One of my younger sons works part time as a cook at a pizza joint. They have a big carry out business. The carry out counter has a woman checking people out with a tip jar.

None of those tips go back to the cooks who made and packaged the food? The hourly rate is the same. What?

I work an upper management type job and am good at what I do. I havent had anyone want to tip me yet. I understand waitresses only make like $3 per hour and rely on tips (which i think is totally wrong) but those who make above minimum wage should not expect a tip. It’s just doing their job that they get paid to do. Dont like your hourly wage? Get a degree or skill and go somewhere else and make more.
I work an upper management job and am very good at what I do. No one wants to tip me because a make a boat load of money. I enjoy tipping good service and not everyone has the skill or where with all to acquire a degree or skill. I am Attila the Hun conservative but appreciate someone’s attempt to make a living wage.

It's same with cruises. We get a drink plan and 18% is included for tips and then I still have to tip 50 cents a drink on top of that 18% or some of the bartenders give you slower service and or weaker drinks. It's cool but 18% of the price of the drink plan is a ton of money based on number of drinks consumed on the cruise.

I agree with others the USA is only place that does this dumb tipping logic.

This is a bit of a hot topic for me as well.

My favorite part is this little game they play at the pizza place, Subway, etc. After your run your card, they all usually say something to the effect of "Ok, the screen will ask you a question".......

.....when the only "question" is how much will you tip, and there's NO option for no tip.

I asked a friend who owns an establishment that does this, and he tried to blame it on the cash register company and how they set it up. I called BS, and he eventually admitted that this is just another way to supplement the salary of cashiers.

Right which is really the problem I have with it. It’s put in place for the business owner to pay staff less hourly and point to the tips. I don’t blame them for trying but I’m not supplementing your staff comp by paying more for a carry out pizza or whatever….

Tip what you want. There's nobody keeping score. Nor are working stiffs getting rich off of tips.

I hate when Starbucks hand me the card reader out the drive thru window and it asks for a tip. Ummm no, my wife already has a $15 day coffee habit without tipping for simply doing what you’re paid to.

But this is the company that employees you’s fault and not the end consumer. Tipping puts the worker and consumer in bad positions while absolving the employer/service provider from blame.
You missed point completely. A delivery driver is spending more time on serving just you than any waiter/waitress at even the nicest restaurant. So don’t not tip or only tip $1-2.

I stopped doing food delivery when all the crazy delivery fees started to get added to the order. I remember once trying to get a Qdoba burrito and the end price was like $20. I just found something at home to eat.

The vast majority of server type positions are done while pursuing a career, not as a career. For an upper level manager your awareness is not extremely sharp.
I've paid my dues. I started life poor as dirt. I've worked low wage jobs including fast food and other service jobs. I worked hard without having the expectations of receiving a tip. Growing up on a farm, I worked my tail off for my family to survive. I knew what hard work was all about without any pay for it. All this enticed me to further my education at whatever sacrifice. So don't even play the card that I don't understand. Last month I saved our company over $100k. I didn't get a bonus or even a thank you, but I get to keep my job which pays my bills and that is good enough. It's what I am paid to do.

With that said, I do tip for service at sit down restaurants. It is because I know their wage is adjusted to compensate for tips which I think is totally wrong in our system and that most are college kids trying to get by. If I owned a restaurant I would adjust service wages based on their productivity. Work harder and keep people coming back, I would pay you more of an hourly wage . Pretty simple concept for those with a drive to them. Make me $$ and I will make you $$. I understand not all business owners think of it that way.

Oh, I did tip my trash pickup guy the other day because he went above and beyond picking up some of my trash that the neighborhood dogs scattered. That wasn't his job, but he did it above and beyond his expected job therefore I rewarded him.

The one that really bothers me is tipping a hair stylist. They went to school to do that job knowing their income potential. Way I figure it, they make $20 for cutting my hair in 15 minutes. That's $80 per hour if they hump and get it. I for one would love to have the opportunity to make that much per hour. Why tip them?

While I always tip at least 15-20% when ordering a delivery pizza, that is the one tipping situation I think is bs because they already charge a delivery fee. I know they say that the driver doesn't get the delivery fee, but that is a cop out. They are using that delivery fee to help pay the driver whatever the driver's hourly rate is, which is at least minimum wage. If a tip is for the service being provide by the one getting tipped, you shouldn't have to pay both a fee for the service, and a tip.

Who collects for you?
Are they an independent Co.
I wouldn't tip a Waste Management collector.
They receive the same pay and benefits that most factory workers do.
No one tips them.
Yes...not WM. I think it's one of the toughest jobs related to pay/working conditions.

I don't tip for to go food unless they bring it out to the car. The tip line is laughable... not happening... I picked up pizza for my shop guys today at papa John's... went in, at register, asked me for a tip... $0.00... I don't expect customers to tip my shop guys, why should they expect a tip from me when they're providing no service? Boxing my pizza? Get out of here with that garbage

Yes and all right wingers want to turn this country into an authoritarian fascist state with NO separation of “church and state, alas the “christofascist movement within the “sedition “ party…..sad and they evidently haven’t studied history on how that always works out!

I like the separation of Church and State, that is, the State stays out of the Church, which is what that was designed to do. I am a Constitutionist (so right-wing, if you will), and I believe in "live and let live". THat means, you live your live the way you want, but you do not tell me how to live mine. Furthermore, I believe the Constitution; I believe that we should be governed based on that document. This Country is still the Greatest Nation on Earth, and the most tolerant; if you don't believe me, feel free to pay a visit to some other countries around the world. Now, I am a Bible-believing Christian, and I love Jesus, but I will not condemn others for not believing the same way. With that said, if a person CLAIMS to be a follower of Christ, that's a completely different story, in that, if appropriate and if needed, I may correct that person. At the end of the day, I will respect your opinion, as long as it's your own, but you respect mine.

On subject: I normally do not tip if I am doing a take-out order, nor do I tip at a fastfood restaurant. I will tip at a typical sit-down restaurant. I will stiff a waiter or waitress for poor service (has to be really terrible), or poor attitude (generally, they go hand-in-hand). I have only done it twice in my life. The most recent one was at a local Chinese restaurant; when I was paying the bill, the waitress screamed at me to "HURRY UP" and was extremely pushy and gave very poor service.

Try again. Engineering manager over a construction design build firm.
Subtle, I'm-smarter-and-better-than-those-people-who-work-in-the-service-industry-and-I-make-six-figures brag. Of course, anyone can claim anything behind a keyboard.

If I didn't know better, I would think that the average salary is $150K, and that 90% of people make six figures.

I used to think of myself as a very generous person . Tip 20 % routinely in restaurants , always a ten for the bell hop. Usually 40 % or more for cabbies just to make their day .those people always spent time with me .
But at Rupp Arena buying Ice Cream for $6.50 ,or a coke for six bucks or water for 5 bucks I found there was no place on the credit card machine to leave no tip . The least was 10 % . really ? For ten seconds of filing an ice cream cone, or pouring a coke or simply handing me a bottle of water .
I finally figured out how to get through the process without tipping but it takes longer and I am wondering if I’m missing something here.
are We really expected to pay people tips for ten seconds of work? Am I a tight *** for not playing their game ?
No. I agree with you.

I tip $0.00.. And I've had bills close to $1000..
My daughter worked as a server while going through college. She told me several stories with the theme "never piss off people who handle your food behind closed doors".

Never farther from the truth. Notice I didn't include my job in the original post cause it didn't really matter. I am no better than the ones flipping burgers. In fact I can make pizzas with the best of them. I'm not above doing it again if that is what it takes for my family to make ends meat. Gotta do whatcha gotta do to feed and take care of your family.

What do you think "Upper Management, and I am really good at what I do" means? "I can make pizzas with the best of them", what exactly does that convey? While I agree with your "if you do not like your hourly job......." statement, the rest of your posts sound like a "humblebrag". Like I said before, everyone makes 200K around here, drives an 80K car, has the mortgage paid off, and can retire at age 45, but choose not to. You might be telling the truth, and you might not have intentions on bragging, but you never know behind the keyboard. For every person who tells the truth, there's probably 3-4 who are exaggerating, or flat out lying. *cough* Superfuzz *Cough*
