Exactly. Size has nothing to do with it. It's all about drive, athleticism, natural instincts and ability, so long as you're relatively close in size.
The problem is the Blackshirts have a hard time find these guys in the front 7. Not even to the level of Lavonte David, Suh, and Randy Gregory. Even guys like Jared Crick, Pierre Allen, Eric Martin, Zaire Anderson and Will Compton would be a breath of fresh air to watch out there again. The current defense just can't move that quickly.

You can not tell me that Mo Barry's lack of size isn't a problem for him in stopping the run. Go watch some of the video again from the OSU game.

Add Chinander to the list of coaches who need to go. I may have him ahead of a couple on the list above to be sent packing!

Interesting. If I were to line up all the starters on both sides and had to say who is better than last year, who has regressed, who has stayed the same, etc. I'd have to say the defensive players win that battle this year.

I'd have to totally agree with you. Last year we'd give up endless opponent 3rd & longs........over & over & over all year long. Of course they're not even remotely great but they're better than last year.

Farniok struggled last year. Jaimes has been dealing witih a nagging injury most of the year. Wilson? He started the last half of the year and did okay. I don't think he's any better or worse than ok this year. Center there's a drop off with a freshman there for now. Hixson vs Foster there's a drop off. RB and WR there's an obvious drop off after losing Devine and Stan. Depends a little on what you call Wandale. MW just did not show up to play this year. QB? AM's hurt and has dealt with bad snaps and overall poor line play. I think it's obvious that Darrion Daniels makes us better in the middle BUT losing Gifford hurt at OLB. I just don't know how one makes a blanket comparison at this stage of the game. Remember, we WERE 0-6 to start the year last year.

I'll ask again - what exactly would make Farniok a quality guard?
He struggles in space. Zatechka has said that he believes he's too heavy and slow. I'm not sure that makes him better at guard given what Frost wants from his guards. I remember all too well even on some of Tom's best teams there would always be ONE guy who was a little weaker in the O line that would sometimes miss blocks and he would get mercilessly pilloried at the water holes after every game. Dan Villi Waldrop comes to mind but I'm sure he played for Frank. Tom had his guys too.

I agree with you. That's why I don't understand why If-we-could-just-move-Farniok-to-guard is such a popular slogan. The fact that a guy sucks at tackle doesn't mean he would suddenly be the best O-lineman on the team if he moved to guard.

Lavante David was smaller than Barry in college. Lack of size didn't seem to hinder him. My point is we shouldn't focus on the size aspect. Yes, size has to be in the same ballbark, but we need to look at speed, athleticism and natural ability. Get more guys in the door that look like Caleb Tannor.

Two points. Listed weights are not necessarily actual weights. According to Dr. Rob Zatechka those weights are not accurate. Wilson, Hixson, and are all smaller than listed while Farniok is heavier. IMO Jaimes is lighter than listed too. Point 2, Iowa has it's own O line struggles this year.
If the numbers aren’t correct, nobody knows then.

Lavonte David was NOT a 3-4 inside linebacker in college. Mo Barry is. BIG difference.

Zatechka is a former NFL O linemen AND he's an MD who has been on the field during practice. I trust his judgement. The one time I was on the sideline for warmups it was obvious to me that Farniok is a very large human being and that Wilson is not for a guard. It also appeared to me that Jaimes is lighter than advertised. I've not seen Hixson up close lately so all I can do is trust somebody who's a bright guy and has a reason to be good at judging weight. I've listened to MULTIPLE former players state that they weren't anywhere near what their listed weight was when they played. It might be what they weighed when they started camp but by the time they got to conference play they were 30 lbs lighter. Some guys have trouble taking it off while others have trouble keeping it on.

I think he would be better at guard probably than tackle but I don't think he would be an upgrade over Wilson. Hixson? Maybe

What don't you understand? Do you think Zatechka was just making crap up on the radio the other day? Players are weighed at some point in late summer for the press guide and roster. Do you really believe guys weighing north of 270 stay the same weight the whole season? Cmon man. You're smarter than that.

Frost recruits speed, and possibly at the expense of everything else.

This is why we are undersized.. it's like the only thing that matters is speed.

So you're saying he can tell how much anyone weighs by looking at them? Does he work at the circus guessing people's weight? Someone compared A to B to prove a point, you said, oh, you can't use the criteria listed (weight) to compare A to B. Ok, so then we can't compare. Oh yeah we can, so and so guessed their weight. OHHHHHHHHHHHHH KAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

When you've played the O line at a high level I can guarantee you that you can accurately judge what a lineman weighs. I can also guarantee you that a Dr. can pretty accurately guess your weight.Winking It isn't that tough.

Ok, lets get a scale and some lineman. I'll wager he can't guess their weight within 2 pounds, each one he gets wrong you pay $100?

What do you do for a living and why are you being so obnoxious? What part of media guides being printed long before the season don't you understand? Answer my question. Do you think that players stay the same weight as is listed before the season starts? IF you had any medical training you would understand that ALL DAY long MDs see patients that are weighed before the Dr. sees them. All day, every day MDs look at people with their weight listed on their chart right at the top. You would have to be an idiot to not get good at estimating weight.

My bad, I didn't know he was a team Dr. and sees their weight every day. So yeah, you're right, even if the listed weights say our OL is the same size as Iowa, its not.

"Do you think that players stay the same weight as is listed before the season starts?" Nope.

Given that, the numbers listed can be used to compare the offensive lines then? You said they couldn't be used, I'm confused.

Didn't you see last week and the anti-Wisconsin threads? They lost a game that they shouldn't have, so they now suck.

I'm obviously joking.....I'm in full agreement with you. When the Denver Broncos won the Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998, they had the smallest OL in the NFL. They even managed to produce a 2,000 yard rusher in 1998, and, if I remember right, that 2,000 yard rusher sat out 8 quarters due to blowing out the opponent.

I didn't say that he sees them every day. To my knowledge he doesn't work on Husker players regularly. I do know that he's had more than one occasion to assess the size of our O line in person. Zatechka is about as plugged in as could be to this team. I'm also friends with a couple of the Drs who work on players though I haven't been able to tailgate with them this year yet.

Chinander does need to go asap. He is terrible. I have been saying that since we hired him. His defense was pathetic at UCF and is worse at Nebraska. Nebraska deserves better!

There are also different kinds of weight. Muscle weight versus fat weight shows up on the field. The pipeline that Rob Zatechka played on was dominated by 300 pounds of muscle. Wiegert could dunk a basketball. Most of those guys also ran 40s in the 4.8-5.1 range. HOw many of our current guys can match that. Also, bench press and other stats aren't available but I remember Stai and Zatechka among others as benching close to 500 pounds.

Wellllll...we also had Boyd Eppley and his supplements. Make no mistake, Osborne recruited good linemen but they didn't all turn out to be All Americans. He also had the luxury for most of his career of offering more scholarships than we can now. That also limited the talent that other lessor programs were able to land. Times are different.
