Cal basically said that he hates the grad transfer rule, but he's damn well gonna do it if it means keeping them from someone else....

But the overarching tone was reaching out in support of his friend Bruiser

Cal emphatically says he doesn't like the 1 & done either, but it's part of the rules so he lives with it and wins with it.

Cal was talking about grad transfers... And I didn't quite get it.

Any of you know the background?

Has Duke taken any grad transfers ? Was Rodney Hood a grad transfer or a normal transfer? (Edit: Looking it up, he was a normal transfer from Mississippi State although he only played 1 season for Duke before turning pro.)

The only grad transfer UK has taken was Julius Mays (who played for UK in 2012-13) so presumably if Duke did it before UK, it would have been 2012-13 or before.

But Lee was the one who had his lifetime dream of playing in the NCAAT smashed.
He is a great kid. I am sure if had any clue that his transferring may hurt his old school (that had given him a chance to play college basketball and a four year degree) or coach; there is NO way he would have left. I am sure RP would have encouraged the young man to stay at Drexel. Lee and RP are just victims in this...

Yeah, we've never taken a grad transfer. We've taken... what, four transfers I think... (Jones, McCleod, Curry, Obi) and none of them were grads. Was he thinking of someone else?

And I don't get it... what's the issue with grad transfers? You've played your undergrad somewhere... why would you then have to wait another year to play as a graduate student? Seems a bit unfair to the players.

I think it is they can transfer and play the same year. Without setting out a year. That is my take.

He gets to take a dig at Pitino. Which he loves. I'm sure Pitino will take a dig back in the next week or two.

Yeah, the thrust of this is to support his buddy Bruiser Flint, who just lost his job at Drexel because his team sucked this season because of an unexpected departure of their star player, Damion Lee, who transferred as a grad student to Louisville and was immediately eligible under the rule the NCAA put in place a few years back.

The player for UK he's referring to was Julius Mays, who is the only grad transfer Calipari has taken. He's saying that there are times when a guy is going to transfer somewhere, so where do you want him to go? To Duke? To UL? To a conference rival? He's gonna go, so somebody will take him.

But he's angry because Bruiser lost his job. And he's not lashing out at a particular school or player, just frustrated with that rule because he knows a coach somewhere spent 3 years or more pouring his heart and soul into that guy and now he's allowed to just leave without even sitting a year. He already didn't like it, but seeing his buddy lose his job over it drove that home.

We haven't? At UK it was Mays as mentioned. If trolling, please reveal yourself.

I don't think it's a logical statement by Cal, and he seems to have the facts confused. It seems to be mostly an emotional statement guided by:

1. His fierce loyalty to his friends (of which bruiser is one)
2. His deep passion for taking shots at Rick
3. His hyperawareness of the one other coach who is giving him a run for his money both in recruiting and on the court since he's gotten to UK (K)

Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with Cal on this.

Flint isn't a great coach and has had years at Drexel, but his time has come and gone. No one player was going to change that.

I hate rules on transfers anyways, especially when a coach can break a contract to go to another school. Same goes for grad transfers: I have no issues with it

But an idiot UofL fan that tries to call out Cal...

If Julius was leaving a program behind where a coaching change was in the works, Cal isn't being hypocritical. Anyone know if that was the case?

Just like card fans said that kids can't have a relationship with a school and program in one year but they are parading around handing out rings and getting tattoos of two kids that only played there a year. I guarantee our former OAD players are around more in the years to come than they are.

They are hypocritical in every sense of the word. They are a dumpster fire right now. They honestly believe everything that happened that nothing more is coming from it Now they are going to air more of their dirty laundry on selection Sunday. Priceless

Gotcha. It did seem out of character, given that Cal has always been REALLY vocal about putting the kids first. Your number 2 made me laugh.

It is a little off topic but here is my take on grad transfer rule and non-grad transfer rule...

97 or 98 percent of kids who come to d1 schools on scholarship do not get drafted by nba. Thus they should (ideally) be selecting a school on how it will prepare them for life after basketball (not really how it works but it should be). Hence the coach at the school should not matter as much as the school itself. Thus transferring without penalty when a coach leaves is not (imo) warranted.

However if a kid graduates before his eligibility is up then two things: one, he doing at least the academics right; and two, getting to go to a grad program that better preps him for life is consistent with the idea of a scholar athlete. So a non punishment grad transfer seems proper if we really are about the best interest of the 98% that will not make it in the nba.

I know that is altruistic thinking but I think the NCAA should be altruistic when setting rules.

Btw I know lee transferred because of basketball not academics but this reply is about the rule in general and not that one kid.

How are all these guys graduating in three years while also playing basketball for their high level schools?

Are they majoring in an easy major?

Evidently Cal must have thought that Hood or someone else at Duke was a graduate transfer. He admitted it seemed hypocritical because he had taken Mayes , but he did it because other highly respected programs ( Duke) were doing it . It wasn't intended to be a shot at Duke , just a shot at the NCAA's rule . IMO

Some (like max bielfeldt at IU) were redshirted as freshman and graduated in four years. UM did not offer him a fifth year scholarship feeling they had met their commitment to him with four years and a degree.

Nick Zeisloft (also at IU) was redshirted as frosh at Illinois St then played two years. He is an exceptional student who used his freshman year to get a head start on three years to graduate, and also came to college with some credit under his belt. You know, a real student athlete. That gave him two years to play at IU and work on an mba from Kelly school of business

No, not all D1 players are Ben Simmons in their collegiate intentions.

As one who cheers for IU but respects what Cal is doing at UK I applaud your great student successes who also play well, like Alex Poythress. There are too few like him in the entire NCAA.

Question: (I like the rule, btw) Cal said the rule "hurts kids." I understand how it can hurt a program or a coach, but I can't figure how it hurts kids. What did he mean?

Lee sat out a year bc of injury, so was at Drexel for 4 years, but only played 3. Guys like Trey Lewis and Julius Mays already sat out a year due to transferring schools prior to UK, so they were in college for 4 years and played 3. It's almost always a situation where they have been in school for 4 years, but only played 3 due to injury or a previous transfer.

Duke fan. Not trolling.
Disagree. Reveal yourself especially if using "we" on a UK site with no moniker.

At minimum it's just rude to trick anyone into thinking these are past UK grad transfers. At max it's cowardly having anyone posting as unmarked UK imposter.

For example I may not like LouBoy's team, but respect him as an honest poster. Even if the same dude. Rant over.
