I recently visited Mackinac island and discovered that it really is “as easy as riding a bike”.

I’m almost 50 and hadn’t rode a bike since I was in my teens. It was good exercise and therapeutic. I’m looking for new hobbies at my age. Please recommend a bike. I don’t want to spend a ton of money. I am just starting to research. One friend told me not to get a mountain bike. I will mainly be riding on sidewalks in a rural area or bike paths.

Edit: Concrete bike paths at a large park.

I would recommend a cruiser/commuter type bike if that is all you are riding. What ever bike you feel comfortable on. Go test ride a bunch and you will know when you ride it. The last thing you want to do is buy a bike that is not comfortable because you won't ride it. Something like this one where you sit more upright so your weight is not distributed to your arms/hands on the handle bars. I would suggest going to your local bike shop and talk to them about what you want. Visit several because each bike shop seems to cater to different types of riders.1777062230401.png

If you’re in LA son 1 will build you a perfect bike. He logged 5k miles last year.

Is it flat or are there hills?

I have a cheap fixed gear bike down the shore. I love it. Great for a flat island. It was $75 at Walmart. It is about $120 now.

In Philly burbs I have a mountain bike. I ride trails but not all paved and some hills. Pennypack, Schuylkill river trail, forbidden drive.

Anyone ever do Ragbrai?

My mountain bike is actually John Bolaris' old Trek. He was down the shore and at the end of the summer he could not fit the bike and a 18 yr old blond in his porche. The bike got left behind.

Great selection TBUglies,
Senior citizens need a ball crushing woman in the sack, kitchen table, coffee table, office, not a ball busting steel crossbar on a bike 😣
The tires look like they would manage the miles of dirt roads around the family homestead.

Does it attract Latvian bombshells that want you to buy them caviar and champagne?

If you are based in Michigan, where (I can recommend some shops).
Look at a Specialized or Trek hybrid.
You can literally spend $300 or $6000 for what you want
