Saquon's Parting Jab at Big Ten Powerhouse Rutgers (and Maryland)

Recently, the newly drafted Saquon Barkley appeared on NY sports radio, doing an interview with a local radio host (and erstwhile voice of Buttgers football). Naturally, the host was giving Saquon some grief about decommiting from rutger. Why, he asked, would you do such a thing?

Like usual, Saquon began his response in a gracious manner, thanking Rutgers for offering him on potential alone--basically on solely JV film. But according to Saquon, the offer from Penn State was simply too much to pass on (although perhaps not for the reason you'd think). Take a look:

"The reason why I left, no disrespect to Rutgers University, being a PA guy living and raised in Pennsylvania that Penn State’s longevity was going to help me," Barkley said. "I wasn’t just looking at the NFL. I predicted and hoped to be in this situation, but say if it didn’t go that way, I felt like a degree from Penn State University separated myself if I went to, say, a school like Rutgers or a school like Maryland. It’s no offense to those schools at all, but it’s just two different schools. Penn State is a well-known, prestigious school. At that young age, I made a very tough but educated decision."

Masterful troll job, Saquon, Masterful. He could have made the easy argument that we have more football history, etc. BUT, he did two things that were far better. First, he reminded the NYC media market that PSU is better academically, and second, he perpetuated the hilarious conflation of Marygers--while also throwing Maryland (who may or may not have even recruited him--I can't recall) under the bus for basically no reason at all.

Saquon is a treasure to us Nittany Lions, and I look forward to hearing and seeing more of him for years to come.

I think ultmately Barkley made the right decision for himself, but simply repeating what he must have been told by James Franklin and others shows that he's 21 years old, and like most 21 year olds, he's proud of his college. I've heard Rutgers players say similar things if they felt they had a positive experience in college.

Chris Carlin isn't calling Rutgers football on the radio anymore? Or does this illiterate Penn State Putz simply not know the meaning of "erstwhile"?

Repping a school that hid a child molester for 3 decades certainly doesn't faze him. I wonder if he's seen Paterno yet?

I think he was trolling Carlin as opposed to trolling Rutgers. But who knows.

PSU and Rutgers degrees are not materially different from one another.

Throwing Maryland into his comments was kind of funny, though.

I feel for the older alumni but would never hire someone who went there after what happened to those children. I just shows poor judgement and support for an organization that placed athletics over the welfare of children .

As a Giants fan, I'm sad to have read that as it appears he is truly stupid. Also shows the legitimate power of the PSU cult that people around the school and program are that brainwashed. PSU is truly a school for tryhard dweebs and wannabes.

I guess we just learned that Saquon doesn't know how to do research on various schools. If he did, he wouldn't have shown such total ignorance by his statement.

So do you apply the same standard to any Catholic who continues to attend the Catholic church?

I think Penn State is ranked higher than RU, but anybody who’s met a substantial number of PSU grads know that they are basically doing the same things as RU grads. We’re not talking RU vs Northwestern here. So stupid comment by Saquan, but clearly he bought into the hype.

Shouldn't have brought academics into it. It had nothing to do with that and he knows it. Just say they have a better football program and Rutgers had Flood and move on. That's the reason. Stop trying to act like you went there to get an education. It's not like he graduated.

Sounds like he was trying to give an answer that preserved the football side of things. Eg it wasn’t about Ru football but the degree. Don’t think it was malicious but obvi he could’ve made that point more articulately (not a word)

After spending enough time around buttheads, some wind up talking out of their @$$
Seems the case with Barkley.
I won't wish injury on him, but hope he plays like Curtis Enis ( minus Enis' first season) or
Ki-Jana Carter ( after his injury).
But would be happiest if Blair Thomas winds up being considered a better pick after Saquon
proves to be the biggest bust of all Nit RB draft choices.

Can we stop sucking his butt now? It's always driven me crazy that we should give him credit for leaving us in a lurch and "understand" why he did it.

Agreed. Guy is a jackass. His “reasoning” clearly isn’t based on any credible reason

As an Eagles fan, Saquon better get to know his new daddy, Fletcher Cox, real quick. Because he will be seeing him often in the backfield.
