Yes, your thoughts on the conference

Well, for the life of me, I have no clue what-so-ever who wins the east. Ohio State is great, but Michigan's defense is outrageous & I would guess JH knows full well a win over the Buckeyes is desperately needed. PSU has a truly sensational qb, MSU has boatloads of returning starters....it's over my head who wins that vicious division. Rutgers, Maryland & Indiana....God help them.

Wisconsin will have a superb OLine and they know full well how to use it. They're easily my pick for the west division.

I love my kool-aid and I see NU as #2 in the west. Freshmen qbs or not, difficult schedule or not, Gebbia & especially AM have excellent potential. Maybe just dreaming, but I'm hoping our Oline "and" Dline can and will make major improvements. That's so essential. We've got some big TEs that could help too.

It sure looks like we've got some animals at inside lbs. Maybe our 3 or 4 Dlinemen can come through too. Maybe some decent depth. Oh, this is going to be fun.

Iowa as #3, Purdue #4, Gophers #5, NW as #6 and Illinois....get a new HC.

East
  • Michigan State 11-1 (8-1): Michigan State returns the most production of any team in college football. They are quietly hanging back in the shadows while everyone talks about Ohio State and Michigan, just as they prefer. Nineteen starters and the 2nd best QB in the league return.
  • Michigan 10-2 (7-2): Their defense is enough to get them past Notre Dame early and Jim Harbaugh finally beats Ohio State.
  • Ohio State 10-2 (7-2): Seems like a shocker, but Ohio State will struggle at times on offense, (struggle being a relative term) and they are weaker than usual at LB. Having two losses shows just how strong the East is this season.
  • Penn State 10-2 (7-2): Very tough to pick. I have them winning ten but could easily see them dropping another, but they will win at least nine barring a collapse. Defense will be a worry but the offense should win some shoot outs.
  • Maryland 6-6, (3-6): A tough team to gauge, inconsistent but they have play makers on both sides of the ball. The east is just too tough, however. I picked 'em over Texas again just for *****.
  • Indiana 3-9, (1-8): They will turn the ball over and other teams will score at will compared to last season's defensive improvements.
  • Rutgers 4-8, (1-8): They could beat Indiana or Maryland for a fifth win, but won't be a factor.
West
  • Wisconsin 11-1 (8-1): If their defense comes along, especially the secondary, they could go undefeated. If they lose more than 1 in the regular season it won't be because of their offense.
  • Iowa 8-4 (6-3): Their offense will be pretty good, the defense will come along later in the year. I could see them perhaps dropping 1 more in conference but not more.
  • Nebraska 7-5 (4-5): The two biggest games on the schedule are Northwestern and Iowa. Win both and Nebraska will end with 8 wins instead of 7, and it would mean they could be good enough for 9. There is a reason publications are playing it safe both ways and picking Nebraska to go 6-6; when you factor in last year's 4 wins despite better-than-4-win talent, a whole new staff but one that's an improvement and a top new staff in the nation, and the difficult schedule, it's just crazy. Nebraska is literally the toughest team to predict for in all of college football.
  • Minnesota 7-5 (4-5): They will be improved enough to win a few more games this season. As much as Fleck bugs us, he seems to motivate his players. Big pre-conference game against Fresno I have them winning but they could easily lose.
  • Purdue 4-8, (3-6): Huge opening week game against Northwestern, and I have Purdue winning. However, Purdue will struggle down the stretch. A tough schedule and defense was hit hard with graduation.
  • Northwestern 5-7, (3-6): A trendy pick with a lot of people, but I just don't see it. QB has injury problems and they never live up to the hype after big seasons. Of all the teams here, however, this is the one I could be most wrong about. They could win anywhere from 5-9.
  • Illinois 2-10, (0-9): Lovie Smith's final season.

Love your predictions...up until the conf championship game...but then again I’m a Spartan. Biggest concern is the OLine. They’ll need better push running the ball to reach their goals. BTW I think you’ll have to give someone another conf win to balance everything out. Right now I have it 62-64.

Good predictions. Who will give OSU their one loss?

BTW...you’re short a couple of wins. You have the conf at 61-65.

Trace mcsorley fan i presume?

Not necessarily, although he is a big factor. It is just that 4 of their 5 toughest games are at home, Franklin is a very good coach, and the timing of the games against Ohio St, coming off a game at Illinois, then Michigan St, coming off a bye week, set up the schedule to have momentum going into the end of the season. That is where they have the 3 game stretch with Iowa, at Michigan and Wisconsin. I think they win 2 of those 3 with the lone loss at Michigan.

Actually, I think the timing of the Ohio State game actually hurts Penn State. They only return 3 starters on defense. And the strength of their defense the last two season was the secondary where they lost something like 70+ combined starts. I know they've recruited well, and I also know Ohio State will have a new QB in Haskins. But IMO, Penn State will not be prepared defensively to keep up with the Buckeyes. And McSorely and company have actually never really had very good luck moving the football vs. that defense.

Their schedule is easy af. They will play only two ranked teams all season, and they get Wisconsin in Kinnick, under the lights.

I also think Stanley is one of the league's most underrated players.

And, Wisconsin lost so much defensive experience. Bryson Williams is going to start. I know Bryson is a good player, and I wish he had picked the Huskers, but Bryson would be 3rd string at best in Lincoln for 2018.

I think people need to pump the brakes a bit on the Badgers.

Here are the facts; Iowa loses 13 or 14 players who started last year, their 2 leading rushers, 3 players on the offensive line, and the best of the bunch in the left tackle, starting center and one guard. On a defense that gave up on average 4.2ish yards per rush, they lost 2 starting DT's, all three linebackers and 2 out of 4 players in the back end.

I am just not sure that screams 11-1, even with a schedule that is easy AF. But we shall see

Very interesting. Thank you for your reply!

Makes sense that Wisconsin's defense might be a notch or two down. But their OLine should be brutal I would think. Iowa's schedule does help them a lot. It'll be fun to watch!

I feel like you say this every year. Yet, even with their low ranked recruiting classes Wisconsin just reloads. Until proven otherwise there is no reason to believe they wont be the same Wisconsin we have seen since joining the conference.

I never mentioned their recruiting class, and I think you have memories of fantasy.

Wisconsin always just reloads due to experience. But this year is a bit of a rarity for them. They replace 8 multiple year starters on defense who combined for more than 240 career starts. You can't tell me a Freshmen from Lincoln Southeast is going to play at the same level as a 23 year-old with 20+ career starts.

This is all very, very interesting info. That kind of softens the blow a little bit, considering our schedule is really beastly.

Also, lets resist the urge to think of our West opponents as always being the same. If Iowa is replacing a crap-ton of starters, and Wisconsin is on defense, that does have an effect. Wisconsin with Russell Wilson vs. Wisconsin, say, last year, are not the same animal. It's safe to bet that they'll have a good O-line and a really competent defense, because they seem to develop both well, but their offense has always been in a range between meh serviceable and pretty good, save 1 or 2 standout years.

Iowa, too, has years where they are very all-around solid, and years where they are pretty pathetic. I think these posts on returning starters help color the picture and make it a little less black and white when it comes to our schedule this year.

That was cute.

Iowa has the best QB in the division.
Iowa's running backs are excellent. Toren Young will be a 1200 yard rusher.
They have the best tight end in the conference, and a likely 2nd rounder draft pick.
Alaric Jackson is the league's most talented Offensive Tackle, and regardless of what people think of Ferentz, his offensive lines are always among the best coached in the country.

Their defensive line is as good as its been in years, and will be as good as the D-lines at Michigan and Ohio State. Linebackers will definitely make some mistakes.

But you have to consider the absence of potency on their schedules. Nebraska will likely be the 2nd most talented offense Iowa sees all year, and that will be in week 12, when inexperience no longer exists.

So they reload even though they are a historic 7-8 win team, and will replace every starter from last year with a better player and will improve their record by 3 1/2 games. I’ll belive it when I see it

Look at the schedule man. The spots where they lose people of significance at LB and CB, won't be challenged much at all.

And keep in mind they have 8 to 10 future NFL draft picks starting:

Noah Fant - TE
Alaric Jackson - LT
Tristan Wirfs - RT
Nathan Stanley - QB

DE- Anthony Nelson
DE - Parker Hesse
DE - AJ Espenesa
DT - Cedric Lattimore
SS - Amani Hooker

We can only hope the whole team continues to get popped for DUI.

I like and completely agree with what you said about Nebraska. They may very well be the most difficult team in the country to predict.
Totally agree. I don't think we have a clue as to what our offense is capable of. I'm kind of concerned about the D, especially the secondary, but if the offense is strong as I expect it to be, they should rise up. We'll see.

Oh boy, that's the truth. I slam down some kool-aid and see us getting 8 or 9 wins with a terrific offense. But of course.....it's really just a blind guess. An Oline who can't block anybody, a freshman qb, a defense that stops nobody, a junk-yard dog schedule....oh Gawd.....a Beaver based four win team might very well take a little more time.

But never-the-less, that kool-aid tastes great!!

They usually start slow and ISU will expose their LBs and secondary, imo. ISU has a great back, good qb and big receivers.

Noah Fant - TE
Alaric Jackson - LT
Tristan Wirfs - RT
Nathan Stanley - QB

DE- Anthony Nelson
DE - Parker Hesse
DE - AJ Espenesa
DT - Cedric Lattimore
SS - Amani Hooker

We can only hope the whole team continues to get popped for DUI.
Our number 2 TE is going to be drafted as well. I disagree on Lattimore, I dont see much out of him so far.

I changed my mind on the East division.

I'm going with Michigan St. They won 10 games last year and have an amazing 20 returning starters. Wow! They also play Michigan & Ohio St at home. Dantonio is a damn fine HC too.

It looks like their road danger is only PSU and Nebraska.

1. Michigan St
2. Ohio St
3. Michigan
4. PSU

I think people are overrating Michigan St. They squeaked by some crappy teams last year that made their record look better than it was and got destroyed in their losses. They also went 3-9 two years ago. I think they overachieved last year and will have more like a 6-6 or 7-5 record this year. I think it will be either Michigan or Ohio State's year in the East. I think PSU will drop off just a little bit after losing Barkley.

In your "facts" you stated Iowa lost its 2 starting DTs yet you list only 1 DT. Where is the other starter lost? Also "best of the bunch" LT??

13,11,12,3 and 10. Which one of those numbers don’t belong? Those are the number of MSU wins the last 5 seasons. MSU has been really good when it’s got good QB play (Cousins, Cook) and Lewerke is good.

My mistake. Those glaring mistakes are obviously the difference between a typical 7-8 win Iowa team and an 11 win Iowa team. Thank you for clearing that up.
