having an offense with 2 or 3 big guys on the floor at the same time that can’t shoot will win you games won’t it?
After Cals 1st 6 years at a D1 school, he was 129-64. Not much disparity.
There was some pretty strong buzz back then he got a little extra to go to bama. The same staff that recruited Collin sexton Also recruited him. So yeah I’d say it’s unlikely petty didn’t get some kind of impermissible benefits. I don’t think Cal ever back off of him either. We just weren’t gonna do for him what bama was. It is what it is though.
in hindsight the kid made a pretty good decision. And he never would have been here long enough to be the player he is for bama now. So it’s not like it matters anyways

Going out of your way this thread to discredit anything to do with oats. The same coach who mopped the floor with our current staff very recently. Alabama looking like a well oiled machine of late but our 10 million dollar man still trying to figure out who should start.
I just love that Oats is willing to adapt to the modern game. He would be on my short list of ideal candidates whenever our next opening is.
Not true. Major contributors Primos, Quinnerly, and Bruner are all Oats guys. Signed a good class last year and is bordering on a top 5 class this year with Charles Bediako supposedly having Bama in the lead. Missed on 5 star Nimira Burnett last year but the kid has already opted out at Tx Tech and is rumored to be looking hard at Bama again. I know all of that means next to nothing if Oats can't coach them up but this is not the same Bama team that lost to WKU and Stanford. Oats all but told Petty to pack his **** and leave after the WKU game which resulted in Petty not even dressing against their next opponent. I watched these seniors struggle under Avery Johnson and last year under Oats but now they are playing out of their minds. They aren't getting lucky and they aren't backdooring any wins. They are beating people up, and trust me that is all Nate Oats. Oats may very well be a poser but If he can get Bama to the tournament every year he can set up shop in Ttown forever. I ain't too good for a 6 seed.
I don’t really care what they ” do in the tournament”. They play a fast entertaining and stimulating style of basketball that is fun to watch. The guys offense IS similar to wh@t Rick ran and our fans loved it. Much rather watch Bama play right now that the absolute shite of an offense we play.

Also easier to play loose when your offense if not based on running sets with a lot of useless cuts arms passes and instead just uses spacing & letting guys use their own ball skills t create movevent & flow. Just a more simple and free way to play & works as long as they kee making shots, but also easier to make shots when you are loose so that helps too.

But he was 16-15 last year at Bama. He’s a legend.

It doesn't matter if it is Oats players or not. Bama was never known as a three point shooting team under A Johnson. He took what he had molded to his style.

Why trash a coach that’s obviously doing a good job this season because Cals getting criticized this year? That was his first year at Alabama. Coach Cal’s first year at Umass they had a record of 10-15. Did that make him a bad coach? Before it’s even brought up, I can agree with anyone that Oats has to have more success to have a resume good enough to coach a blue blood program.
Where was he supposed to win big? He built buffalo and left for Bama and he’s been there for 2 years now. He’s only been coaching for 10ish years at this level total; he was in high school basketball a decade ago.
Fact is he’s been a program builder but hasn’t stayed once built to plateau (ya know, how rapidly climbing the ranks works). He has a sharp upward trajectory. Whoever hires him is banking on a bigger platform allowing him to take the next step based on trajectory. It’s medium risk, high reward.
Oats is one of the guys I’d be willing to take a chance on. Mark Pope is another.

Nate oats lost 58 games in his first 5 seasons as a college basketball coach with 4 seasons at Buffalo and last year at bama. Cal lost 57 games his first five seasons all at UMASS. The cal worship on this board to the point you are disparaging a coach in his 6th college season at his 2nd stop and tearing up and leading the SEC is disgusting,
