It's just about here. It's been discussed at length since before baseball Spring Training. @crusader_of_90 is like a kid on Christmas Eve today πŸ˜‚. Here is my position breakdown and prediction.

QB- Advantage heavy on ESL. Shanklin is returning with a lot of success behind him, while MC wasn't sure who their guy would be until a few weeks ago. Ryder Startz, the younger brother of MC 2023 All State LB Parker Startz, is very athletic and a dual threat QB who has talent but not the experience.

RB- Advantage ESL. They have probably the best RB in the State who actually shared a lot of carries last year I'm told, but should get the bulk this year. Nate Samuels is an excellent RB for MC and heading to Lidenwood, he's also a great receiver out of the backfield, but he's up against a Giant in this category.

WR- Advantage MC. Another category where ESL also is always talented but Burrell and Thorton are Nationally Ranked and Sims is also returning. Add in new TE Ty Kennedy who was All Conference in Indiana last year and Startz has all the weapons he needs.

OL- Advantage ESL- MC loses 4 starters. Not great for a new QB. Dowling came in new last year with the entire line back and it helped. The one starter they do have back Chase Clark is outstanding and heading to Purdue and they have a giant Sophomore Piotr not going to butcher his last name but he is 6'7 300 and has Power 4 offers but gotta give the advance to ESL here.

Defense.....I'll save my time here, DL, LB and DB advantage MC and please know that I'm aware ESL has some great and a couple outstanding players but this is MC on defense
DL- Caleb Tucker, the Bone Crusher, 6'5 345 about 50 offers
DL- Jeremy Harris- 6'2 300 returning starter
DL-Emmanuel McMoore- 6'5 250 D1 Power 4 Offers
DE- Darin Graham- Wisconsin Commit
DE- London Owens- D1 recruit
LB- Roman Igwebuike- Notre Dame commit. 2025 All State, leading tackler on last years team. Nationally Ranked
DB- All 4 starters return from last year led by Michigan Commit, Nationally ranked, Taveras Harrington at Corner. Issac Saldana at the other CB who is committed to South Dakota State, and D1 recruit Brandon Rogers at Safety along with Cullen Winters.

Kicking- Hang on here....first time ever maybe in this category against any team? Advantage ESL!! They got a transfer in who is nationally ranked punter and can kick FG! I can't tell you anything about any kicker or punter on MC team although I hear both will be on the bus there tomorrow! πŸ˜‚.

Coaching- Even. Both have multiple rings and a great staff.

Prediction- Both are loaded. They match up really well. A post was made by @Cross Bones months ago titled "Will MC go undefeated" and I said if anyone can beat MC it will be ESL as it's our first game with a new QB behind a new line....and if anyone team has the DBs to hang with MCs Receivers it's ESL.....now they added a kicker who specializes in punting and that's huge with field position.....if MC punts more then twice I'll be stunned, they tend to go for it.....Ryder Startz has to take what the defense gives him and not try to prove to everyone that he is going to be just as good as the QBs before him and try to force anything......MJC is a beast at RB, he can control the game....him vs Roman Igwebuike and Caleb Tucker will be worth the price of admission....about 5 of MC's starters are 3 year starters so just a lot of experience and hoping leadership will bring this team together

Final Score- MC 34 ESL 24

Very good assessment, @McCaravan. I disagree with portions, and here are my thoughts.

DB and WRs ...
The line is where this game will be decided. For sure, the D-line favors MC. But ESL does not suck. They have some big boys - a couple of whom I will feature at the end, which is when the game will be decided by the kicker. As AnonX noted, the Flyers better be able to field the snap for XPs, FGs and Punts.

It is this unknown person who will be the game MVP.

My take: Flyers win 31-28. (MC 2/4 for 2Pts.)

I think that the Flyers have all they need to keep the MC Flyers grounded ... Floyd being ELITE. Forget stars- head-to-heads matter more.

Raheem Floyd (CB) 6-foot-2, 170 pounds. Camp Accolades: Earned Defensive MVP honors at The Opening Finals, dominating press-man coverage drills against national blue-chip wide receivers. Florida commit.

Jabarri Lofton (FS) 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. Mizzou commit. Camp Accolades: Stood out at the Under Armour Next Camp, where scouts noted his rare frame, massive wingspan, and deep-field coverage range for a safety.

Phillip White (SS/OLB) 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. Camp Accolades: Named a top linebacker/safety performer at the UA Next Camp in St. Louis, drawing high praise for his fluid lateral movement and downhill physical coverage during 1-on-1 periods.

Jayden Ellington (ATH/DB) 6-foot-0, 187 pounds.Camp Accolades: Clocked an elite 4.44-second laser-timed 40-yard dash during summer college camp circuits, cementing his projection as a high-speed secondary defender. Northern Iowa commit.

Frank Luckett IV (DB) 5-foot-9, 150 pounds.Camp Accolades: Recognized as a standout underclassman performer at local Prep Redzone Showcase camps, highlighted for his quick-twitch footwork and recovery speed in off-man coverage.

East Saint's Receivers are elite as well. While Gomiller has the bigger name coming in, Laron Baker Jr. is a burner who is now healthy. Laser timed at 4.37. The Flyers have SPEED!

Laron Baker Jr.: 4.37 seconds. He is a proven burner, clocking official times in the high 4.3s at Under Armour camps and running a blistering 10.8-second 100-meter dash on the track. He is committed to Kansas State. Rated a premier vertical threat at Under Armour Next regional testing, where his baseline acceleration and tracking capability on deep routes drew heavy attention from Power Four scouts before his pledge.

Ronnie Gomiller: 4.46 seconds. He recorded this time at the Under Armour Next camp, paired with additional reports of running consistently in the low-4.4 range during summer testing events. College Commitment: Cincinnati Bearcats. Camp Accolades: Named a top overall performer at the Under Armour Next St. Louis camp. Scouts flagged him for "electric playmaking" after dominating defensive backs in 1-on-1 agility drills, showcasing sudden burst out of his breaks.

Jahmori Ware: While he hasn't posted a laser-timed sub-4.4 mark yet on the major camp circuit due to being an underclassman, his agility and rapid burst give him elite game speed out of his breaks. College Commitment: Uncommitted (Class of 2028 sophomore holding early Power 4 offers from Iowa, Illinois, and Penn State). Named one of the five underclassmen wide receivers to "explode" at the UA Next St. Louis Camp. He earned heavy praise from Prep Redzone scouts for playing above his sophomore classification against older defensive backs.

The 2026 East St. Louis Flyers line rotation features the massive size, physical trenches, and high-major athletic testing typical of a powerhouse high school football program:

Mytrell Tillman (IOL)Class Year: Class of 2027. Size: 6-foot-3, 300 pounds. 40-Yard Dash: ~5.25 seconds .College Commitment: Grambling State Tigers (Hard Commit). Earned All-Camp honors during regional exposure showcases for his quick initial pass-set depth and functional anchor power against upperclassman bull-rushers.

Jerry Richmond (OT) Class Year: Class of 2027 Size: 6-foot-5, 290 pounds. 40-Yard Dash: ~5.18 seconds.Attracting heavy mid-major and MAC interest. Highlighted at the Prep Redzone Showcase for his exceptional arm extension and raw frame capacity to easily seal off outside edge rushers.

Defensive Line
Lonnie Johnson (DL/OL)Class Year: Class of 2027 Size: 6-foot-2, 310 pounds. 40-Yard Dash: ~5.30 seconds.Ranked as the No. 21 senior prospect in the area by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Super 30. A dominant, physical ironman player projected to split snaps across both lines of scrimmage.

Kingston Jones (EDGE) Class Year: Class of 2028 Size: 6-foot-3, 225 pounds.40-Yard Dash: 4.78 seconds. Securing early Power Four attention. Evaluated as an elite underclassman at the Under Armour Next Camp, drawing high scout feedback for his explosive first-step bend and closing acceleration.

I think this game comes down to officiating. Who are the stripes for this game? Is it a standard crew from the Bloomington area?

My concern is the speed of this game and whether the officials will be able to keep up or will penaties be called because a ref thought he saw something or will calls potentially be missed because a play happened too quick for the designated gigantic back judge that every IHSA game seems to have.

Pretty excited about this one. Think Ive done all the comment sections reading to get the real trash talk from both sides. Last night I learned that both teams would put BTA against IMG

ESL talent and speed is always amazing. Anyone who thinks it will be an upset is MC wins is foolish to think that. Will be great to watch.....I know their DBs with Lofton and Floyd will have the best ability to cover Burrell and Thorton. I think you will see a lot of quick passes and possibly dump offs to Samuels out of the backfield until Startz is comfortable. I wouldn't match the 5'9 150 guy up against the two of them though πŸ˜‚.

I’d give Lynch the coaching edge. Back in 2018 ESL was loaded with future NFL guys, while Lynch had maybe 3 college prospects and still made it work. He’s proven he can do more with less. Add his game IQ and in-game adjustments, and now he actually has more than enough weapons to work with.

Agreed. I trust his in game management better, sometimes if you go all gas, no brakes, you crash. With Sunketts Rings and Victories and coaching in games vs IMG, Bishop Gorman, Bergen, and others I thought this earned a Even. If I had to pick one for a big game I'd go Lynch.

My nephew is an assistant at De Smet. Says Gomiller is scary quick in space and probably the best high school football player he's seen since LB3. Pretty high praise!

I would take the Under on this total. MC a new OL and QB. Flyer probably runs a lot with RB, moves clock. MC defense looks great so he will earn his yards.

Chatter at the Diner counter this AM was about this game. No kicker has faced as much pressure to start a season as "the white kicker" at ESL.

In addition to him and the TE, I heard today that the Flyers' backup QB is white. Someone asked, light-skinned? Nope, real white. I so desperately wanted to ask if he was 1/16 or 1/32 ratioed, and do we need to put Pudd'nhead Wilson on the case? Decided not to do that have to give a lecture on Mark Twain.
