Alright,

Can we talk about Renardo Sidney?

As we all know, said basketball player attended State and despite valid promise the result was net negative for the program.

Let's put this aside for a moment.

Have you ever wondered what was the potential for Renardo as a basketball player.

So hell, I've watched the film - from high school to ha'i school - and even through all that -- it doesn't take strain-uous imagination to see this guy could've been a true beast. I'm talking about a Zion that's actually big.

I saw flashes of Magic and the touch of a Bird. A jumper like Durant and a post like a spirited baby giraffe.

It wasn't all pretty, but the question is about potential.

What was his ceiling?

Who knows what his ceiling was. He definitely showed flashes of being good. Problem is he was his own worst enemy.

First half of the Kentucky game his last year was the best half of basketball that I remember. Then, as usual, his conditioning caught up and.....everybody knows the rest.

With a frame like that, I'd say his ceiling is better than 900 lbs. Nooo Problem.

After listening to that tell all interview he did a year or so ago, it kind of confirmed that the NCAAs witch hunt against him got into his head, and unfortunately he couldn’t get past it. It was compounded by him listening to advice he didn’t really want to take instead of following his gut and going G-League / Europe. I think he might be in the NBA today had he gone that route instead of NCAA. Truthfully college isn’t for everyone, it was/is the best path to the NBA for most. But not for him.

It’s tough for a 19 year old who’s been touted since 8th grade as the next potential Shaq to be told this thing he’s been building to most of his life he can’t do because of details of something that happened when he was 14. I’m not saying he was wrong or the NCAA was wrong in what happened, but it’s definitely unfortunate no one could help him pull out of the tailspin, or he couldn’t pull himself out.

His ceiling was probably Dirk or Pau Gasol. His floor was Ryan Leaf. Couldn’t get off the floor. I’m surprised he didn’t even have a career in Europe, seems he could have just on size/raw talent alone. It’s a shame, I was really rooting for him.

I'm 5' 10". I'd have to duck to walk under his ceiling. Physical talent isn't everything.

Easily an nba all star talent

But the only drive he had was to the nearest McDonald's drive-thru. Exhibit A on how you can't make it on talent and potential alone.

I drank the kool aid back then and thought he would be all World, but a guy from LA with the ceiling he had ending up in Starkville Mississippi was a story that should have been obvious to end the way that it did. I don't care how many juicy jumbos we set him up with, he was a hard pass for the legit programs - they knew what was going to happen. Stans flew too close to the sun on that one.

Everyone drank the Kool Aide including his handlers and our coaching staff. I may be wrong but if you are gonna drink that kool side you better have the ability to motivate a 20 year old that has been told he is bulletproof. While Sydney struggled that is on his handlers and our coaches for not setting parameters. All were guilty in the fact that they were scared he would walk. No accountability because of a supreme talent. While Sydney underachieved I blame the adults who blew smoke up his *** for their own well being.
The funny thing is while they blew smoke up his *** they never realized the fire that would eventually would burn them all. Adults using a kid and they got burnt!
And Renardo had an opportunity but he was too lazy to change so all got what they deserved

His floor was quite a few floors below Leaf. That guy had a great college career and was drafted #2. Sidney wasn't in that solar system.

His issues were the only reason he ever came to MSU. He only came here after UCLA and USC refused to take him. He could’ve been a superstar, yes, but never at MSU. The writing was already on the wall by the time he got to us.

I’ll never forget a story my friend told me about Renardo Sidney. It was during basketball season, and my friend walked into a guy’s apartment to Sidney laying on a couch smoking weed. Sidney freaked out and wanted to fight my friend who he didn’t know but the apartment owner calmed him down. Complete waste of talent.

The flash of Magic was his weakness for indulgences. Not women, cheeseburgers.

Larry Birds ego and trash talking maybe

Durrant? Nah. More like Iverson and his views on practice.

He was lazy. And he made up for that with his poor decision making.

Renardo isn’t the first guy to have and throw away prolific talent, and he won’t be the last. But the reasons he didn’t make it are nobody’s fault but his own, and I have a hard time being sympathetic over it.

I’m sure stans would admit today that renardo was his biggest mistake of his entire coaching career.

The most interesting thing about Renardo is that he inexplicably spelled his own name wrong on his Twitter account.

Nope. Apparently, you forgot that he was born and raised in Jackson. Stans was recruiting him when he was 12. Issues didn't start till his 'family' moved him to LA. Think he was the 'only' McD AA Stans ever got at MSU.

To fool people, even years later, into believing he was much more than a waste of time.

Here's an idea....watch highlights of Magic, Bird and Zion again and if that tub of goo still reminds you of them, go check into rehab.

It's easy to get by on talent alone in high school, kids do it all the time, they're the best on their team and sometimes their town or state. Problem is when they take the next step up everybody was the best on their old high school team, town or state. If you don't get better at that point then you get left behind. Retardo was never more than an average player once he got to Starkville and that's on him because he didn't put in the time to get better

Mario Austin begs to 17'n differ.

But Bury definitely had some heartbreak trying to get the McD's to campus.

Does anyone know the story of why they moved to LA? Did some assistant coach from another team get his dad a job there to help a team land RS? Never heard the story on that deal...

Some of you guys are harsh and have selective memories.

Yes, in retrospect it was a poor decision to take RS. We took a chance and it backfired. The same people probably ***** about recruiting rankings.

For those saying USC wouldn’t take him, they COULDN’T take him, they were complicit with what was going on with him. He wasn’t a pass for everyone else, we recruited him and had long ties.

Further we only took him with assurance that he’d be cleared by the ncaa- which he eventually was. The issues had nothing to do with us.

Lastly, There are plenty of real jerks & criminals out there. RS might have been lazy and was no doubt used to being a star, but he never struck me as bad guy. He was obviously immature and clearly had poor guidance.

This is a case where the ncaa did this kid no favors by removing him from the game.

Stansbury had to take Renardo Sidney when he fell into our lap after the USC miscues. Sidney should have been on a 1 strike & your out program when he arrived to campus though, unfortunately he was given unlimited strikes and the result was the end of Rick Stansbury @ MSU. There are probably some credible reasons why Rick Stansbury could not/would not cut bait with Renardo Sidney primarily because if Sidney had talked Stansbury's career could have been over.

Agree up until last sentence. Speculation. Believe it or not stansbury was never busted for cheating. Nor did we ever sign a guy that was clear cut signed away from a big league program.

His ceiling was being a lottery pick and 15 year pro with some all star selections, if he ended up on the right team in the right situation to showcase his talent while the team succeeded on the floor.

He was a long way from that ceiling.

He didn't play at piney woods and his dad declared he wouldn't play HS basketball and instead only play aau.
That was all while living in Missippi.

Issues started long before moving to LA.

They moved to LA for a better future. More opportunity. Better chance to showcase(exploit) Renardo.

His dad didn't coach for a school out there. He was a 'consultant' for Reebok and ran the aau program Renardo was part of.

UCLA and USC backed off him. He was absolutely a pass for UCLA and it's well documented.
He came to MSU very late in the game because of a lack of good options.

I don't for a second think msu paid him to sign...if we did, it was dumb since it's not like Sidney had a lot of options.
His lack of options in recruiting was the west coast version of lance stephenson.

He had the physical potential to be an NBA all-star but he didn't have the mental toughness needed to play in a middle school rec league. Unfortunately it takes both physical skill and at least a modicum of mental abiltiy to be successful past HS.

The only way he got as far as he did was that he had enough sheer raw physical ability to allow him to contribute minmally despite being overweight, out of shape, lazy, and having a bad attitude.

Stans kept looking at the physical potential and let it blind him and allowed the other stuff to ruin the team.

He could have been a Top 5 pick. But if my aunt had balls she could be my uncle too..

What a waste of talent...
