It is this simple... Auburn is successful at basketball and Alabama is not. The powers that be at Alabama will not stand for that. They'll do everything they can to show up Auburn. Johnson wasn't getting them to that level.
They've had talent at 'Bama over the years but it all comes down to coaching. They've had great players in the past like Leon Douglas, Reggie King, Latrell Sprewell, Bobby Joe Hurt, etc. Just can't put it all together. It is this simple... Alabama basketball reminds me of the University of Texas basketball program. No matter how well they do, no one really cares. I watched UT play the other night at the Erwin Center and there could not have been more than 1500 people there even though attendance was announced at something around 5000.
I agree with the OP. Kind of like Georgia replacing Fox with Crean. Both situations that seem like lateral moves at best and potentially slight downgrades IMO.
Best coach I've ever seen Georgia have in basketball was Hugh Durham. Harrick did a pretty good job but Durham completely changed the culture. Unfortunately for Georgia, they weren't able to sustain any of the success. They were never great in basketball but showed a lot of improvement while Durham was there. Can't really see Crean getting them to anymore than a NIT on a consistent basis.Be honest, what serious coach wants to lead Georgia basketball?
Crimson snowflakesI believe the talk was that players couldn’t stand him. Thought he was too tough on them.
