I could be mistaken, but I think Jax not getting a bye helps him for seeding at nationals gaining an extra match. May not matter at this point.
If the extra match got him to 15 matches that would be true. That would allow him to reach 15 matches and earn an RPI. But since he only has 9 matches currently he will not reach 15 even after the Big 12 tournament.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there a reason why the highest seeds are not the ones that are granted BYEs when appropriate? Why would a 5-seed deserve a BYE over a higher seeded person? Surely the wrestler named "BYE" is weaker than an actual opponent...

I don’t really know but I’d guess it’s because it could kind of put the best team at a disadvantage in the team score if they had a bunch of high seeds on byes in the first round?

But you lose the advancement points for that match which in a close tournament could cost you a championship. If we got 9 first round byes, that costs us a minimum of 9 team points and a maximum of 27 if all 9 were pins. I would hate to lose the team title because we got 9 first round byes.
Well the counter to that is reward the point. The seeding is an earned thing, so maybe the point too? Like I said, I had no idea why the byes were the way they were.

Do you award 1, 1.5, 2 or 3 points for each bye? All 4 are in play for every match. If you just give 1, is it fair to assume no #1 or #2 seed would have not scored bonus points? There is no truly fair way when team scores are in play. They have come up with a system that attempts to be as fair as possible and the coaches agree on.

I vaguely remember mizzou’s first year in the tournament and they had 7-8 guys wrestle pigtails. All of their wrestlers advanced and many had bonus points. OSU only had 2-3 wrestle in pigtails with one getting bonus. Mizzou was ahead of us by 10+ points going into the quarterfinals. We were not going to beat mizzou that year but it seemed like they got a big head start on the field that year.

Which is counterintuitive.

If you earned the one seed, you deserve the bye.

if you have a bye, and win your second match, you still get the advancement point from the bye round. What you give up is the chance to earn bonus points. That really cost us the year we tied with that other school a couple of years ago.
