This is the right coach people. He's smart, passionate and completely driven to succeed. He will lead us into the top 25 consistently, mark my words. But it will be a process. It won't happen in 1 season, but nonetheless you will see positive changes immediately. Give him 2 years to build a solid team, and within 3 we'll be ranked and in the top half of our division.

Based on what, his press conference? Look I think he'll be a good coach but where is everyone pulling these expectations from

His attitude, disposition, intelligence as a public speaker, history of success, and reputation.

And that's for starters.

Leave it to our fanbase to not understand how to evaluate a winner.
The way I evaluate a winner is based on if they win or lose as the HC, which we will see. Leave it to our fanbase to deem winners on how they talk in a press conference and attitude. you must like Franklin too

Something about him is very inspirational. This, in a nutshell, was floods major shortcoming. Flood would speak, and I would cringe. I often complained that floods schollie offer letter read more like a cover letter to my insurance agent than a football recruiting letter.

With ash, I hear him in those youtube interviews and his press conference and I want to run through a brick wall. He is an inspirational figure. It's not hard to see. We all see it. Just like we all saw flood the dud. And if we all see that so easily, so will recruits and media and assistant coaches. Ash is a good man, to be sure, but we will not be hanging our hat on that fact, like we did with flood. Ash is driven, focused, inspiring, pays great attention to detail. He is a football psychopath, it's a mental disorder which afflicts only the best coaches out there.

I am so confident about this hire due to these easy to see qualities.

I hope he is successful but really no one knows whether he will be or not. He may project well based on his progression as an assistant and his personality to recruit but this is a big jump into a situation with challenges. We need to stop comparing him to flood as to why he will be successful. Set the bar higher!

Ash said we need "positive energy" at RUTGERS, and we all need to do our part to help the program.

The Negative Nancy's and alarmists on this board are amazing.

Did you not watch the press conference?
Did you not hear all the lamenting from tOSU fanbase that we have hired their best coach (sans Meyer?)
Did you not hear all the accolades from tOSU fans and national respected media as to how good of a coach Ash is?

Sure he hasn't done it as a head coach.
But everyone has to get that first gig somewhere.

Of all the guys hired this year, which would you have preferred?

Richt? He is a much better fit in the south and is a Miami alum, so it is a great fit where he is at and would not be as much up here (hey, no one else got him, either)

Who else had a better resume and recos?
Who else would have been a slam dunk?

We didn't swing and miss and then see that guy go somewhere else. By all accounts, we got the guy we wanted.

Did you not hear the comments from our new AD that this is the best interview he has ever conducted in 25 years? Don't you think that is because Ash has all the positive qualities he is looking for in a person?
Ash has been preparing for a head coaching job ever since he got into coaching 19 years ago.

Let's support Ash and promote his excellent qualities and stop pumping the brakes and being a doubting Thomas.

We need to help create the "positive energy" coach Ash is talking about. And that includes in discussions with friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, football fans, and yes, even on message boards! We need to get more people on board and rooting for RUTGERS, and willing to give us another look and a chance to earn their respect and eye when they watch college football.

Please stop with the "Schiano is going to make it so hard for RU we are screwed BS." It is a loser's mentality.

RUTGERS needs winners, and needs to change the culture across the board, and that includes a fully supportive fanbase.

Hey Rutgers Fans! Buckeye here.
I really believe you got a good one with Coach Ash. When he first came to OSU after the 2013 season, he talked about the same things he has since taking the Rutgers job.........changing the attitude, philosophy, and culture.
The change in the OSU defense was apparent by the 2014 spring game. The kids started playing with an intensity and heart we hadn't seen in quite a while. He took the worst OSU defense we had seen in years and turned it into one of the best in the country in short order.
Rutgers has exactly the type of players Coach Ash likes to work with.......they might not have the most recruiting stars,or be household names around the country,( I expect that to change also ) but they play with a lot of heart and fire. Give him time, and many Buckeye fans feel you will be quite happy with the hire.Myself and many Buckeye fans cheer for you guys 51 weeks a year. Good luck with the 2016 season!

True dat. Seriously, being a fan of Rutgers athletics should be all about support. I wish every person that views the glass as half empty, would seriously try to change their negative thought patterns. Living life in a positive, upbeat way is a great way to spend your time on this planet. I am very thankful for what life has given me, including the friends that I enjoy Rutgers Football with. I can't wait to see the success that the Ash regime is going to give us. He is a winner.

We see what Ash is capable of with top notch talent. Great D and won national championship with it.

The ceiling is high for him and bodes well for us if he translates energy and passion I to recruiting wins where he gets the talent he had.

Biggest question is who will be bring in on staff, and can he get results with our current players?

Time will tell, but this much is certain I am way more confident in Ash and unknown staff than with HCKF and his staff for next few years.

The praise that his been heaped on this guy, by national championship and Rose Bowl winning head coaches, along with many others from around the nation, has been nothing short of fantastic. Then take a look at what he's accomplished with his defenses and recruiting wise, on his stops, and combine all that with what he's had to say so far and, IMHO, he's literally the complete opposite from the last "new" head coach we had, who almost destroyed this program. No, it doesn't assure us of anything, but it can give you a pretty good feeling about the direction of this program, in his hands, right now.

I would think he can get us ranked in 3. Go 8-4 regular season and it's very possible with our schedules.

Now this I do disagree with... So if we won against TTFP last year and were 8-4, we'd finished ranked? Because that schedule was harder than future schedules, and that was a Flood coached team, so 8-4 won't get us ranked... 9-3 maybe but that's tough for Ash, seeing as it would require a huge improvement with current players, or he'd have to stay here long enough to recruit and develop his own class (4-5 years)

Have we forgotten that Bill Walsh recommended Terry Shea or that Joe Paterno recommended Dick Anderson? So far there are some good signs and vibes with Ash, but I'm still going to adopt a wait and see attitude with this hire.

Considering there still a hole in our schedule, other than the FCS game, and there are way too many other assumptions to make about a season three years out from now, there's no way one can say that eight and four at the end of the season wouldn't have us ranked, IMHO. We can also be ranked at points-in-time during the season, right?

We probably would have been ranked last year at 8-4 (Top 22-25). At 9 wins, we are a virtual lock for a ranking imo.

8-4 without the blow out losses and maybe we're ranked. 9-3 without the blow out losses and we would have been ranked.

IMO if Ash stays here 5 years he'll get at least 1 top 25 finish.

This an old post that was resurrected.

BTW it does reference the press conference which I have mentioned in the past....people back then were quite happy with him and saying he's out of central casting etc.....now he sucks so he's got no personality etc....

I thought his personality was normal then nothing special and normal now nothing terrible either. My suggestion is don't get caught up in the hoopla of press conferences and slogans etc...It's all crap..the results are all that count and that you only find out with time..

He wasn't on my list at all but I was okay with him and frankly the person who resurrected this thread sounds like he was too just a little more feet on the ground than others. My thing is if the resume is worthy of an opportunity I'm okay with a hire even if not someone I would prefer or on my pretend AD list.

No one can know for sure how a hire can work out and frankly it's easier to say someone will be bad and be right then say someone will be good and be right. The probability of not working out is likely higher than doing well.

I never thought he came off well. Starting w his demeanor and then the way he talked about RU and our traditions.

All that optimism. Ash had the fanbase from the start. He just blew it.
No he didn’t. We saw real issues during his first year. He waffled on offensive philosophy, hired terrible unqualified assistants, put some our best players in his doghouse and got the living crap beat out of him almost every week. He set all time records in futility losing 78-0 while hosting the recruiting event of the year at home on national television. Many of us knew and said then that he was a disaster and doomed to fail.

Man this thread is hard to go back and read .. like painful. How naive we all were
Not naive I think fans just get caught up in hoopla etc..and that's normal we're fans afterall. It's instinctual to want to hope and believe as much as it is to rain down when it's bad.

Unless we're hiring Saban I'm generally a feet on the ground person I don't get overly excited or low. Was okay with the Ash hire because of resume but wasn't excited. Didn't like the DM/Kill hires but tried to be hopeful rather than thinking this is going to be crap that it did end up being.

Fans are going to be fans in general (it is short for "fanatic" right) and that's just the way it is. I'm a fan but not a fanatic but many fans are fanatics so what...

You may have I don't remember everyone's posts but I know the general feeling was this guy is awesome etc...he's from central casting...Me I don't give a freak about any of it...I only look at resume and if it's worthy of an opportunity...if so I"m okay with even if not someone I would have chosen.
