FWIW, I saw Kiss was very much hyped and into the game, cheering his mates on. That doesn't mean he's happy about not playing. Who would be? I think our fellow fans are going to have to get used to this scenario from time to time, with the alternative being that we never improve our roster.
It could also be that he went from leading scorer in the game last year to a DNP coaches decision yesterday. So while he was into the game by the end he may have been frustrated and upset about not getting into this game.
Reality of athletics? How about reality of life? I've always felt organized sports is one of the best ways to teach life lessons, and all these young men will be better for the experience. Of course it sucks for him now but, if he has the right guidance and attitude, Peter Kiss might benefit from this more than we think.
Young is just a way better on the ball defender, than his poor offensive decisions. We've seen enough of Kiss than he's not a good defender, athletically gifted yes. We all know Pike appreciates defense more than offense. Our two best on ball defenders are Mathis and Young. He will always get his 20 minutes anything offensively is icing.
Correct. For the past week, every time he's been in front of a mic, Pikiell has mentioned his players having to get ready for games during final exams. Maybe Kiss' schedule dictated that he hustle outta there right quick.
I'm willing to see how things play out. I don't see what all the hand wringing is about. This is a team sport. The emphasis should be on doing what's best for the team. I trust that Pikes knows what he's doing. It's his millions on the line, after all. As long as the team wins, I'm happy.
Maybe. I guess we won't know unless someone asks him. Even then, he's likely to be diplomatic. I don't have a problem with not knowing, but I see a lot of folks here do. The team is the thing for me.
I seem to recall some discipline and attitude talk a while ago. Maybe it’s still behind closed door td and all we see is the lack of playing time.
Someone posted pictures from the locker room after the game yesterday and everyone was in it except Kiss. He wasn't in any of the pictures.

PS - I understand the concern to date, but this kid has the tools to deliver against some of our toughest competition ... our coaches have to work on his on the court decisions.
Not sure why we deserve an explanation But how about he is not good enough to be on the floor right now? Rutgers is getting better. The talent is getting better. This is big10. We are staring down a potential 10-3 record going into 2020. the only reasonable place you could play Kiss is if he took young’s minutes. The problem there is young is much better defensively and much more versatile when not playing out of control(which I agree young does a lot). Young has a lot of potential if he can get under control and make better decisions.
kiss needs to focus on getting better everyday, support his teammates and enjoy the ride. Knowing pikiell’s coaching style and substitution patterns he will get another opportunity. Needs to be ready for it.

No. This is his 4th year in college. Unless he can somehow wrangle a 6th year our of the NCAA, the 20-21 season is his final year to play.

Watched him flipping up layups at halftime of the SH game as if he didn't care. Kid has the reputation of being pretty much a jerk. By not playing him I think Pike will open up another scholarship. Good riddens.

We don’t need or deserve an explanation. Pike feels other guys are better suited to help the team win. It’s that simple.
Agree. Young has the skills to compete in conference play more than some others. Believe that he will improve as we go forward.
If he could dish off to a big man while driving to the basket it would help.

As of now, he is a casualty of the team's depth getting better. If we had not turned it around this past week, then perhaps there could have been a legitimate call for giving him a shot. You just can't play 11. Duke is in a similar situation but plays a position with less depth so he gets a few minutes depending on Myles foul situation. Hopefully he stays till the end of the season and then does what is best for him. If he can get his RU degree within that timeframe all the better. However, I would be shocked if he left after he completes his academic requirements for the semester.

Maybe Kiss doesn't want to play if he's out of the rotation....maybe he's happy that RU is winning but figured he'd be a bigger part of things and sees how roles have been expanded where he isn't a true guard that can dribble pass shoot as well as others can.
Every minute that Mulcahy doesn't learn on the job now, is a lost opportunity to build for the future. Every minute where Jacob Young isn't wearing down an opponent's guards with his defense, is also a loss for the team as well.
It's a matter of how the team fits together more than the player's talent or ability. At this time last year, we were struggling and had fans wondering how many B1G games we could win.....some had mentioned less than 3 B1G wins......
Eugene, Issa Thiam, Peter Kiss, Shaq Doorson and Geo Baker was your starting 5 at Seton Hall 1 year ago..... A team that had one person to handle the ball, or create off the dribble (Baker) 2 stationary shooters (Thiam and Kiss), a limited passer in Doorson vs where Myles Johnson is and Eugene as your go to offense without shooting range. The freshman were very green and inexperienced.
There are 4 new starting players from 1 year ago vs Wisconsin on the road and Seton Hall on the road. This year's version is a better team because we've turned the roster over...Kiss just happens to be part of the limitations we struggled with. Other players we now have, just can do more thinga well on offense or defense.
I root for all RU players and I think there's a role for Kiss if this was a different season or roster at RU. I just dont see how removing any of the players from the rotation now & playing Kiss, makes RU a better team now, next month, 2 months from now or this time next year.

Which perimeter player(s) should he be taking playing time from?
I'm guessing he is on pace to graduate in the spring. If so, he can do a graduate transfer and maybe Jay Young will want him at Fairfield
As the trajectory of this program elevates, the fringe players are going to find themselves more and more marginalized. That is why you see some pretty talented players from the top programs transferring each year.

I will reserve Young's observation and ask who else on the roster has his quickness on both ends, can defend either guard spot and get to the basket.
If he was a more refined guard, he'd still be at Texas, starting over what Shaka Smart has there. There's 20+games where Young is going to make an impact in either direction (wildly effective or ineffective).
If you could convince me to have Mulcahy look to score more off the dribble and then pass into a turnover, I would live with that, vs not looking to score.....if you could convince Young to make an extra pass and trust he'll get the ball back, vs trying to score, I would live with that too.
The staff will sort out both Young and Mulcahy but with both players clearly showing holes in their early careers, I can see BOTH getting better in B1G play this year. That would make RU a better team.

I think everyone understands the best play and at this level it is solely about winning and he may not make the cut. The question is why is he not getting into the game in a 20 point blowout? If we get a few injuries then I think he will be needed to play some. Sounds like injury is out based on warmups. So discipline? Has he told Pike he is leaving after the semester? Is he somehow preserving some redshirt status? Has he said he would rather not play in garbage time?
Jacob Young would have to be a whole hellafied more refined to start over Matt Coleman, Courtney Ramey or Andrew Jones.
Answer to your question...maybe Mathis. I need to see more of Young on the defensive end. I am certain Young can get to basket on offense quicker than Mathis.
I really don't think we want Mulcahy even thinking about scoring in the paint. Knocking down wide open 3s (at an appropriate %) is a must for him to be on the floor.
Your premise about both getting better I totally see and necessary for us to hit what goals we have.

That leaves 74 minutes to mix and match the strengths and weaknesses of Mathis, Young, Caleb and Paul. I think it is optimal for all 4 to be in the rotation.
Mulcahy can definitely take it to the rim and score in the paint. He has been holding back. He’ll start getting to the paint and dishing for easy dunks. Hopefully it will be this year, but if not it will definitely be by next season. He is a dynamic play maker. I think far too many underestimate his athleticism.
