If he actually said that, he might have more issues than poor defense.
Well Willis said that. I'll find a quote. He basically said he gave up last year and didn't go like he should.

Dwayne , on the immediate possession before DW blew his defensive assignment you think Cal might have instructed Briscoe not to dribble thru two defenders ? My intent isn't to rag on Isiah , but to show all players screw it up occasionally . And some get the leash to play on , some don't . I understand stars get leeway , they should . But Cal's patience with Derrick seems to be somewhere between 0 and 0.5 % .

Dan, Cal was clear they worked on guarding the only shooter tight for three days...

I hate these type of threads because we all like DW.

I follow UK, but I follow my job more!

You act like you know Cal's job better than his, perhaps you should follow your own job even more or at least stop trying to be a coach when you admit you dont closely follow the program.

When you don't have a reasonable response, you are left with trying to put someone on the defensive by pulling out the usual tired "you have hated Cal since he got here." cry. You should be willing to discuss the issue with something of substance or simply shutup. You can cry "you hate Cal" until you turn blue in the face but it won't change what any fair minded person can obviously see. If Cal isn't going to play the non-five stars, he should not accept them on the team.
Your views are just awful. Ignorance comes from being uninformed about a subject. Which you obviously are.

Hawkins played over 20mins against U of L and scored 13 points. Harrellson and Liggins played major minutes and were key players for the '11 FF team. Darius Miller was maybe the most key player for the '12 team not named Davis.
Jarrod Polson played a ton of minutes at UK. If you're gonna make statements, at least try to be truthful instead of just having an agenda.

Okay, but Briscoe makes up for that in many of other areas. What are you not getting about +/-? Briscoe's strengths and contributions to the team are far greater than his weaknesses, so his +'s are always greater than his -'s. You really can't same the same for Willis. He's even at best.

Don't waste your time trying to explain yourself. If you don't follow the herd, they will attempt to run over you. Just grow thicker skin and continue posting your thoughts. It only bothers them because your post is accurate and some feel to acknowledge that means Cal is less than perfect.

Has nothing to do with perfection with Cal.

Fact: Willis plays for Cal

Fact: Cal demands that defense is a pre-req for playing time.

Inescapable conclusion: Willis will improve defense or Willis will get no more playing time.

This really isn't difficult.

I agree with this. But for him to earn that time, he must defend better and hit the boards.

Yes Willis needs to work harder as does the entire team. This team is more likely to lose games because of poor free throw shooting than anything that Willis is or isn't doing because he isn't on the floor long enough to make a difference. Just thinking, I am blown away that some of these guys could reach five star status while not being able to toss a ball into the ocean with one foot in the water.

DM -- I was an offensive minded player and relate and appreciate more to similar minded players , maybe that's why I like Derricks game so well... I'll trade ya 2 for 3 .. lol good night BBN . For a guy like me that likes offense its a challenge to love Isiah's game. Love his gritty toughness but he cant shoot a lick.

Cameron Mills wasn't the man, but UK sure benefited from his 3 point shooting. Based on your thinking, we would have no place for a Cameron Mills on this team because he would never be "the man."
You're wrong. You've been wrong this whole discussion and you know it. Folks like you are the 1% that spew agenda driven posts like yours that have no merit or truth. I sure pity the folks that have to listen to your factless opinions. Has to be excruciating.

I don't like one better than the other. I simply believe in using the total skill set of a team. There is a place for both on the team and it is the coach's job to determine how to get the best mix. When scoring is needed to force an opponent out of a zone, it would be very good to figure out a way to get scoring on the floor to bust open the zone even if it temporarily weakens the defense.

He's a 6'9" player that in his four years has shot 30%, 40%, 40% and 33% from three, which is very respectable for a player his size. He has taken the second most three pointers on the team (52), so that shot is a key part of his game. He stretches the floor and if you leave him open he is more than capable of making it. This year % wise (33%) he is Ole Miss' third best three point shooter behind Moody and Brooks, who both shoot 35%.

Ole Miss was changing defenses almost every trip down the floor so your strategy does not apply to this game.

They played a little 2-3 zone where a shooter is needed, but they played a lot more stretched out 1-3-1 and zone matchup along with man.

This game wasn't for the National Championship. Guys don't get better riding the bench. Only playing time will do that and this was a perfect game for Willis and Mulder to get more playing time.

Switching defenses???? What a novel idea!

I love the double standard that doesn't exist but I can hope it is intentional because it upsets fans who only want locals to play and that gives me great joy .

How many titles and FF's did that novel idea get Ole Miss this decade?

You were wrong in saying we needed to Willis to shoot us out of their zone tonight. They did not have a defense that could stop us.

I'm just curious, but which two players do you think should sit the bench to give Mulder and Willis playing time?

I didn't say we needed him to shoot them out of a zone tonight. However there will be plenty of times like against OSU that we will need him for that purpose. Games like tonight are good times for players like him to develop their games and to gain confidence. But hey, I am sure that you understood exactly what my point was but don't let that get in the way of your agenda.

We know exactly what Cal knows and wants. Unfortunately many of you don't listen to him or you try to restate what he means when he says things like putting 8 players into NBA was his goal and not winning an NC. That kind of thinking is the reason why little time is spent developing Willis into the shooter that he could be. Leveraging Willis' shooting might help win an NC but it won't get another body into the NBA. So, where is the priority? Is it winning an NC or getting 5 stars into the NBA?
I thought Willis was already a great shooter and that is the reason he NEEDS to play more. You are changing arguments to fit your agenda.

I don't even know how to respond to that. That statement is more more asinine than Cal doesn't care about championships.

I am certain that you don't know how to respond to that. Your are ok with highlighting Willis' weakness which is defense but you don't want to talk about free throw shooting. I wonder why?

Dwayne -- to be accurate Cal had a body at the table on the first possession after DW made the defensive mistake after only being in the game like 10 seconds .
He also had Matthews go to the table for Poy when he was out of position on defense (did not switch and gave up a layup). BUT pulled Matthews back when Poy hustled his *** of on the next play.
With Cal. you have to watch and SEE all the details.

How did you reach your conclusion about Briscoe's positives and negatives?
I watch the games. Seriously, if you can't see that Briscoe brings more good, positive contributions to the team than he does bad, negative then you just have it out for him and nothing I say will ever change your mind. For such a great basketball mind that you pretend to be, you can't just watch and see for yourself, or maybe even just look up some of those things he does well and compare them to things he doesn't do well? Seriously, judging strengths vs. weaknesses isn't that complicated.

He is the one of team's best perimeter defenders (if not the best), 3rd leading scorer, 3rd leading rebounder (and that's from the guard position), 2nd leading in assists, leading the team in steals, even though he's such a horrible shooter he has the 4th best fg% (because he gets to the basket for easy points), is the team's best driver in an offense that's geared towards driving the ball, and something that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, imo, he is a bulldog, the team's toughest, grittiest player, something this team needs a lot more of.

The things he doesn't excel are three point shooting, free throw shooting (can get in the gym on constantly work on both), and he turns it over a little more than he should (but he'll more than likely cut down on those in time when he's gets more used to the speed of the game, stops pressing and allows the game to come to him). So, like I said, his positive contributions to this team are far greater than his negatives. If you can't see that, then I don't know what to tell you.

You readily admit you dont follow the program regularly yet you know more than our HOF coach.

Read your post history regarding Cal, there is a pattern, that is an agenda.

If you believe this, why did you state that Cal should be spending more time developing DW's shooting?

This may come as a surprise to you but all players including NBA players continue developing their shooting. Most adults that know the game would realize this. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that I was posting to an adult. My bad!
