded and past it’s prime.

Oak Park Frank Lloyd Wright tours can be cool if you love that stuff.

Wrigley and area has lost its charm - I lived 3 blocks from the park 2005-2012.

I grew up in Northbrook and yes this place is great. The Palmer House Hilton is a cool place to stay - has an awesome lobby. It's very old and historic and as such not all the rooms are the same - I have been in small rooms and ones with 2 bathroom in it - I always ask for a large room when checking in. Visctory Tap on Michigan ave is a preety cool old world type Italian Restaurant - dark wood inside and good food.

I suggested the train cause it’s festive. Maybe we rode from winnekta, can’t remember

On a slightly more serious note, the Italian Hot Beef sandwich in Chicago ranks with the Philly Cheese Steak, the Baltimore Pit Beef, the Los Angeles French Dip, and a few others as a great American beef sandwich. The good ones sound like they could be from Philly -- Tony's, Luke's, Nana's, Johnnie's, Al's -- but they're awfully good.

Cheesesteaks, but with Au jus. What more could you want? Game recognizes game.
