Addie Deal breaks through

Well, that was quite the performance. Raining in threes, taking people off the dribble, handling the ball, playing solid defense . . . It looks like Addie Deal has arrived. It reminded me of when Ava Heiden arrived last season, but that was much later. It should remind us that even highly talented freshmen require patience. It takes most players a while to adjust to the college game, but adjust they will. And watching Deal last night was quite the revelation. Her confidence was almost tangible. You could sense she was playing free, that she knew what she was doing. No more tentative, deferential moves. This bodes well for the Hawkeyes as the challenges continue to grow.

BTW: Callie Levin didn't play last night, which is a shame but understandable. Levin's role increased with Feuerbach out, but now there just aren't enough minutes to go around. But Levin showed she can play, and I imagine she'll be needed again this season and still has two years left.

Happy for Addie! Hopefully this is the start of a trend for her. For some reason a lot of posters seem to think that the only way players develop is by playing in games. Why do they even have practice then?

Regarding Callie, she's a solid player, but with a fully healthy roster (including Emely,) she's the 7th option at guard. There just aren't enough minutes in a game to go that deep in the bench in a competitive game.

I have mentioned before that coming off the bench and not getting extended minutes was new for her and was going to be a big adjustment. Last night she got extended minutes and produced from the beginning in a lot of ways. Hopefully this helps her confidence and she continues like last night. I do still think JJ has a “problem” with too many players and not enough minutes. So far, so good however.

Coaching staff should have been playing her more, deference to seniors.

Lot of tough games upcoming, good to have a player of her caliber getting more minutes
I disagree - Addie has needed to get comfortable with the team. Had you played her more we may have 1-2 more losses. Addie is still a negative on defense. She is still having an inability to get around screens. If you notice they went on runs at the end of both halves with her in. Her offensive players accounted for 4 -3's by my count in the last 2 minutes of each half.

Her biggest issue was quickness and reaction time. That seems to be improving, it also seems she is getting more comfortable with the speed of the game. I stated at the beginning of the season, her offensive arsenal is unmatched by anyone else we have on the team other than maybe Chit Chat.

I think they have brought here along just fine.

I agree. They're currently in a good position to be able to host the 1st two rounds in March. If they spent more time getting clever with rosters and playing the freshmen more, they probably would have a couple more losses on the season and would be sitting outside those top 4 seeds. For the in-season goal of going as far as possible in the tournament, getting to host is, IMHO, the most important factor.

Fantastic response. Did you notice her excellent defense in the lane in the 2h. Improvement noted.

I thought the defense was improved Scoti. Then I noticed at the end of both halves they would isolate her offensive player with a screen, she couldn't get through it and they would hit the 3. Still a work in progress on the defensive side. It was more a point showing progression and even though she had the offensive numbers there are still some areas (defense that can effect the outcome of the game). Her arrow is definitely up.

Addie Deal said, "I've been focusing honestly on quickening my shot. So, I thought that was a great game to do that. I've been working a lot with Coach Randy, Coach Abby. I've been working late at night with my parents. You know, just always being in the gym," on the radio as I drove home. Tip o' the hat to the Hawkeye Radio Network with Rob Brooks and Katherine Reynolds.

I saw three positives at the game: Senior Urgency, Game Slows Down for Addie, and Friendly Confines of Carver. I hope the first two continue, and I worry about road games. We won three road games against the bottom of the league but not always easily. On the other hand, we play several teams at home from the top of the league. I had to picture it differently on a spreadsheet to realize that the path to a good finish involves taking care of home. The linked table shows results in the B1G 10 Standings table.

Totally agree with all of this. She wasn't quite ready for this level of play through the first half of the season. Most players aren't, regardless of rankings.. She had the physical skills, but her head was a step behind where she had to be and what she needed to do. She looked indecisive and uncomfortable, but she's obviously very coachable. Credit to her and the staff on the progress she's shown.

Another highly rated recruit Divine Bourrage from Davenport Iowa who was ranked about the same as Deal if not slightly higher has only played a grand total of 1 minute in LSU four conference games with zero points. As another poster earlier mentioned a lot of these freshman need some time to develop. Deal is progressing nicely

She looked very frustrated/disappointed in the early games, but I'm sure she will feel more at ease after last night! Need her, and especially Hannah, to keep that spark going through the B10 season! (even Kylie F. looks like she's moving better than ever!)

I would like to see the rotation of Ava Hanan and journey no offense to Mrs hays she is lot ready for big ten play. It kills the offense a defense. She will be fine but not now.

Regardless your viewpoint of whether Addie should have had a larger part in the rotation at the beginning of the season or she should have been brought along slowly as Jan has chosen I think we can all agree this is the Addie we have all been hoping for. To me the main reason for the break through was she played with a great deal of confidence, looseness, and “hunted her shots”! That’s what great scorers do. I thought before she was tentative in her play focusing on not making mistakes. I believe her interview where she said all the work she had put in with Randi, Amy, and her parents had made the difference. She will most likely have some tough games, as all players do, but she has proven to herself that she belongs. Let the growth continue👊

Addie D is starting to show what she is capable of and she and we all hope it will be the future. She likely will have good and less than good games down the road. Let's all hope the good become more frequent. Two things that played a roll in her performance against Oregon that will likely change going forward, Oregon played a lot of zone which really freed up a lot of open shots from the perimeter. Addie is now going to be recognized as a outside threat by opposing teams. She will not be guarded by the other teams weakest defender. Her skills are improving let's give her time.

Looked to me like she wasn't pressing as much. Letting the game come to her and taking what the D gave her.
Frosh tend to over think at times and I think we are witnessing the game slowing down and her just reacting and playing.
Confidence is huge and she is gaining that every time out.

Yup in previous outings she was just very tentative and making bad decisions. She would regularly pass up an open 3, only to dribble directly into traffic and turn it over, or make an ill advised pass. Against Oregon she took those 3's or dribbled with a purpose to get to a spot or the rim. You can tell that the game is slowing down for her, opening up her potential for more productive outings going forward.
