I don’t think Schiano is the best coach around. He certainly has issues, but so do most coaches. He is the safest choice by far and if he hires a quality OC and let’s them do their job which I think he will then I think he has a shot to do very well.
That's fair. Clearly a safe choice and we need that now. And if we give him everything he asked for it will make everyone sit up and take notice.. and that means recruits. At a minimum, let Schiano bring us back to where we were when he left for the NFL.. THEN go find this super-coach the critics think we can get because you ain't getting one now.

As soon as I read weak, watered down Big East I stop reading...it simply means the poster knows nothing about college football
Exactly.. the Big East proved the ESPN talking heads wrong time and again. First that it was Miami and the 7 dwarves.. then when a couple of the dwarves would beat Miami and others.. then we were top heavy. Then after the first raid by the ACC we were doomed.. then WVU and Louisville proved otherwise.. beating Miami and other "name" programs and Big East teams winning bowl games where they had no chance.

I am not a member of the Schiano-worshipping cult, and I would have preferred an alternate to him. However, Zappa's post is the most valid reason, and best answer to the OP's question, as to why Schiano is the best choice at this time. The reason is NOT because he is a great coach. As correctly stated by the anti-Schiano crowd; he has his flaws from a pure coaching perspective. Instead, it is the simple truth that any other better head coaching options have no interest in RU, period, and I don't blame them at all. Given that, I am OK with Schiano coming in and trying to build (again) a foundation that gives RU a chance for long term future success. It's unfortunate and embarrassing that RU is back in this position of being stuck with Schiano to bring him back to start over from scratch again, nearly 20 years after he started the same process the first time around, but the Flood and Ash disasters ruined everything. Hopefully, Schiano learned some lessons from his mistakes made in his first tenure at RU, and from his other coaching stops since then. And hopefully Hobbs and RU can open up their minds and wallets and realize that Schiano is the best choice for RU right now to bring some stability, competitiveness, respect to the FB program.

There’s a handful of only Schiano’s.
There’s a boat load of GS only because Norvell, Clawson and 3 or 4 can’t miss guys have zero interest .
Jedd Fisch was high on the list of new coaches Hobbs was targeting as of yesterday.

cali, still pissed that ash was let go? i guess someone has to be hobbs butt boy, you sing the same song he does
Ash sucked. Some of you guys are so smitten you’ve gone to straight up making up lies. I was never, ever upset he was let go.

As to to who? The silly season is upon us. We should see. Schiano isn’t going anywhere and will always be available. That said, from what’s being said here and someone I trust, I expect it to be Schiano. As I’ve stated here, provided his comp and demands are acceptable, I’m ok with that.

If 4 teams can win a Championship, and GS never did, that's even less of a ringing endorsement.

The best argument I've heard for Schiano is he will stop the weekly embarrassments and maybe get some infrastructure built so the next coach can some in and win.

I am down with that. It just doesn't require an 8 year contract.
If you were taking a job with a big task and would report into someone who would probably look for any reason to can you early you wouldnt want a contract with extra provisions?

I get why Schiano would do it. He’s the type to push until told no. It’s the leaderships responsibility to be smarter. 8 year contract is ridiculous and outside of any standard in the profession.

Hes pushing them to show commitment. This might be the first time we actually have the state behind ru football

We'll never be better than the middle of the pack in the B1G anyway at least not for the foreseeable financial and resource future. Greg's the only guy within budget that we know about that actually has a chance at getting it done.

That's it for me.

I don't particularly like the guy and I don't think he's a very good coach.

BUT. If we're winning 6 or 7 a year in 5,6,7,8,9 years and he leaves maybe we actually can attract a coach that can take us over the top in the B1G.

Right now though with the hole we're in and the "budget" RU is talking about he's likely the best shot. Plus maybe he learned something rubbing shoulders with Urban and NFL coaches and don't forget being a friend of Belecheks.

Plus I'm pretty impressed with the reported 100 pages of homework he's done for this job.

Say what?
There will always be sport writers who take the opposite view to create controversy.
The FACT is the overwhelming majority of media, sports enthusiasts and college football fans want Schiano.
Nobody gives a **** about the people who don’t care about RU football.
You are part of the huge minority.
Go sit with the knitting circle people who don’t even know football is on TV on Saturdays
I probably care way more than you when you measure real support like $--and those NJ residents who don't give a crap about RU football or sports are in the majority and decide how much $ flows into RU from the state and what is perceived as wasteful--if RU had a majority of those that "sincerely" care but are not just fake macho men, many , many more than 4500 would have given to the Build Fund--your not recognizing that reality is counter productive--sorry I wrestled , played football and baseball in school ,love sports and am a Yankee/Jets/RU basketball/football season ticket holder for years --so don't give crap, try reality it helps get things done

Well that’s the rub. If we are going to show real commitment, maybe we can get a better coach.
Out of curiosity- do you feel he wont be better with a legit budget for staff? Maybe his previous shortcomings had something to do with him trying to do everything on his own because he lacked the ability to hire top coaches?

Any coach is better with a better staff. Can he delegate and get out of their way and will they want to work with him. GS has a reputation. Now, that was needed at the time, but RU, contrary to popular opinion, is in a much better place than his first go around. It’s going to require a different set of building skills. We need a football coach not a visionary.

To me he is the safest selection

His past APR results and other integrity issues are positive attributes

He gets the program straightened out and headed in the right direction

From my outside view the rebuild is similar to the rebuilding needed coming out of the Shea years

It’s much different from mine. We have a bigger platform from which to build, more media exposure, funding, better infrastructure and better support. Can that be better? Sure. And that is the departments job. But the bones are already there. We need a coach. A really good football coach.

I agree with you on this but coming out of the Shea years our level of competition on the field and off was at a different level also

That is why I think the rebuilding is similar

Im willing to roll the dice on him for 5 years than say addazio, hafley or some other guys that were on the list

That is very true. Which makes it even more concerning. GS is expected to out coach B1G teams now, not Temple.

Not an Addazio fan but can get behind a standard 5 year contract with some of his infrastructure asks met. Anything else is a poor deal for Rutgers.

There are three things you need to know about College Football. Everything else falls into place based on these three things

1) Recruiting
2) Recruiting
3) Recruiting

Greg Schinao can flat out recruit and has all the connections to jump-start the program and give hope where it is desperately needed .
He was definitely a much better recruiter than the last 2 guys, but he was not a great recruiter until he got a few higher end assistant coaches from Pitt. RU also reached into it's wallet more to pay these guys more than they usually paid assistants. IMHO, assistant coach pay was the number one thing holding GS back from being considered an elite coach.

Top assistants know how to coach as well as recruit. GS has to hire too many GA's and first time assistants every year. He had to spend too much time teaching assistant coaches how to coach. The is no way of knowing how good a recruiter a Rookie coaches will be before his first job. Even the non first time assistants were rarely considered good recruiters. Outside of the few assistants that got fired. Almost all of the assistants that left got more money and or promotions on what they were making here.

If the reports of $7.7million for the assistant coaches pool are correct, GS will have no problem hiring and retaining top assistants.

the fans against Schiano have made some valid points, and concerns, but few if any
suggestions on who else they want

Reportedly Hafley is not interested, if so, would you have preferred Addazio to Schiano,
regardless of length of contract?

who else, within reason, and real chance of getting?

keep in mind that Hobbs promised a new coach to the players would be in place in about a week...... it sounds like there would have been little chance a really good prospect, one maybe we haven't considered yet, would emerge and be signed, being a rush job.

chances are, he would have pulled the trigger on someone without a lot of consideration

I am less worried about out coaching anyone until we have actual players that can at least be competitive

I also would like those players to meet some academic and character standards

Schiano has shown that he can do that

Add in some positive aspects of his on loyalty and caring about his players and to me that makes him the best choice at this time

When I say coach, recruiting is a big piece of that.

The anti Schiano crowd doesn’t think that the possibility of hiring another Ash or Flood is greater than hiring another Fleck. Hafley may turn into a good coach but the chance of him turning into another Ash is more likely people. I don’t want Rutgers to take this chance. More years of futility is pretty much the death penalty, folks.
