Play more live ball basketball. Why do the refs have to touch the ball on a turnover that goes out of bounds? Call the turnover and let the players roll.

I hear ya, and it would be nice. But there's the issue of clock management.

I'm ambivalent about quarters. Would reset the bonus, a good thing if you get whistled for 7 fouls in 4 minutes for instance. Would get rid of 1 and 1 - don't care. Worry about stoppage/tv timeouts. Right now 4 TV timeouts per half. I doubt they'd cut it to 3 (once a quarter and between) and 2 per quarter adds another stoppage per half.

Widen the lane, go to international 3 point line. Players are bigger and faster than they used to be, go to the larger dimensions to open things up.

Don't add fouls. As others point out, NBA/International/NCAA all have one foul per 8 minutes to foul out.

Probably out of mainstream opinion but leave alternating possession as it is. A jump ball just benefits whoever the taller player is (doubling post with a guard and getting tie up becomes worthless).

I'm fine with 4 ten minute quarters, but 5 fouls is plenty I think.

Go back to a 32 team NCAAT. More doesn't always mean better.

I've always advocated eliminating fouling out. Basketball is the only major sport where you can be removed from the game for committing an arbitrary number of infractions during the normal course of play (i.e. I'm not talking about being disqualified for flagrant fouls). How stupid would it be for the NFL to pass a new rule saying that a defender is disqualified after his third flag for pass interference?

-In college football, a player can be disqualified for a single targeting penalty or two unsportsmanlike penalties.

-A player can be disqualified from the game and the next in soccer for accumulation of fouls resulting in cards.

-A player in the NFL can be disqualified for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

1) get rid of flopping

2) strip teams that commit institutional academic fraud of all their titles

3) strip teams that hire hookers for players and recruits of all their titles

Grabbing the ball after a made basket should be more strictly monitored. I see players do this all the time. They "accidentally" kick the ball, grab it and put it down etc. to slow down fast break opportunities.

This is actually one area where I think there's been vast improvement over the past two years, in both college and especially the NBA.

Players hardly touch the ball after a made basket anymore, which is generally a good thing. (Only time it's not is when the ball is rolling into the court and none of the defenders are willing to pick it up out of fear for being called for a technical, so they have to wait for a referee to retrieve it.)

Agree with this. Alternating possession is a good compromise IMO. If a team causes a tie-up they either get the ball or get the right to the ball at the next tie-up. Either way it's a positive.

Never agreed with Vitale who constantly railed against it, because he never provided a better alternative.

i do not want 4 10 minute quarters
i do not want 6 fouls, as it is both the NBA and CBB average the same amount of fouls per minute

i agree with everything else
Could not disagree with you more. Both those changes are badly needed.

Vitale has harped on this forever about it doesn't reward defensive effort, yet I have never heard him say a word about calling a TO to prevent a 5 sec. count or a 10 sec count, that is really screwing a team for great defensive effort. A called TO should not take place until the next dead ball. That would put an end to that injustice and improve the flow of the game

Agree, that was one of the things I was going to mention if I ever put together a list. IMO timeouts should only be called during a dead ball and only by the player.

What other sport can someone be in the middle of a play and just stop and call timeout?

OK, here's my list. Many have already been noted.

First of all, I'm OK with going to 10 minute quarters. Don't really have a strong preference either way. I'm against going to 6 fouls. To me the more fouls allowed the more fouls people will make. I'm generally against more fouls and more free throws. Also to me part of the interest in basketball is to see people come off the bench and perform in pressure situations, so the fact that a star player fouls out is not the end of the world like it is for some.

Basically anything which helps to improve the continuity and flow of the game I'm supportive of, while things which delay and interrupt the game I'm in favor of getting rid of if possible.

1.) A flop receives a technical foul

2.) Only players can call timeouts and they can only do so during a dead ball.

3.) Light goes off with the shot-clock, not just at end of game (may already be implemented).

4.) Referees are held more accountable via the following process (which I've posted before) or something similar:

5.) The validity of three-point shots is checked during timeouts (rather than stopping the game). This is how the NBA does it and it works well.

6.) The NCAA Selection committee is abolished in favor of an agreed upon computer model. I've written about this before at the following link:

Eliminating the NCAA Selection Committee

UK's rifle team attends every game. SEC refs wear shirts with bulls eye targets on the back. Screw up on a call, break into a dance, make more two steps toward the monitor equals target of opportunity. Also refs carry orange whistles so they so up in the scopes better.

I ask this because I know this is a resolutions oriented board. I think we can all agree that the officiating is getting worse and worse. There has to be some sort of happy medium between the freedom of movement that has been implemented in today's game, and the physical nature of how the game used to be played. Blowing the whistle every time down the damn court has become unbearable on the players and the overall watch-ability for the fans. I am not sure if they have a mandatory seminar or convention during each off-season that the refs attend, but if they don't, they should. After each season, each coach should vote on the 3 best/3 worst officials of the year. 3 best get a pay raise, 3 worst get perma-ban for a year or give half their salary back. Something needs to be done. I'm looking at you TV Teddy.

- Go to four 10 minute quarters.
- Go to 6 fouls/player. People pay to see the best players and stars play. We don't want to see them parked on the bench because they pick up 2 quick ones in the first half.
- Shortening the shot clock has made the game better, imo.
- A clear flop/trying to trick the official should be assessed a flagrant 1 with 2 shots and the ball back. We can call it the Dook Rule.
- If a team makes three consecutive buckets and gets three consecutive defensive stops, give them a ball that is on fire that they can't miss with.

How would you improve the game? Any other ideas?

- Any defensive or offensive foul committed in the last 4 minutes will lead to 2 free throws and the ball.

GBB!!!

Agree the alternating possession is a good compromise. So you are rewarding the defense half the time.
If you go back to the jump ball you are rewarding the taller player or the higher jumper. So if you can't out jump the other guy why even try to tie a guy up, all you are doing is increasing the chance to be called for a foul.

The flopping thing...gimme that. Not sure how duke would play offense or defense though. I would like that.
I do not care about flopping. If a player wants to flop and take himself out of the play, good. It is still up the official to determine the proper call, was it a flop or not.

Official timeouts at every 5 minutes instead of every 4.

Each team only gets 1 timeout per half. I feel that practice and preparation are key for success. Calling timeout to regroup and stop the clock cheapens the end of games when your team should have a strategy in place from practice. All sports should cut down on the timeouts.

The problem is they do call it and most of the time there is nothing to call. I wish they would put in the rule the same as a flagrant foul if it was a real flop. Other team gets two shots and the ball. It would soon go away. Truly enforce and it would clean the game up. Not all this ticky tack stuff they are calling now.

I don't like the 4 quarters idea. Halves give the college games a certain flow and I prefer that. I am fine with a deeper 3 pt shot (NBA range).

I like the shorter shot clock. Maybe we could change it to a 2 second lane, give 3 seconds to in bound, etc. it would look like a pin ball machine out there.

But isn't that more of failure of the official. I do not see the need to create a rule because the officials are making a bad call.

NCAA Tournament seeding and matchups should be based on sophisticated analytics, with #1 playing #64 etc... Game locations should be selected by the schools in order of rank based on availability, with #1 picking first, #2 second, etc

So you don't think flopping hurts the game or is a form of cheating? So when a player flails and falls down when nothing happened, refs should just continue to give them the call and reward their team and penalize the other team?

Cool topic/thread. I'd go:

1. Eliminate the "free" timeout when teams without a timeout late get benefit from refs taking a look at something that doesn't need to be looked at. Example--let's put 0.1 back on clock--but ignore that said team let ball lay on the ground for 4-5 secs earlier in game after an opponent's made basket and then threw ball to ref only to get it back and then finally inbound. If seconds only matter when behind late--think of all the time wasted by teams earlier--which leads me to.....

2. Enforce stricter 5 sec inbounds calls. This designated inbounds passer garbage is ridiculous-specifically when not facing any defensive pressure. Guy gets ball--waits for the "inbounder" to run from halfcourt--again--why is your player not knowing his role if that is what he's supposed to do? Officials give teams too much leeway here. Start count and keep game moving.

3. Emphasis on giving game back to players---no live ball timeouts, any foul being used as strategy (i.e. you foul up 3 under 10 secs left in game) is two FT and ball--to encourage players to decide outcome of a game and let fans enjoy the game--imagine the ending of Nova-UNC if Villanova fouled up 3 late. I much rather enjoyed the shot making and talent of the guys in the game over the "strategic coaching" of guys in suits on sidelines.

4. Quit worrying about keeping home teams and lesser teams "in the game". If there is a discrepancy in talent or how a team approaches the game--let it play out. Some teams fire jumpers all game or are hitting shots, so why the need to reward them with FT just because a coach or fans say "It's 10 to 3 in fouls...." well some teams don't foul as much as others. Rock Fight teams tend to foul because they emphasize weight lifting and bodying players more then skill. Jump shooting teams are easier to officiate--or should be. Pressing teams tend to foul more then halfcourt defensive teams. Yet--you always hear "They are in double bonus and they have 3 team fouls". Well, you don't have Fox, Monk, Briscoe driving the ball to rim and Bam being physically superior to Jon Swarthtooth the local "hero".

Life isn't fair--don't punish the superior teams for being better.

I've been wanting 6 fouls for some time. Too often the starters are on the bench most of the first half. Just one bad call with an actual foul and you ride the pine. Refs are terrible and need to be reviewed after each game. Make them accountable for blatantly bad calls. Allow a coach to complain about it without being punished.

Also stop allowing the offense player to drive right into the defensive player and call the foul on the defense. The big men can't look at anyone without getting a foul. The man initiating the contact should not be rewarded.

1) Not at all a form of cheating. No more than a player yelling when he shoots the ball trying to get the official to call a foul. Do you want the ref to call a technical foul on this. To me it is the same, baiting an official to make a call.
2) No. The ref should be in a position to make the call he sees. If he is calling fouls that are not there, he is a bad ref. If he sees contact call it. If he doesn't see it, play on, regardless if the player flops.

What bothers me more is the fact that most players cannot dribble the ball anymore without carrying it. Allowing 3 or 4 steps on a layup. The fact that continuation to the basket has entered college basketball. If you are not in the air, you are not shooting the ball.

That is easy. You give the team fouled the choice of getting the ball back (in bounds play) or shoot the FTs. Teams foul in the final 2 minutes to get the ball back quicker. If the other team can re-inbound, with the shot clock resetting, then teams would foul much less.

I completely agree with your 2nd one, allowing drivers to initiate contact on the drive & go to the line.
But I don't agree with the 6 fouls. That will just cause more fouls, as players will know they have another one to use. The starters on the bench in the first half is a coaching problem. There usually is no reason to bench a player with just 2 fouls. You want to maximize the minutes your best players are on the court. I would rather have 32 minutes of a guy who fouls out with 4 minutes to go, than have 24 minutes of a guy that doesn't foul out.

While flopping and yelling/screaming are similar in that they are attempts to get the ref to make a call, they are also different. Flopping puts other players at risk of injury with a body taking up a bunch of floor space for someone to step on & hurt their ankle or knee. Yelling does not do that.
Both are immature, punk-*** pansy, ways of playing a sport.

To your 3-4 steps for a layup, I agree with you. Related to that is the jump-step/stop. So step, jump and land on both feet is just 2 steps. WTF! That should be banned too.

I think the flopping is cheating. A foul or a violation is something that gives a player an illegal advantage. Flopping creates such. Not to mention it often times puts other players at risk. It should be reviewable just like flagrant or possession calls.
Once the players realize they can be reviewed and cost their team two shots and possession of the ball, it will stop. Coaches will not risk it.

If 6 foul encourages more fouls then cut back to 4 or even 3. Will that help? No. The issue isn't they are playing too rough. It's the refs calling non fouls or touch fouls. I don't want a game were everyone plays like a *****. Let them play the freaking game. If they don't call every single powder puff call then 5 would be fine. Fact is we watch games now to see a free throw contest with the best players on the bench too much. Some things need to change.

I didn't read everything yet so excuse this if it was mentioned.

Since there is a debate over switching to 6 fouls (not really for it), how about no fouling out after 5 fouls? You punish the team that has the player with 5 by giving the other team 2 free throws and the ball back if you foul and you are at 5 or more already. That way you don't lose a key player, but you also penalize the player for being in the game with 5 fouls and fouling.

1) Only 2 officials on the court...3rd moves to the sideline as a full time league replay official to speed up replay...and 3 on the court just call way too much, too many stoppages, let them play...and when they do go to replay it takes like 20 minutes to figure it out for these dinosaurs that probably still rock flip phones.

2) Go to 4 Quarters to eliminate the 1-1 for the last 10 minutes+ of each half...far fewer ft's even in a TV Teddy game has got to be a good thing.

3) Take away 1 full timeout from each team because....4 quarters, extra break every 10 minutes so they don't need it.

4) Replace the 1 timeout with 1 coaches review/challenge. Win the challenge no harm, lose and you lose another timeout and must have one to challenge. Last 2 minutes its on the refs....just like football.

5) Coaches can call timeouts again...Don't tell me the refs don't know whos yelling timeout when the coaches call it bs that led to this rule change...only sport that coaches cant, just dumb....and use 3rd replay official to stop play for this since they can see the coaches calling for it sooner.

6) NBA rule to allow ball to be advanced to half court if you have a timeout in the last 2 minutes. Just creates more intrigue, strategy, excitement in the last few minutes.
