I get the feeling Bruce instructed his intern to peruse our message board and write a quick 15 minute article for him.

100% this. We should throw out random ridiculous names just to see which columnist is scanning the boards.

(clears throat)

Maybe Rich Rodriguez would come here. My source says he’s interested.
2 reasons I think there is some truth to the targets. 1) Bruce Feldman is the go to guy on college football news. He's well connected and whoever he talked to probably knew who Trev has put feelers out to. 2) Trev said when he fired Scott. "We aren't trying to win the press conference." He wants a grinder that is going to outwork everyone (or at least work as hard as other B1G coaches). It's likely not gonna be a big name splash hire. People saying Urban Meyer aren't being serious.

Unfortunately, he is trying to keep Urban away. Boosters are pushing their weight, but Trev doesn’t want Urban.
Boosters pushed their weight easily enough to keep Frost and his antics for another year (and dooming this season), but when it comes to hiring a 2-time national champion coach, now Trev decides to stand his ground? If true, not impressed.

Fair points. Thanks for the breakdown.

I look at it slightly differently. If the timing was right, he would have fired Frosty. But I don't think he had his network in place to line up his coach behind the scenes.

We all remember the Steve Pederson debacle. He whiffed on several coaches before making a desperation hire in Callahan.

Trev won some points in giving frost a lifeline. Now that this charade is behind us, he has the time and freedom to get to work. Plus, we aren't competing with very many good openings this year, whereas last year it was brutal.

Arguably Callahan was the best coach we had in the last 20 years. He just needed a DC (which very easily could have been Bo).

I do agree, if Urb is on the table and Trev is looking elsewhere, eventually it will come out and a decent chunk of the fanbase will hate him for it.

I have major concerns with Bill. Had trouble being a GM on the NFL level. Well in college you are the GM he has to make talent evaluations.

Man, I hope you’re right. If Trev made the decision to retain Frost without booster influence, then everything you’ve said fits. No question that this is the better year to be in the market for a coach, at the very least.

It’s going to be a long couple months, and the bye week makes it seem even longer.

Its not the same, a bona fide NFL coach to some degree will have top high school recruits fawning over them in a way that an NFL free agent never will. I don't believe Bill Callahan is a particularly spectacular person from a recruiting standpoint, but he was super organized, had NFL bona fides, and basically went around the country looking for recruits who fit the generic NFL 'chart' for desirable draft characteristics. He didn't have to think much when he was using the metrics every other major coach on earth was using.

That made him closer to a computer than a good ole boy who could find a five tool player in some backwater and lure him in with his charm.

That is an interesting point I had not considered.

Obrien is the worst name on that list.
He’s going to be fired by alabama after this year. A fired coordinator? At alabama, under saban, when all he has to do is run the offense? How’s he going to do with out athletes when he’s busy with other aspects of the program. No frickin way.
His players routinely hate him.
Obrien would be a terrible hire.

Wheres aranda and fickell?
I'd probably go for fickle over Aranda. Aranda was handed keys. Fickle been through the ropes

Top 3
Bill O'Brien Bama OC
Matt Campbell ISU HC
Lance Leipold KU HC

Other candidates
Chris Klieman KSU HC
Jake Dickert Wazzu HC
Jamey Chadwell CCU HC
Bronco Mendenhall former UVA HC
Matt Rhule Panthers HC
Gary Patterson UT special assistant
Jim Leonhard Wisconsin DC
Mickey Joseph NU interim HC

Personally, I'm hoping for Leipold. I think he's the guy. Would be good with Rhule or Patterson. I could stomach O'Brien. Would be disappointed by any of the others. Noticed Urb wasn't on the list.
Bronco Mendenhall = Mike Riley What has he ever done to even be on this list? He had some success at BYU but was 36-38 his last stop at UVA. That was a weird move too. Coug fans and players seem to like Dickert. He is another Wisconsin native like Leipold. Leipold, Patterson, Leonhard, Klieman, Dickert and I guess Rhule would be my choices.

I don’t want Bill. I didn’t like him at Penn State. He was 10-6 in conference play there. He had talent. I am not positive, but I think most of the players stayed with the school after Joe was forced out. Leaving after only 2 years, I know it was the NFL, has me question his commitment to a school, too.

You don’t know what you are talking about regarding the impact of the 2012 sanctions against Penn State. 15 players transferred out when the sanctions were announced, including 2011 leading rusher Silas Redd.
BOB inherited a mess and did a darn good job the two years he was there.

Agreed the list needs Aranda and Fickell in the mix.

None of them seem like guaranteed winners given the state of our program, but I think several names on the list would at least give us a shot.

In no order, put me in the corner for:

Fickell
Aranda
Leipold
OBrien (despite the hate)

Assuming Urbs is off the table.

Twitter poll currently at almost 87% that want him to leave. BoB sucks.

I don't think it's BoB's fault necessarily. Alabama doesn't have the horses at WR this year that they've had in years past, which quickly makes an unstoppable offense rather average even with a returning Heisman at QB.

All would be an improvement over crotch rot

Aside from Leopold:

From that list, I'm intrigued by Leonhard. Would fix the defense and seems like a grinder and tough-minded. Not sure if he can recruit. I know he hasn't been a HC yet, but some guys are ready to make that leap.

BoB: I imagine he would be a great recruiter, but I just have the feeling he is more of an NFL guy. Maybe I had too much purple drank and I'm not with it.

While I think Campbell would bring discipline and toughness, I'm not so sure he would be able to recruit better talent here, "just because he has resources".

We need a major infusion of talent and better player development. The recent NFL drafts don't lie. With the recruiting rankings they have had in recent years, the obvious answer is the need for better player development.

I'm a bit bummed Mark Stoops isn't on that list. But what do I know (besides jack ****). I was among those that thought crotch rot would get this thing turned around in 3-4 years.

Aranda is going to be the head coach at Nebraska. I have a theory that it's already in the works. Mickey is staying and is Aranda's front man right now. Making changes to have some of the culture problems solved, new practice habits that Aranda demands installed, dead weight & unhappy players gone, unhappy coaches dismissed, media trained to short presssers, limited access. All things that Aranda demands.

The purging is already started so the transition is smoother. You will see at least two more assistants gone before year-end, and Davison removed from any connection to the football program. May see Duvall jettisoned also.

I think they are also sleeping on Tom Herman. His name is not mentioned enough and we wouldn't have to pay another school. Not my first choice, but I think he is worth a look. He learned from Urban, and is probably a more realistic hire.
The guy who couldn’t win at Texas with all their talent, money and resources?

If Alberts knew what he was doing...if he's in-charge and doing what's best for Nebraska...why did he give Frost a free $7.5M ?

Is that good management?

IF you are going to hire Leonard, you just as well hire Mickey. Better recruiter, and we can go get a D Coordinator.

So dumb. He has a record as a program builder and winner everywhere he goes. We need a rebuild, once again. He can get this culture fixed.

Any good coach would bring a winning culture. It’s not exclusive to Lance. We don’t need a rebuild, we have the players. They just need better coaching, structure, and discipline.

This idea that PSU was under some amazing insane undoable sanctions is just a myth.

It went from

Maybe never having a program again, to
No program for a few years
to, only walk ons
to, huge reduction in scholarships

Turns out they just paid a big fine and lost 10 scholarships a year for two years? I think that even got changed and no bowl games for a few years.

Yes, some dudes transferred, I think 1 or 2 decent guys.

Fickle would be a mistake. Look at how he did at OSU, NU's only victory over OSU was with fickle. AAC coaches don't do well outside the aac. Frost, Herman, Taggert, Norvell etc haven't done well outside of the aac.
