Anybody got a bead on a good family lunch spot in the City Market area? By "family", I mean fairly informal, some good base menu options, but alcohol still available. Dinner suggestions welcome too, if different.

Here are a couple

Lunch:

-Pizza: D'Allesandro's
-SNOB is good as mentioned above (High Cotton is better- same owners)
-Cru Café
-39 Rue de Jean (French style- best burger in CH)
-Basil (amazing Thai)
-Butcher and Bee (really good artisan sammiches)
-If feeling adventurous, go up East bay a bit from the market to The Tattooed Moose for the duck club sammich

Go have drinks/view at one of the rooftop bars: The Vendue Inn and the Market Street Pavillion are both great

Enjoy your visit! I lived there back in culinary school days and am moving back out this summer

There are so many good restaurants here you really can't go wrong. Some other good spots downtown that have a good atmosphere and good food are:

Fuel
Brown Dog Deli
Coast
Hominy Grill
Grill 225 (Rooftop bar & restaurant)
Vendue (Rooftop bar & restaurant)

If you feel the need to leave downtown you should go check out any of the restaurants at either Shem Creek or Sullivan's island.

Enjoy!

Some other great spots are popping up on Upper King St. as well. There are some tried and true places downtown that you can get your typical Lowcountry fare, but there a ton of new places opening that are really quality.

Everybody has some great suggestions, and here's a few other examples:
Oysters: Hank's, Pearlz or The Darling.
Beer: Craftsman
Upper scale: Hall's Chophouse (one of the owners went to State (Billy Hall)) - awesome bar (food) menu.
Shem Creek: Red's, Tavern & Table, or Shelter (stay away from RB's) - Best happy hour on shem creek is Water's Edge at the dockside bar only.

People are right, it's hard to go wrong. There's so much competition that they're either good or they go away. (Or they are a chain for tourists)

To answer your direct question: Walk to Husk.

Enjoy the city!

Thanks for asking this question...

I've got a nephew about to attend college there and was wondering the same as I'd likely pay a visit or two sometime in next few years.

Poogan's Porch is awesome although I will admit that its been 20 years since I visited Charleston.
