I've seen coaches do it both ways.

In Cals defense, he should be able to reasonably expect each player to find their man and stay on him since its, oh, the most important 7 seconds of the game.
Unfortunately Willis decided to run to the lane area & guard no one. Reminded me of Pel standing like a statue while the ball the air for 75 feet & watching the past play like he had a ticket vs. Duke.

It's comical that the clowns on here think they know more about coaching than our HOF coach.

If you were in the position Cal was, you be pissing all over yourselves. It's easy to make calls from your recliner. SMH
I didn't want to do this but I went back and watched from the point we were up 5 to the end. What I saw tells me plain and simple why we lost the game. We had two or three open shots we would normally make and missed them. Humprey and Fox were two of them. Caroline made two huge shots, both difficult. One from Pinson and the other Jackson. Ball game. If we hit a few during that 5 minute stretch we win.

Everything turned when Hump missed that little jumper on the baseline. He forced it a little because he had been hitting those, but the moment was just a little too big for him.

From that point it was Wisconsin all over again - multiple empty possessions for us while they hit hard shots, we couldn't get a defensive stop. from up 5 to down 7 in what seemed like a blink of an eye. 12-0 run. Ballgame...but wait,it wasn't - we made a nearly miraculous comeback.

Like Cal said - last team with the ball was going to win that game.

Guys... I know there has been tremendous debate about whether Cal should have called a TO after Monk's last 3 pointer to tie the game, and I think there are good arguments on either side.

However if I understand correctly the recent rule changes regarding coaches calling timeouts from the bench, I think it might have been virtually impossible to actually get a timeout called in that situation, and attempting to do so might have actually made it easier for UNC to get the ball up the floor for a game winning basket.

According to the rule changes that went in to effect prior to this season, coaches can't call timeouts from the bench in live ball situations. The only time a coach can call a timeout from the bench is during inbounds plays, but only when it is HIS team inbounding the ball. So if I understand coorrectly, Cal wasn't allowed to call a timeout himself while UNC was inbounding the ball anyway.

In the perhaps 1 second time lapse from when Monk hit his shot and UNC took it out of the net and inbounded it, Cal would have to had to get the attention of one of the players on the court and get them to call a timeout. Given the chaos of the moment and how quickly UNC inbounded the ball, getting that timeout called would have have been nearly impossible in my opinion. And, attempting to do so might have further distracted our guys from matching up and playing defense down the court attempting to prevent UNC's last second attempt.

Just my opinion...

A TO in the 12-0 run made more sense. A TO after our made 3, that can go either way. You then give UNC time to setup a play. There's definitely some cause to let them try and score with 7 seconds left, after Kentucky just hit a HUGE 3 pointer.

Maybe not the best call, but oh well.

Aside from not having a TO in the 12-0 run, I thought Cal did a great job. And I think he's gotten better since his arrival at Kentucky with many areas.

Coaches aren't done growing and progressing just because they turned 50..

It's also possible that one of the players could have had the wherewithal to take it upon himself to call the TO.

Yes, imagine if Cal gets a timeout there and UNC runs a great set play and scores? People would be saying we shouldn't have called a TO there.

The UNC dude traveled before the shot, but it wasn't called. What can you do?

UNC lost a heartbreaker last year.. and their ties with ESPN and the NCAA.. we weren't going to win that game if we had 100 timeouts or zero. It's horrific.. because there's nothing you can do. Just hope someone knocks them off and relish in the fact guys like Roy and K and Self and Emmert.. are one year closer to dyi.. er.. retirement.. You choose the verbiage.

People would have lost their marbles if they would have scored after a timeout. Bank on that. I remember people being bothered that Tubby called timeout vs Duke in 1998 after the free throw made it a two point game with a few seconds left and when Duke had no timeouts. Luckily it worked out but if it didn't, oh man.
