Changes You Would Make to the College Game...

4 quarters has really sped up the women's games. The bonus reset after each quarter would help eliminate games that drag on when a team gets in the bonus 5-6 minutes into a half.

It would be one less media timeout per half too.

Every other level of basketball plays quarters except men's college basketball. I always thought it should stay halves, but I'm slowly coming around to maybe they should do it too.

Defensive 3 seconds in the key. Basically bans zone and that pack it in strategy. It would benefit the ish out of UK.

No!
So you couldn't play behind a post player, you would have to front him. And with refs having to count how long every defender is in the key, they would pay less attention to other more important stuff. Sounds like just a way to give the offense a big advantage over the defense. Whether it be basketball, football, or baseball I like to see some good defense.

I didn't read everything yet so excuse this if it was mentioned.

Since there is a debate over switching to 6 fouls (not really for it), how about no fouling out after 5 fouls? You punish the team that has the player with 5 by giving the other team 2 free throws and the ball back if you foul and you are at 5 or more already. That way you don't lose a key player, but you also penalize the player for being in the game with 5 fouls and fouling.

While I am opposed to upping it to 6 fouls. This ^ seems like a creative compromise.
2 shots AND the ball, that player better be damn good for the coach to risk it and have him on the court.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but my biggest would probably be keeping the players on the court during official reviews. It bothers me when a team is out of timeouts but gets a free one at a critical moment in the game because the refs review the clock.

The OU/WVU game was a perfect example the other night. OU scores with 2.5 seconds left and WVU is out of timeouts. Officials stop the game to go review the clock, ultimately adding 0.2 seconds to make it 2.7. Meanwhile, WVU (who again has no timeouts) gets probably a full minute to draw up a play. Part of coaching is managing timeouts, so I don't like it when a team that has used theirs up get free one in critical situations... I don't like the review in and of itself unless there is reason to believe a clock error was made, but if we are going to review it at least keep the players on the court and away from their coach (unless the coach has a timeout and elects to use it).

I ask this because I know this is a resolutions oriented board. I think we can all agree that the officiating is getting worse and worse. There has to be some sort of happy medium between the freedom of movement that has been implemented in today's game, and the physical nature of how the game used to be played. Blowing the whistle every time down the damn court has become unbearable on the players and the overall watch-ability for the fans. I am not sure if they have a mandatory seminar or convention during each off-season that the refs attend, but if they don't, they should. After each season, each coach should vote on the 3 best/3 worst officials of the year. 3 best get a pay raise, 3 worst get perma-ban for a year or give half their salary back. Something needs to be done. I'm looking at you TV Teddy.

- Go to four 10 minute quarters.
- Go to 6 fouls/player. People pay to see the best players and stars play. We don't want to see them parked on the bench because they pick up 2 quick ones in the first half.
- Shortening the shot clock has made the game better, imo.
- A clear flop/trying to trick the official should be assessed a flagrant 1 with 2 shots and the ball back. We can call it the Dook Rule.
- If a team makes three consecutive buckets and gets three consecutive defensive stops, give them a ball that is on fire that they can't miss with.

How would you improve the game? Any other ideas?
On a breakaway layup where the offensive player is fouled in back or mid court I would award two foul shots AND possession of the ball to the team whose player as fouled.

Clear path foul. Yeah, that is a good idea like the NBA does.

I think the flopping is cheating. A foul or a violation is something that gives a player an illegal advantage. Flopping creates such. Not to mention it often times puts other players at risk. It should be reviewable just like flagrant or possession calls.
Once the players realize they can be reviewed and cost their team two shots and possession of the ball, it will stop. Coaches will not risk it.
But who is going to determine if you bump me hard enough to make me fall. I might be physically weak and get blown over by the slightest contact. Or it may take a tornado.
The big issue is why did players start flopping. It was because when they stood there and took the contact, the officials would not call the charge.
Making a new rule to counter poor officiating is not the right solution for me.

If 6 foul encourages more fouls then cut back to 4 or even 3. Will that help? No. The issue isn't they are playing too rough. It's the refs calling non fouls or touch fouls. I don't want a game were everyone plays like a *****. Let them play the freaking game. If they don't call every single powder puff call then 5 would be fine. Fact is we watch games now to see a free throw contest with the best players on the bench too much. Some things need to change.
Explain touch foul.
It is either a foul or not a foul.

You're missing the point. It's not so much bad officiating with flopping, it's that those kind of plays are not basketball, it belongs in the drama club. Think back the flop by the UCONN player in the FF against UK. Nothing there but the ref made a call and it hurt UK. Make that play review-able and the penalty of it being a flop of 2 shots and the ball, big difference and less likely a player does that.

Are you so sheltered haven't heard the term touch foul. I'm talking when the player is barely touched or brushed. No foul should be called but it is. I've seen shooters go up for a shot and they were barely grazed or maybe close but no contact was made but its called. If its like the contact made by brushing with a feather it shouldn't be called.

Need to get rid of the clock stoppages in the final minute of the game especially when a team scores with under 5 seconds left and the other team has no timeouts left and they stop the clock to add 0.3 seconds giving the other team a time out to set up a play. I miss the games where a team comes down and scores with under 5 seconds left and the other team has to inbounds the ball and push it for the final shot win or lose it makes the game that much better to see it all happen in the final seconds and not stop the damn game to check if they need to add 0.2 or 0.3 seconds. 10 years ago there was none of this and the games ended just fine we didn't need to add all the stops.

The other thing goes hand in hand with this if there is a stop clock do not allow players to go back to their benches to see the coaches force them to stay on the court away from their bench.

I've been wanting 6 fouls for some time. Too often the starters are on the bench most of the first half. Just one bad call with an actual foul and you ride the pine.

I don't like six fouls. Try something different, like players don't foul out, but every foul past their 5th is two shots and possession, like a tech. Keeps the player in the game, but with a bigger penalty for fouling.

Apparently I didn't read everything either. Just duplicated another post.

Who determines if a play is a basketball play. Flopping is as bad as the offensive player screaming to get bait the official into calling a foul. Screaming is about as much of basketball as falling down is.
If a player wants to take a dive, let him. It gives the offense an advantage. If the official sees it as a charge/block/no call, then he should make the appropriate action. I simply have no issue with a player flopping.

Getting fouled is like being pregnant. You cannot be a little of either.

Shot clock, flop tech, move the 3 because it is silly not to match. Get rid of possession arrow, tie up go to the defender. Lets reward defense, esp since we are adjusting the foul being called in the offenses favor.

There it is. YOU have no problem with it so it should not be addressed. It is a problem and it is why the NBA addressed it. The college game should as well.
You must approve of the way certain teams play then. Good to know.

The circle area is a man's area and maybe they should do away with a lot of the fouls in there. Let them battle in there for position and rebounds. You can still call normal reach in fouls, but a lot of the push in the backs and over the backs are very iffy. I see guys all the time jump forward on a rebound when they feel someone touching their back. Plus a guy that is much stronger that is backing you down and you flop to get the call should be a no call in the circle. Just play on.

Interesting and thoughtful, but I want to keep the college game. Just retrain the refs so they are consistent and accountable.

I agree about the officiating, but not much else. I like how the college game is a distinct. I like the pace of 20 mintute halves. I'm old school and believe that the dh in baseball, like the shot clock, are communist conspiracies. Still, I appreciate your ideas.

Go back to the 4 regions like in the past, East, Mideast, Midwest, West. Keep teams more in their geographic area, only can be moved 1 region over their location.
Have an upper and lower site for each region.... Example East: Boston U and Raleigh L, Mideast: Cleveland U and Atlanta L Midwest: Minneapolis U and Oklahoma City L, West: Seattle U and San Diego L.
This would be for the 1st and 2nd round of course, with the Region semis and Finals at another site.

I think a team should only be able to call a time out when it has possession or during a dead ball. I hate it when a team scores and then calls a time out before the other team can throw the ball in.

According to who. So because the officials cannot improve and make the proper call, the rules should be changed.
it is just like the little circle under the goal. The officials could not make the appropriate call, so the rules are change. And now we have this little section of the court that has different rules. It makes no sense.
Either teach the officials to make the proper call or get better officials. No need to change the rules.

Should we go back to no shot clock as well? How about not letting freshman play either? How about the players not being allowed to dunk the ball? Wasn't it fun to watch a team hold the ball for 4-5 minuted and not take a shot? You want to get rid of the 3 point shot? The game and rules evolve, always have.
They put in the shot clock because a team holding wasn't good for the game. They allowed freshman to play because it was good for the players and the game.

10 second shot clock
add 4pt shot from mid-court, and 5pt shot from past other FT line.
Coaches only get 2 TO's per half, but can get 1 more by doing the Makarayna.
Clock doesn't stop except in final 4 minutes, or due to officials timeout.
If a team commits a flagrant foul, then the other team gets to play the next 2 minutes with a 6th player
Every school is required to have a "mystery curtain" like ASU has for opponent FT shooting.

Which of those rules is the direct reflection of the officials failing to properly call the game.

I absolutely hate that rule. Why reward the offense because they are losing? It is so much more dramatic having to pass to half court from the baseline and heaving a 42' shot to try and win it. You let them pass in from half court and it is much easier to get an open look for a higher % shot.

Rewards good coaching too.
You'll think why reward the offense when they are losing when the ref blows a terrible call that results in your team throwing the half court pass after free throws to put your team down 1.

Imagine the KU game in the tournament where they miss the blatant walk- for hypothetical reasoning- pretend the bucket went in with a around 1 second to go. I think it's great to at least give the team the opportunity without a full court prayer.

  • Physically and mentally fit officials who are accountable for their actions
  • Install the traditional 4 quarters of play
  • Bring back the jump ball - its part of the game
  • Bring back the 5 seconds call - dumb to get rid of it
  • Flopping = Technical foul - two shots and the ball
  • Tripping = Disqualifying level two flagrant foul
  • Work with the NBA for a two and done scenario
  • Allow parents to profit on a kids likeness or future earning (within limits)
