I did. Huge crowd. The room was packed. Cohen, Vic, and Moorhead all spoke.

Cohen talked about high team GPAs, teams in postseason, and promised a great hire for baseball.

I know most people think Vic will leave when Texas A&M opens, but he got choked up when he talked about what Mississippi State and the people of Starkville mean to him.

Moorhead addressed the fact he’s from the north. He said he hears the rumblings that he is going to have a hard time recruiting since he isn’t from the south. He laughed and said if you can recruit then you can recruit doesn’t matter where you are from. He had your normal rah rah coaching stuff, but I was impressed with his speech.

Overall it was a great time.

I’m glad it’s not outside at the Beau anymore.

The thing the "ain't from the South" people forget about JoMo is that he is from a very blue collar background just like a lot of the parents of the kids we recruit. He understands their concerns and connects with them on a basic level.

Over 400 Coast Dawgs in attendance...

Golden Nugget did an awesome job in accommodating us - food was great and they had many bars located throughout the ballroom to keep the wait times down. Outstanding atmosphere.

Coach Moorhead may indeed be a Yankee, but you would never know it. He is not arrogant what so ever, but at the same time very confident. Extremely likeable guy, took pictures and signed memorabilia until every fan was satisfied (something the last staff never did).

Coach Schaefer always does a fantastic job... and he conducted a live auction at the end of our event, which raised an additional $5,000 for our chapter scholarship fund.

Overall a great night.

80% of the time your recruiting is a function of your coaching, I don't care how slick of a talker you are, you have to prove it on the field first

That being said, being from the south really means nothing and at MSU, we really don't need 'one of ours', our own people are often our problem

How big is that alumni association out there? It seems I have asked this question before

Either way, loads of potential as far as economy and potential students/athletes from that area, I think it needs to be a major focus when it comes to student recruiting, would love to see GTR hook up with Hobby or Bush

Sort of. Eventually, your recruiting is a function of coaching. And it's certainly easier to recruit as a new head coach if you did a good job as a coordinator. But a good recruiter gets a couple of years of grace as a new head coach (or longer if they are showing steady improvement, even if it's underachieving for the talent present). If you're a bad enough recruiter, you likely never get off the ground for your coaching to get you anything. If you're a good enough recruiter, the talent influx can make-up for mediocre coaching (but not bad coaching).

it's well worth it

go if you can. our coaches are very impressive in person. take the kids as it is very family friendly. Coach JoMo was great with my kids. took a pic and signed some posters that they will appreciate for a very long time.

i have met Sherrill and Mullen and even in the minute we were with him it's easyto see that JoMo is 100x more likeable. this will translate to building relationships with recruits/family member of recruits. be excited.

We cut it off at 175 RSVPs Monday nite as had to give number to caterer yesterday. Pretty good number for a lunchtime event. Looking forward to a great event.

I don't know the exact number - I'm not really that active in it. However, I have heard it said that it's the biggest alumni association outside the state of MS.

He appears to be recruiting fine to me. Much better than Mulling.

Huntsville is another city where MSU can have a lot of success recruiting students (we've been cleaning up the baseball talent too)

I left Houston 20 years ago, but at that time Huntsville, AL had the largest chapter outside the State of Mississippi. The Houston chapter was really struggling with organization and membership....lots of petroleum engineers in the Houston area who were pissed that MSU dropped petroleum engineering as a major. I volunteered to do some phone calling to try to get the chapter more active, and got hung up on several times by some mad engineers.

If they are hosting the RoadDawgs tour, then I imagine it has improved. Plus, the younger alums wouldn't be petroleum engineers, so that problem slowly resolves itself!

I just realized that the Atlanta dinner tonight is the final stop for the RoadDawg Tour. They are in Huntsville for lunch and then flying over here. I imagine they will all be operating on autopilot by the time our show gets underway. I'll try to keep track of how many times Moorhead gets lost in one of his 3 point explanations of some concept.

So far as I know, it still is. I think the Road Tour is in Huntsville tonight. Obviously, I'm not going if I'm not sure when it is. :)

There's a send-off party here every year for incoming freshmen from this area. I think generally there are around 80 students in attendance that will be going to MSU, and they are a very impressive lot. Most seem to be engineering majors (or some other technical discipline).

It's not.

Lost that title some time back as Memphis, Birmingham, and Atlanta chapters all grew rapidly. Last I recall, Memphis had taken the title, but it's been a while since I was on the national alumni board and got the annual reports.

Went to the Meridian stop. Very impressed. There is no doubt in my mind that we traded up as far as coaches are concerned. If we are able to keep him long term I see championships in our future! Good crowd in meridian..... 200 easy which is a good croud for a lunch event.

Houston could and should be, along with Atlanta. Those are cities big enough to not have local boy politics and flags can be planted, due the economy, geography and how it relates to MSU. In Birmingham, and to a lesser degree Huntsville, it will always be dominated by Alabama and Auburn

Huntsville is much more diverse when it comes to college loyalties, and slightly less Bama/AU dominant among the educated, a lot of UAH graduates who double as sidewalkers

Memphis is obvious as it's a city that borders MS and has a sizable amount of its metro area inside the state

I have a weird interest in this type stuff
