SIAP - Schiano has a niche. His niche is he was able to build a football program from scratch into a competitive and respectable program in about as difficult an environment as there is in the country. Yes, we know he had his flaws during the 11 seasons here and we can regurgitate them. Most coaches have their flaws. He also did a lot of good things in terms of academic success for his players and putting high quality players in the NFL that to this day are still successful NFL players. I trust Coach Belichick and Coach Meyer's opinions more than fans.
Some statistics used by posters, that believe there are better options out there, do not tell the whole story as stats are cherry picked and spun. For example, Tray Clavis and the Tennessee mob brought up his 1 game over .500 W-L record as proof that Tennessee deserves a winning coach and Schiano is nothing more than average based on record. Instead of taking the time to understand where he came from and what he had to do to get to a .500 record, they chose the path of exhibited pure and utter ignorance.
As for not winning a Big East Conference, factually true, however once again facts don't tell the entire story. The 2010 season was miserable due to the EL injury with Schiano, staff and players losing focus and playing football games were no longer the top priority. Schiano made significant changes in the off-season including raiding Wanny's old staff as Wanny was walking out the door. That led to a 2012 recruiting class that was most likely the best in Rutgers history. The entire 2012 team were all recruiting by Schiano and developed by Schiano. Flood was talking with Schiano weekly during the season for guidance. Yes, Flood was the HC when we shared a Big East title in 2012, however, not to give Schiano a huge assist for the title is not telling the entire story.
As for titles, most Rutgers fans believe we're not even close to this as a goal for the next HC. Most Rutgers fans believe the goal is to a hire a HC that will lead us to playing competitive and respectable football. Once achieved, we can talk about the next steps. At this juncture, for this fan, it's pretty clear Schiano will provide the fastest path to getting us to a mid-pack football program within the Big Ten, brick by brick. It's not going to be easy, however, he's the one coach that will have the largest support behind him to achieve the program playing competitive football. It's a no brainer as no coach that has Championships at this level from having to re-build a program is walking through the door.
