While we have a very good baseball program I'm not sure LSU is a good comparison. They have won what 6 or 7 national championships? LSU is the best baseball job in the country.

Personally I don't think its a guarantee that we get a better coach than Cohen. Maybe we do but maybe we don't. I wouldn't be willing to take that chance unless Cohen has a repeat of this season next year.

Ole Miss is having a wildly underachieving post-Omaha hangover much like we had last season. I'm not sure what their prospects are for next season, but it's highly likely without Godwin as their hitting coach they have already hit the potential they have under Bianco. I can easily see Bianco being back on the hot seat up there and Godwin is the new McDonnell in the eyes of many of their fans. Anyone have thoughts on our chances of landing him before they get a shot if Polk III continues on course?

I'm not gonna offer much insight, but yeah, I believe we can. The fan support and money is there (well, CAN be), and it's not like MSU baseball is plagued as being a losing program. You can win at State and win big, and the rest of the country knows the program has potential. I don't see why we couldn't get practically any coach we wanted.

Unfortunately OM will take the series from us AGAIN this year and therein lies the problem. If State and OM are both not great and OM beats us again like they did last year then Cohen is the problem.

No doubt, as bad as they are, we'll be significant underdogs in that series. I have a feeling that by the time it rolls around nobody on either side will really give a damn though.

They are better than folks give them credit for.

Even at 14-14. Their RPI is 25. (vs our 130)

Their schedule has been brutal. Their SOS is 3 ( vs our 131)

They have had several WTF losses but I think 6 losses are to virtual top 10 teams.

As much as I hate it, their schedule now flips to their favor. They are 5-4 after today with 4/7 SEC series left at home and LSU and Florida out of the way.

I'll be shocked if they aren't solidly in a regional.

They are actually 4-5 in SEC play but otherwise, solid analysis. They aren't finding holes and winning games late like last season though (probably a bit of all of the above to attribute it to balancing of luck, loss of key players to protect hitters, and loss of Godwin). I won't fall out of my chair if they end up in a regional, but with their recent history in midweek games and looking at the improvement in many mid-tier SEC squads, just staying above .500 is going to be a struggle for them. Save for an umpire going nuts with the strike zone in game 2 of their series vs Arkansas, they probably get swept, and Arkansas isn't good.

The difference between Bianco and Cohen is that people are actually hiring his assistants to good head coaching jobs, and then he goes out and finds another good assistant. In 7 years, no one has hired any of Cohen's assistants for anything. That tells me Cohen hasn't done a good job of hiring assistant coaches.

Lane Burroughs was hired from state. He's not at a major program but he was hired away.

But I get your point. We need to pay up for someone. Obviously we need to keep butch but we need another big time assistant.

It says a lot that we were better offensively with an advertising executive on staff.

eta: Nevermind not the same Lane...

I stand corrected. Lane was a good assistant coach. We need more assistants like him. If we keep any of our assistants other than Butch Thompson next year, I'll be pissed.

Why does Butch get a pass on scrutiny? His staff is sitting at 14 of 14 teams in team ERA in conference games with 15 wild pitches and 17 hbp through 8 games

the offense is hitting .230 with Rea and Heck hitting .095 and .103

Our pitching numbers are pretty skewed by a few 8th inning disasters. We don't need to let butch go anywhere. He's one of the best pitching coaches in the country.

Our pitching has been the strength of our teams

under Cohen. Hitting has always been the weakness. If anything, Butch should be hired and Cohen let go. Cohen is really the hitting coach.

Because this is the only year the pitching has sucked since Cohen got the program turned around. Offense has been a major problem for a few years now.

Then tell me what that coach's plan should be, as far as recruiting and coaching.

Woody Hunt (winningest coach in NCAA) + Cliff Godwin as an assistant. Recruit more MS kids that will have a personal reason to win big (seems most of our kids are from Alabama). Bring in a real strength coach.

Yeah -- Godwin is totally going to be up for leaving his kush new head coaching gig at his almamater for what virtually amounts to his old position in the SEC...

Let's go get a NAIA coach in his upper 60's and then hire away Godwin from a head coaching to work under the old man.

You're a bigger idiot than I thought.

Yikes ..

Woody Hunt (winningest coach in NCAA)

Woody has been at Cumberland for over 36 years and the HC for 34 years. Anybody that knows anything about Woody or Cumberland, knows his next move will be into retirement.

Woody is no dummy and has the best gig in baseball. Cumberland, despite being a NAIA school, has better baseball facilities than 90% of Div 1 schools. Kids wanting to play NAIA flock there and he has 12 NAIA World Series appearances, one runner-up finish and three national titles.

Perhaps his greatest achievement lies in the facilities in which his team plays, practices and dresses. Cumberland has one of the finest baseball facilities in the nation, second to none in the NAIA, with Ernest L. Stockton Field and its 500 chairback seats and state-of-the-art press box. The Benton Jennings Indoor Hitting Complex provides year-round access to the Bulldog hitters and pitchers for workouts in inclement weather, and the Jeanette C. Rudy Clubhouse has 40 individual lockers as well as a lounge with a big-screen television, coaches offices and dressing areas and trophy cases.

I agree ..

Yes. I believe we can.

BUT, I'm just not ready for the 'turmoil' of changing baseball coaches .. at least not yet, by a long shot.

Hopefully, Cohen can turn this around before it 'degrades' into a Stansbury type cluster ****.

So, 'who' is gonna be the leader of this fire Cohen movement? .. ala Coach34 .. who successfully led the 'lynching' party ON this board for 3 years before finally getting his wish granted.

And, the prize .. Rick Ray and 3 long years of the crappiest basketball in MSU history.

Is there really a need to ask who is C34 of baseball?

No, not really ..

Is there really a need to ask who is C34 of baseball?

Just trying to interject some 'common sense' to let him know that even after all the ranting, raving and getting his wish granted .. the result was 3 years of division and fan apathy.

Sometimes even when you win an argument .. you lose.

We certainly can do better than Cohen.

It seems unlikely we will do better than him though. I'm not sure we could even do as good as him since we probably wouldn't be looked at as that desirable of a gig if we fired Cohen. I don't understand how it's even brought up as a topic of discussion until we finish the year without rebounding and Cohen refuses to make any changes in the off season. Cohen may be frustrating to some because he repeatedly does stuff that they think is counterproductive, but I have trouble faulting him for continuing to do what he has been doing considering the results it has gotten him.

Who? Who is a sure-fire better fit for Mississippi State? Paul Maneiri? Don't think so. Pat Casey? Roll of the dice. Brian O'Connor? He has only equaled Cohen's farthest run, and there are not even competitive without John Grisham. Tim Corbin? It took him 9 seasons to simply REACH Omaha. Not to mention NONE of those guys are leaving their positions to come to MSU. We inquired into Casey in 2008 and he would not take the job. We are not as great as you all think. Remember that we already had one coach leave us for Florida, with all the built-in advantages they have.

Not to mention that John Cohen cares more about Mississippi State baseball than any of us can imagine. His recruiting ties are endless. His reputation among the experts in the business is superb. Once again, once the 2016 season rolls around and beyond, there will not be ANYONE left doubting Cohen. Idiots simply do not possess patience I suppose.

If his recruiting ties are endless , how do you explain how talent poor this current team is. Let's call a spade a spade. This team is weak and talent poor. WE are at risk of being the worst team in the SEC. Look at the schedule , there are better teams left than who we have lost to already. In year 7 , this just might be Cohens worst team yet.

You completely missed my point. My point is there is a hire out there that we could make who would be better than Cohen. It's highly unlikely we could identify the guy. You can't easily identify coaches that will do as well as Cohen, much less better. I do think we are a program where if Cohen left, we could go out and get as close to a sure thing as you can get without poaching a national championship coach. But I'm not sure that would still be true if we actually fired Cohen after the run he has had.

This team of recruits was elite on paper. More elite than previous MSU teams under Cohen -- but this team lacks the mental toughness that made the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Cohen teams pretty special in my eyes.

Seems Lane Burroughs trusted his eyes -- and Mingione trusted Kendall Rogers and the other guys in Atlanta. Who could blame him when he had never been on the road recruiting before? He hadn't been staking out HS baseball games and talking to MS coaches and building those relationships for the past 20 years like Lane had. Hence why he was unqualified for the position then -- and is still unqualified now IMO. Yes, I realize that the hire -- and who we sign -- ultimately falls on Cohen. Yes, I realize it's "Cohen's offense". Just like it was always "Dan's offense". But I can still want the best possible guy in that position and ***** about Koenning, while things seemingly get alot better after he departs. We settled on Mingione when we should have been out searching for a Godwin or a McDonnell... JMO

Recruiting on paper isn't worth the paper it's written on. We've either done a very poor job evaluating players or a very poor job developing them. And I know we've got another "elite" class coming in next year, but the team that has 5 SEC signees on it (3 of them ours) somehow managed to lose 12 games last season and has already lost 7 this year. I'm hoping this isn't another class of overhyped players.

The draft will tell the story on the next class. But it's currently 94-level elite IMO. We've got to quit losing every one of our signed power hitters to MLB. The two we lost last year hurt us badly this year. Particularly Vallot with the Collins injury. The guy we signed from Colorado is good as gone IMO -- and he's arguably the best power guy in the high school ranks right now...
