Well there’s the answer. All liberals want to turn our country into Europe anyway.
Yes and all right wingers want to turn this country into an authoritarian fascist state with NO separation of “church and state, alas the “christofascist movement within the “sedition “ party…..sad and they evidently haven’t studied history on how that always works out!

I used to think of myself as a very generous person . Tip 20 % routinely in restaurants , always a ten for the bell hop. Usually 40 % or more for cabbies just to make their day .those people always spent time with me .
But at Rupp Arena buying Ice Cream for $6.50 ,or a coke for six bucks or water for 5 bucks I found there was no place on the credit card machine to leave no tip . The least was 10 % . really ? For ten seconds of filing an ice cream cone, or pouring a coke or simply handing me a bottle of water .
I finally figured out how to get through the process without tipping but it takes longer and I am wondering if I’m missing something here.
are We really expected to pay people tips for ten seconds of work? Am I a tight *** for not playing their game ?

It's ridiculous. They want you to tip the pizza place now when you go and pick it up. Hell no im not. The Chinese buffets intentionally dint let you fill your own soda or water so they can say the waiters do it and to guilt you into a higher tip. Same with golden corral or whatever buffet place. Cicis doesn't do that and I respect them for it. And yes I'm a fat *** lol
And connisseur of fine dining

The practice of restaurants paying their staff below minimum wage because they make tips is ridiculous. The business is essentially putting the staff’s cost of employment on the customer and that’s wrong. I don’t praise Europe often but they got this part right. People don’t tip over there like we do because for a lot of similar services the business pays their staff a proper wage.

That all being said I do tip waiters/waitresses, delivery people, bell hops, etc. I leave a 15% tip at least. If I receive above and beyond service I’ll tip anywhere between 20-25%.

I would not tip someone for an ice cream cone, fast food, or for anything sealed. I remember going to a fast food place (I think it was Arby’s) and there was a tip line on the receipt. I put a line through it and put the total at the bottom and didn’t feel bad.

Restaurants have to pay the difference if the tips collected don't equal minimum wage, correct?

I always give $50 to the trash collectors the week after Thanksgiving.
Who collects for you?
Are they an independent Co.
I wouldn't tip a Waste Management collector.
They receive the same pay and benefits that most factory workers do.
No one tips them.

Yeah that’s true. As of 2019 the employer must pay them the minimum wage of the state if they didn’t meet that.

Still pretty crappy though as minimum wage in most states is $7.25. So I still stand by the point of my post which was employers don’t pay their waiters/waitresses enough as you really can’t live off $7.25 anymore unless you work 70-80 hrs/week and you’d be relying on the customer to pay them enough to want to stay employed there.

Depends what you can afford.

I'd say you're better off tipping in cash rather than putting it on your credit card. America is ****ed in the sense that service and hospitality jobs are so reliant on tips to survive rather than having a liveable wage.

Plus if you tip in cash the person can pocket it themselves. If you place it on the card, the owner and payment service get a slice.

Also 20% nowadays is the minimum to tip at a restaurant. It'll be 25% eventually.
Yeah I’m throwing money away if I pay/tip with cash. If you have the cash to pay for something why would you not use a credit card? Rack up as many rewards as you can. Haven’t paid one dime in credit card interest and haven’t used a debit card either since I turned 19. Just a waste when I see people use cash or a debit card.

This is one big reason why I almost never go out anywhere anymore. Restaurants, bars, fast food, coffee, donuts, anything. I can drink at home, cook good food and sit out on my patio and enjoy it.

I honestly can't believe how many truly lazy people have food delivered to their house.

No. It’s ridiculous. Everywhere you go these days someone wants a tip. Tips belong to people who serve for a period of time, not a transaction.

I’m there with you. My thing is to be a cheap hero. Like, for example for an amount where a good tip is $5 I’ll leave $9. Coz I had to leave $5 anyway just to not be a jackass. So it really only cost me $4 of discretionary funds to take it to $9 and make that person’s day. And how often can you make someone’s whole day for only $4? Bargain rate hero.

But I get creeped out too when the payment system prompts me to a tip for someone who literally only rung me up. Which doesn’t even include having to count out change in the modern world. Even if you can bypass it you still have to look like an ******* bypassing the tip. And imo it’s kind of a douche move to make someone look like an ******* just for not paying someone extra to swipe a credit card.

I also think it’s kind of weird which services get tipped. For example no one ever tips a shoe salesman. But those people actually have to kneel down and handle stranger feet all day. Ask me to carry luggage or foot and I’m hauling suitcases all day. So why is it only the people with the easier job get tipped.

I never tip for dine out or anything like an ice cream cone. I’ll tip in a resultant, bell hop, ect. But I won’t tip you 20% for making me a coffee that took you 5 seconds and cost $6.
Agree.
I'm all in on supporting local but when it comes to coffee, I'm Dunkin all the way.
You the consumer actually gets "tipped" through their rewards app for being a customer.

I'm with most of you all. If I'm at a restaurant and receive at least acceptable service I tip pretty good. Fast food, take out orders, etc......come on. I may tip a dollar or two for take out depending on how it's handled, but just taking an order and handing it to me..........NOPE.

I went to a Moe’s the other day and went through the line and got a jr burrito, chips & queso and a regular drink, $16. Then, when I get ready to pay, the machine asks if I want to tip. I could have passed but I didn’t, I chose 10%. I don’t always do that, but I was feeling generous. If you think about this scenario though, it’s almost as though the person checking you out is saying “your total is $16 dollars sir, but are you sure you don’t want to make it $17.60 for absolutely no reason whatsoever?”

Tipping is for service, it’s not a surcharge on something you’re already paying a ridiculous amount of money for anyway. The $16 already included the actual making of the burrito and placing it on a tray for me. I had to pour my own drink. Tipping is getting out of hand for some things, no doubt.

I always tip waiters but have never and will not ever tip someone serving me an overpriced beer in any venue in any situation. Concerts at Rupp are ridiculous!! I just paid $23 for 2 beers and you want me to tip the guy that opens it? And NO I'm not tipping for anything served to me at a sporting event period!

Ask your hamster they would be able to answer your question. If it is just get some caulk put in your ***. Worked for another poster the other day . He was so excited he even started a thread about his adventure. You can think me later, and I’m not going to charge you this time for the poop, I mean scoop.

If Im at the ball game and the vendor brings the beer to me he can keep the change. If I have to go to the concession stand they get nothing. Giving you an ice cream cone, no, that's not tip worthy.
I rarely buy things from concessions at games, but when I do if the kids working g are doing it for their baseball programs I always tip. Haven't been to Rupp in a while, so you say the ice cream has gone from $4 to $6.50? Probably won't be getting my $$$, although it is a rare thing and l like it so so l probably will. Planning in going to a few state tournament games especially yo see Sheppard & Perry.

No, you're not. Remember a tip is supposed to be something you give for exceptional service. It's your choice if you want to give one and how much to give. Handling me a bag of food, is not great customer service. The whole tipping thing is out of control. I'll tip if it's deserved, but I'm not giving you a big tip for doing what you're paid to do and not even doing it well.

I try to tip well at sit down restaurants. I had a daughter who worked at O'Charley's during college and they didn't require customers to pay a minimum tip if you had a large party like a lot of places. She would sometimes have a large party of 20-25 people come in which meant that would pretty much be her only table for at least an hour and sometimes longer if they sat around and talked. She has had parties that would tip $10 on a $400-500 check or more if they had a lot of drinks. I think she only made around $2.50 per hour and also had to share a portion of her tips with the ones having to seat people instead of waiting tables that day. She honestly could have made more money at a fast food place or even Walmart most days.

With that said I refuse to tip at a coffee shop or pizza place when I am picking up my food to go. They are already getting paid to make my pizza of coffee and aren't going above and beyond their paid duties to deserve a tip in my opinion. That also goes for a barber shop. You are charging me $15 for a haircut that takes 15-20 minutes and want a $5 tip? No thanks.

This is a bit of a hot topic for me as well.

My favorite part is this little game they play at the pizza place, Subway, etc. After your run your card, they all usually say something to the effect of "Ok, the screen will ask you a question".......

.....when the only "question" is how much will you tip, and there's NO option for no tip.

I asked a friend who owns an establishment that does this, and he tried to blame it on the cash register company and how they set it up. I called BS, and he eventually admitted that this is just another way to supplement the salary of cashiers.

Nah not really...

Theres a lot of articles lately about the American consumer being pissed off at the expected tipping on literally everything.

I also personally don't understand why we tip on $$$ value for the same work. If you bring me a $20 steak compared to a $50 steak you do the same work... but I'm expected to pay more lol
Agree with a lot of the above.

Also, I do some Lyft and DoorDash on the side (so weekends and some nights). And am shocked at how many (most people) will tip to get their meal delivered to them $0-$2.
I get that you think “but I’m already paying the service probably $10+ to have my meal delivered to me”. But the driver is only getting $2.50-$5 + tips for what may take 15-30 minutes and use $0.50-$2 of gas.
Pretty much same for the Lyft passengers.

But to the OP, you aren’t being tight, for only 30 seconds of service. For that amount of time if they averaged a quarter per customer they would be happy ($30 in tips for an hour).

But this is the company that employees you’s fault and not the end consumer. Tipping puts the worker and consumer in bad positions while absolving the employer/service provider from blame.

I understand but my point was if you tip in cash the person you're tipping will get more money than if you tip using a card.

If I'm tipping $10 in cash, unless they split tips, they get $10.

If you tip $10 using a card they don't get $10. There's a credit card fee that gets deducted from the $10 and if the restaurant in question uses a payment service like Square (Block) there goes another 3% in fees. Add in the possibility that ownership takes a cut as well then you have a waitstaff who aren't getting the full $10.

I never said they didn't. The person I replied to made the comment asking why is it expected to tip more for a $50 steak versus a $20 steak.

I answered it.

I never said I don't tip, even said the minimum should be 20%.

I find I get similar service from Applebees and Ruth Chris. But I'm not a snob I know what I typically want without the waiter or waitress spending 15 minutes explaining the menu to me. So perhaps I'm not getting that higher service because I don't need it.

For the record I always do 20% but I just don't care for how it's based off $$$ value.

There's a cool coffee shop on the first floor of my apt compex. I've gotten to know the ladies that work there quite well so I always tip them a couple bucks.

But all this other ish is ridiculous
