Cal is smart! It resulted in a new UK contract. You have to appear serious to get what you want at UK. He did & he got what he wanted.

Lol at some of you that do not understand & really think Cal was going to leave.

KSR seems to be trying to follow the classic successful athlete’s model. Have success and make money. Open restaurant. Talk out both sides of mouth or say/do something crazy and lose support. Bankruptcy is the usual next step followers by the occasional tv appearance as a commentator. Tick tock.

[laughing]

Must have ticked off one of those fake accounts too...

So since we all agree the story is nothing, let's talk about this thread title.

Cal wanted UCLA? Where? They asked him what he wanted, he told them, they were in the process of meeting it, and he signed an extension with Kentucky. If he wanted UCLA, why isn't he there?

I'd love to hear your editorial explanation, @Calsthebomb

Cal: "I will take the job when hell freezes over and the sun doesn't rise"
UCLA: "Let us see what we can do"
UCLA: "Sorry, we are not going to be able to accommodate those requirements"
Media: "UCLA and Calipari had negotiated terms for which he would accept the job"

Good point. Cal wanted to heard from UCLA would be a more accurate title.

Yes but I think it’s a little greedy on his part if it was only about money. I mean the guy makes 9 million a year. How much does one really need? Not really fair to compare the average working American with Cal.
How much does one really need? That doesn’t matter. It’s what the market is willing to pay you. He should get every penny he can like anyone else.

He played them, plain and simple. I work that game every day for others in professional sports. He had nothing to lose by taking a meeting and then discussing. No big deal.

As a New York Giants fan I would compare this to Gettleman claiming that "2 or 3 teams would have taken Daniel Jones before the Giants second 1st Round Pick". UCLA just trying to save face. Cal used and abused them, then leveraging UK for more money. The lifetime contract was just icing on the cake. Well played by Cal and an expected but still sad attempt by UCLA to try and make people believe they are still one of the most desired coaching spots in the country.

Why wouldn't you negotiate and see how far they are willing to go? Obviously we'd all rather he didn't even talk to anyone. He didn't go. No big deal. People are going to blow this way out of proportion though.

Let's just say that if Cal doesn't make a FF in the next 3-4 years, that will be a 7-8 year drought. Knowing BBN, they will start to question and will add significant more pressure on Cal. He's just keeping his options in his back pocket and I can't blame him.

If Cal had passed the opportunity to goose UK a little bit and get extra money, I would have been a little disappointed in him. That was easy money for him.

Matt Jones would be a low life court-appointed attorney right now if he didn't have a UK fan base to ***** off of.

Wow. It's amazing how people hate on someone successful. A lot about Jones bugs the hell out of me. I fast-forward through everything on his Hey Kentucky show that isn't UK basketball related. But come on. The guy went to Duke law school, and is building a tremendously successful career. I really just do not understand the massive hate he gets. A few jabs here and there, sure, but......

I always thought Cronin had a "little man syndrome" before going to UCLA. I wouldn't be surprised if was "doing a Daffy Duck" while reading the article like UCLA wanted him more than Calipari.

If he was seriously considering leaving UK because UCLA was willing to pay him a lil more then I don't think that speaks very highly of his character. I mean he will never be able to spend all of his money anyway. I guess loyalty doesn't go very far with most people nowadays. And before people say well he left Memphis for UK that is not a fair comparison. Memphis is a mid major and not a blue blood.

UCLA wasn't offering anywhere near what he's making at Kentucky. He was never going to take the UCLA job. They were just the most realistic negotiating tool he could use to get a better contract here.

I’ve been around Cronin many a time, and can assure you he’s everything you would think he is.

The big issue here that everyone seems to casually ignore is the time frame. Cal was negotiating with UCLA when he was supposed to be giving his total concentration on winning tournament games for us. This pisses me off. Say what you want. Explain it off anyway you want. In my mind he gets no free pass on this. We lost on Sunday and his lifetime contract was announced on Monday which means he had been talking with UCLA during the tournament.

Is this really news. I’m sure Cal loves UK but if UCLA offered double everything he’d be a fool not to think hard about it and wouldn’t surprise if he accepted if that was the case. No different than the rest of us. I’m sure many love living in UK if they grew up there and want to stay there forever but if California offered you double what you make and would pay for moving, your house, etc you'd also be a fool not to consider and potentially take it
Double his salary in Cali isn't a raise. California is a money sucking hoe. Taxes and such are ridiculous..

We have a UL troll here posing as a UK fan. Look at his post history.

People leave their jobs everyday for a different opportunity. It’s not about loyalty. It’s about doing what you think is best for you and your family. He was never seriously going to consider leaving UK, but as an astute businessman, he was listening to other options. Like anyone else would in a multitude of professions.

I believe that story is false. One of Cal's goals is to win more NC games at Kentucky than UCLA has. I think he will stay long enough to do just that. Whatever the price of a coach is, Cal will be paid the highest, and he is worth it.

Cal shot down the rumors on March 20th. When did we play in the NCAA tournament?

Yes. Cal was personally on the phone negotiating with UCLA while coaching us in a game. Don't ask for proof, look it up yourself. /sarc

I see the mods noticed our friend uk_born_b_bread already.

Hagans is gone, don’t get your hopes up. He has said since last spring that the point of coming here early was to get into the 2019 NBA draft. He gone.

How do they keep landing these guys? Why can't Cal get us some more?

247 sports disagrees with ya. Every crystal ball pick on Boston is for Duke, unfortunately. They are in very good with a lot of the top 2020 guys, per reports, but were not on good with the 2019 guys. They are going to get a very good class - hopefully we do too.

Kid is widely considered a Duke lock, like Scottie Barnes.

Duke is hard after him too.
