Would he be a good assistant for us? Especially as other guys get pulled for HC jobs?

Now Alabama can go after their dream coach, Tom Crean!

Seriously, have heard this.

He goes back to UF, and Donovan has 2 former coaches with great recruiting in the south. I don't like it.

Hmm, did so well at vcu. Things never clicked there. I think him as an assistant is an excellent idea(at UK)

I hope not, but you're probably right. Payne has too much talent and experience to remain as an assist for much longer. He doesn't get enough credit for the great work he has done developing big men at Kentucky.

You have to have an opening to hire him as an assistant and unless I have missed something, Billy D doesn't have anyone on his staff rumored for HC job this year and I doubt he'd fire or demote someone to get Grant back,

Now he can possibly throw him a life raft like Cal did Tony Barbee (though I am not sure UF is serious enough about bball to allow a $300K special assistant), but those guys can't recruit. So he'd be neutered in that regard.

I could see him taking some time off to reevaluate or maybe taking a job with a mid-major.

University of Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle announced Sunday the firing of the Crimson Tide men's basketball coach Anthony Grant.
"Earlier today, I informed Anthony Grant that he will not be retained as head men's basketball coach at the University of Alabama," Battle said. "This decision was reached only after a great deal of deliberation, but I feel it is in the best interests of the basketball program to make a change in leadership. This has been a very difficult decision, as I have the highest respect for Anthony as a coach, as a molder of young men, and as a person.

Oh, these SEC football schools never learn. Bama should have kept Gottfried; Auburn should have kept Cliff Ellis; MSU should have kept Stansbury. And the list goes on. All three of these guys were victims of their own success. Granted, they had bad years, but they also had some years that were far better than the norm at these schools. Still, Anthony Grant has vastly underperformed for a school with Bama's resources and should have been fired already.

Alabama is the type of program that needs to hire an experienced, successful coach who's out of work, for whatever reason. Similar to what Auburn did with Pearl.

Glad it was announced and happened for them today. Their fans were saying earlier this morning that there was a tweet in reference to this. They said the only way their names would get mentioned on basketball's biggest day, was if they announced it today. LOL

My list if I'm the AD at Bama.....

Richard Pitino--Name and pedigree...worked under father at UL and Billy at UF...now has some experience...

Kenny Payne--Cal's man...only a matter of time...real players type of coach...

Rick Stansbury--has the sec experience...just helped aggies haul in one of the best recruiting classes

John Pelphrey--sec experience...has worked under billy...

Archie Miller--bout time for him to take a big boy step...he'll be a hot name for years to come...

Eric Mussleman--LSU assistant...basketball name and pedigree...extensive pro experience in front office and on bench...

Larry Shyatt--Wyoming HC...former Billy D right hand man...

Not really a surprise. The bigger surprise will be who they hire. It's a mediocre spot. It's always going to be a guy on his way up but just getting off the ground.

Pelphrey was a HORRIBLE coach. He wasn't even decent at South Alabama.

Why Dick Jr?! What's he proven besides he didnt get aborted.

As a UK fan it is pretty much unfathomable to me that there are fan bases that just don't really care about basketball. How could you not?

Then again, I don't really care about football. It's so damn slow. I'm pacing my house before a football game is over. But hey, plenty of time for pee breaks.

Given it more thought than I, but I don't see Pel getting another chance in the SEC. Payne will go somewhere, but the SEC? I guess, maybe. I'd think Shyatt is ready to leave. Who wouldn't want to leave Laramie realizing of course one of our own is there.

You two are in the vast minority in your opinion. Most of this country favors football by a wide margin over basketball, and it's not even close.

I love basketball and I'm loving this season, but I'd take a national title in football any day of the week over a national title in basketball.

Alabama is likely going to go after the biggest home run that they can. They will not let Auburn pass them in any sport. Auburn hiring Pearl and Pearl getting a top 15 class has them scared so they will try to catch back up with a big time hire.

I would hope and it would seem like Kenny Payne would start off a click lower like Antiqua. Have to simmer some in the Sun Belts before you leap into the fire of the SEC.

We are a basketball school 8 NCs to 0 for football and although I believe our football is on upswing can't see a NC in our future, but you are right Football is bigger than basketball in most places other than Ky, North Carolina and possibly Virginia.

Not trying to be a prick ...especially because you are a good poster. But I don't see marshal leaving his current job except for a school or program unless they are dedicated to,basketball. Like an indiana ect
