"When that three went in and it tied the game, I probably should have called a time-out. It entered my mind, but they got that son-of-a-b in so quick, I couldn’t get to anybody to do it. But I needed to stop that right there. Someone said, well, what happened? I said, I don’t know, and I probably will never know because I won’t watch this tape, and I never watch the last tape of the season. Watched enough tapes all year. Watched a thousand tapes. I’m not watching a thousand and one."

Tough time to get a TO but Cal did not try. Don't know what he means. This is Calipari 101. He does not utilize timeouts wisely and never has. He lets leads slip away without so much as a word. Will never understand it.
That has always been a mystery to me as well. If someone does understand I would appreciate it if they would enlighten me.

They did throw it in so quick, that's the thing i was impressed with more than the shot. Immediately out of the bottom of the net and go. Experience.

I thought Cal did a really good job with timeouts all season.

That said, I'm more disappointed he didn't call a timeout sooner during UNC's decisive 12-0 run.

After 2 straight trips without a basket he should have called one. He waited until we were down 7 with under 2 minutes left. Ball game.

Mystery about his time out philosophy? Watch the pre game presser. He explains it in great detail after the players leave. Basically it's take 3 timeouts home with him.

There actually is no right answer.

The key importance is for coach to remain the same throughout the year with similar message. Having players clearly understanding what needs to happen for that kind of situation.

To be honest, the last possession...(I don't like talking about it but...)

Everything was going great, until nameless person left big white UNC player, and got behind Fox...who was guarding Pinson. Who btw, is a terrible scorer. Basically everything looked pretty good.

That one tiny slip up cost us the game, and the player left UNC player who isn't exactly a baller. It's like Humphries of UNC. So losing them might not sound that terrible if you said it before the game.

With a time out called, you are talking about Justin Jackson or Joel Berry with the ball. Not sure how that's a better situation.

Sometimes just because the result didn't go the right way doesn't mean it wasn't the correct decision.

If before that shot I told you who would you rather have shooting for UNC.........Berry, Jackson, or Luke Maye I think everyone would have said Maye lol
Yeah, the guy had 16 3's all year and 2 yesterday.

I wouldn't ask for that. All you're going to get is crap excuses or talking points. Cal has blown some big time games not settling down the team and he obviously doesn't believe in momentum.
he has won some also. Like you said... that is him. He has shown some change in coaching this season. (IMO). That is part of being more than good, adapting and realizing your own mistakes.

They did throw it in quickly, as they were trying to get the ball up the court before our defense was set. One of our players should have slapped the ball into the third row like the other teams do.

He also had 2 or 3 against us last game, I watched them in their last two games in the Tournament and he didn't hit like that, of course.

Idk, UNC seemed like they scored coming out of every timeout. They drew up good stuff coming out of the breaks.

I won't rewatch it either but I was wanting a timeout when we were on offense where Fox threw it away trying to go to Bam maybe? there at the end. That whole possession just screamed timeout.

That's kind of an odd thing to say...of all tapes to watch this would seem like the one...

Guys even in the last 2-3 minutes we had several good looks from Willis wide open 3 and Monk with the best look he had all night from 3 and we missed both. We missed some good looks and UNC hit some tough shots. Inconsistent whistles against us is what cost us the game.

Why?

What can Cal honestly use from this game he doesn't already know going forward? He's more than likely going to have a completely different team next season and thus must learn to play differently.

Cal has always said he doesn't take a timeout in that situation. He will fall on the sword for his guys. But some of you guys go ahead and push the swordd in deeper. How many of you would have coached and kept us in the game in the first half when our stars and starters were on the bench? He coached a hell of a game and some of us just want to pizz and moan. of course a couple in this thread have been waiting to cry about Cal

That is something UNCheat fans have been bitching about Roy too forever. Both coaches have pretty good resumes, so I think I'll side with them on this issue.

The idea that anyone was thinking to call a timeout there is crazy. You just had a miraculous three go in, you think you have enough self awareness to not be phased by what just happened, to call a timeout within one second of the ball going through the hoop?

I like Willis but he effed up and he knows it. He was running around and completely decided to double down on Pinson and left his man, having no effect on anyone but just allowing an open shot (which he still managed to travel). I'd love to have seen what the shot would have been if Willis would have stayed where he was supposed to. Just re-watched it, probably an off-balanced shot fading to his left.

I really don't think he even had a chance to call a timeout. Either way, I think no timeout was the right call.

To me, you never call timeout when you have superior players. You let them perform. It got us this time. But how many times have we prevailed in the final seconds?

Yep. Willis totally got lost in the moment. Briscoe tried to help but was too late.

Pelphrey-esque moment there for Willis.

Yep. Would have just been a warning. You can't call a technical there unless it happens twice but like I said, no one is thinking of doing that in that moment. Your mind is probably going, "YES! He made it. Got to get back on D" while trying to find a guy to pick up.

That one is worse than 1992 for what could have been.

You gotta call a timeout when UNC cut the lead to 1 with 4 mins to go and put your half court set zone offense in.

His teams are so young he has to coach this every step of the way. He's paid well to do it and his young men are great and work hard but he has to guide them every step of the way. His X and O's are the best, so he should use it more.

yeah that was a great set they ran when they came out of the time out and stared at each other until one of their worst players went 1 on 1 at the end of the shot clock

i liked the under play when they didn't get in, too

Just another way of saying, I got caught up in the moment just like any other fan of UK cause let's face it that five second call quick turn around and three was unbelievable. Absolutely stunning and I became a fanitic then a coach in that moment.

I won't go back and watch but remember them on 2 if not 3 times scoring on set pieces with backdoors as we doubled down on the post.

I've been critical of Coach Cal and some of his decisions from the past..but not this time. I thought he coached a masterful game vs. UCLA and a great game vs. UNC. Higgins screwed us..plain and simple. Maye traveled right in front of a ref just seconds before he hit the "game winning shot"...Willis left Maye wide open but regardless, Maye still traveled and it wasn't called..none of that is Coach Cal's fault. Coach Cal is a great Coach.

Yeah. You wanna blame a loss on Cal? Then use WVU and 2015 Wisconsin but I have no complains about anything he did in this tournament.
