Changes You Would Make to the College Game...

I ask this because I know this is a resolutions oriented board. I think we can all agree that the officiating is getting worse and worse. There has to be some sort of happy medium between the freedom of movement that has been implemented in today's game, and the physical nature of how the game used to be played. Blowing the whistle every time down the damn court has become unbearable on the players and the overall watch-ability for the fans. I am not sure if they have a mandatory seminar or convention during each off-season that the refs attend, but if they don't, they should. After each season, each coach should vote on the 3 best/3 worst officials of the year. 3 best get a pay raise, 3 worst get perma-ban for a year or give half their salary back. Something needs to be done. I'm looking at you TV Teddy.

- Go to four 10 minute quarters.
- Go to 6 fouls/player. People pay to see the best players and stars play. We don't want to see them parked on the bench because they pick up 2 quick ones in the first half.
- Shortening the shot clock has made the game better, imo.
- A clear flop/trying to trick the official should be assessed a flagrant 1 with 2 shots and the ball back. We can call it the Dook Rule.
- If a team makes three consecutive buckets and gets three consecutive defensive stops, give them a ball that is on fire that they can't miss with.

How would you improve the game? Any other ideas?

Remove Coach K from the game, restore basketball back to an even playing field for the other ~350 teams.

After that, anything that makes it closer to the NBA game.. 3pt line, shot clock. Not sure why you should play the game one way and then another way at the next level. Make it the same.. these guys are 6'7" and can run the coast to coast in 1.2 seconds.. no reason it can't be the same as NBA rules.

Why don't you want quarters? Once a team hits 4 fouls in a quarter, the other team shoots 2 free throws.

1. Make the officials employees of the NCAA. No more of this contractor junk. You work for the NCAA and are assigned games. Then the NCAA and conferences can reprimand, punish, and fire the bad.
2. 4 officials per game (3 on the court at a time) with a supervisor either in person or watching from a center of operations type location. TV Teddy gets out of hand, have him sit and put the 4th official in. Doug Shows-off trying to make it about him, sit him down for a while. When the announcers start calling that the official has been replaced, the embarrassment should have them clean their act up.
3. Punish floppers! Like the NBA did to eliminate what Divac used to do against Shaq. First time is a warning, second they are suspend for the first half of the next game. Have it keep getting worse after that.

If we use the on fire ball idea, I say we have LED projectors to spotlight certain 'Hot Spots' on the court worth more points each time.

I am ok w/ going to quarters, but don't see the benefit other than having 2 more exciting times the clock runs to 0.0.

I see no benefit to going to 6 fouls. I also don't pay to see a hacking contest. Play by the rules and don't foul if you want to stay on the court. If players were given 6 fouls, they would just foul more because they could and we would have more games like last night (yuck). Players just need to adjust how they play. Also in most cases it is a stupid coaching practice to bench a player for the remainder of the first half with 2 fouls. They are not maximizing the number of minutes that player gets. I can see after the 2nd 1st half foul benching them to get a breather and remind them to not get another cheap foul. But then get them back in there. I would rather have 30 minutes from my star player (but he misses the last 4), and 20 minutes (but he plays the last 4).

I agree shortening the shot clock has improved it, but I wouldn't shorten it any more.

I also agree we need the Duke (anti-flopping) rule.

I think I might extend the 3pt line out. It just doesn't seem right that such an easy shot is worth 50% more.

I would ban the jump-step (or is it jump-stop). If your feet land at the same time it is ok, but if one comes down before the other then it's a travel. WTF!

A lot of what I want to see, is just enforcement of current rules. Much of which would stop players from pushing off with their free arm (is getting called more), and hooking (rarely called).

Use a penalty box like hockey so much time per foul . Full pads eliminate the walk and charge calls and no fouls called in the paint . Loser has to walk home .

I just think it's a better service to college players. Makes the transition easier, probably helps scouting too. But maybe you have a point. More teams are like Vermont, than they are like Kentucky, a team full of NBA players anyways. Maybe you need to separate Church and State..

I agree that officials should be employees of either the NCAA or the conferences.

However, I don't agree at all with 4 officials per game. In fact, I would go the other way and go back to 2 officials per game. However, I'd have the duos work together almost all the time, so they can become a unified crew instead of the mish-mash of official crews we have now. Having dedicated partners can only help the officials work together better. I also think with 3 officials, they almost see too much, and feel the need to get in their share of calls. With replay as ingrained as it is now, the risk of "missing" a crucial play down the stretch due to having only 2 officials is greatly diminished.

I would cut the referees down to 2 and make them full time and available for questions after the games.

Also like the dook rule. If you've faked an injury, stopping play to cause a monitor review, and there's been no contact, you should get a flagrant 1. There has to be some jeopardy for pulling that crap.

Quarters: If they cut the timeouts to under 5's in each 10 minute quarter I could get on board with it.

Hanging on the rim - chin ups, knees around the rim etc should be a T, but put in a provision to allow a player to right himself before letting go of the rim to avoid injury. Call it consistently.

Grabbing the ball after a made basket should be more strictly monitored. I see players do this all the time. They "accidentally" kick the ball, grab it and put it down etc. to slow down fast break opportunities.

Fouls: This is a toughy. I think it's far too easy for a crooked ref to whistle cheap fouls sending a player to the bench. Maybe make the 6th and subsequent foul 2 shots and the ball.

On free throw fouls, give the team the option of the ball out of bounds instead.

Otherwise, one free throw.
Fouled on a three attempt 1 free throw worth 3 pts.
1 and 1's and 2 shot fouls become 1 free throw worth 2.
The "and one" fouls become 1 free throw worth 1.

2. if there is a tie up go to a jump ball. this alternate possession is bull crap. this is the only fair way to atleast give the defensive team some type of reward for it's effort.
3. move 3pt line back to what the nba now uses.
4. call a t or atleast a personal foul for flopping and faking getting hit in the face. this would stop a lot of players from trying to cheat their way to getting to the free throw line and having needless fouls called when they don't happen.

Why did the defense earn the jump ball? They didn't get the ball any more than the offense did. If anything I would get rid of possession arrow and do an actual jump ball

In fact, the alternating possession arrow is probably the most fair way and efficient way to do it. It doesn't stop the game for a jump ball and ensures that a 50/50 possession is 50/50.

Remove all ambiguity and remove the hanging on the rim technical.

Change the "alternating possession" to a "half steal". Works like this. On a held ball, the defensive team is awarded a "half steal". Every two "half steals" by the same team awards the defensive team the ball out on the opponents baseline.

Example:
Team B has possession, is tied up by A, A is awarded a half steal, B gets the ball out on their own sideline. (A has a half steal, B has none)
Team A has possession, is tied up by B, B is awarded a half steal, A gets the ball out on their own sideline. (Both have a half steal)
Team B has possession, is tied up by A, A is awarded a half steal, A gets the ball out on B's baseline. (A has two half steals and takes possession from B, who still has their own half steal)
Team B has possession, is tied up by A, A is awarded a half steal, B gest the ball out on their own sideline.(Again both have a half steal)
Team B has possession, is tied up by A, A is awarded a half steal, A gets the ball out on B's baseline. (A has two half steals and takes possession from B, who still has their own half steal)
Team A has possession, is tied up by B, B is awarded a half steal, B gets the ball out on A's baseline. (B has two half steals, takes possession from A, now neither has a half steal and both most tie up the other team twice to take possession)

Notice that team "A" took over possession from "B" two straight times which cannot happen with the "alternating possession rule". Which rewards team "A" who is causing the most tie-ups.

May sound more compliated that it really is. All it requires is a half-steal indicator on the scoreboard for each team. It's more fair than a jump ball, and less arbitrary than the current alternating possession. And it actually fits what happens on the floor. After all, a tie up is not as effective as an outright steal, but but deserves something more than just stopping the play. This way,every other time you tie up a team, it's a change of possession - effectively a "steal".

Flopping = tech (and should be monitored carefully, without stopping the game, unless it's the last 2 minutes of the game)

DI sports should count towards some credit...instead of taking those unnecessary ******* classes we always have to take outside of our major.
