A Quick Breakdown on Houston

I've seen just about every Houston game this year- my wife went to U of H and we lived in Houston for about 10 years, right near Rice Village and Herman Park, so I keep up with them as much as I can. I'll say that I certainly don't miss living in Houston, might have been better when I was younger maybe but in my mid-50s, I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

1. Robinson is their PG. He is a small, tough, quick PG. Not a huge scoring threat, can't really shoot, but defends his balls off.

2. Corey Davis is their best player. Great shooter. But he's undersized. Only 6'1. Our length can definitely give him issues.

3. Armoni Brooks is the opposite of Keldon Johnson. He wants to float around the perimeter, he's a great shooter, but rarely drives it in. He likes 3s and pullup jumpers. The idea of taking into the teeth of the defense like KJ does isn't something that appeals to him.

4. Fabian White is kind of just a solid 4 man. He rebounds, he'll make putbacks, and the occasional 15 foot jumper. Has a few solid post moves. PJ would give him a lot of trouble.

5. Breon Brady is a strong, physical 5 man. Also a little undersized (6'7 or so, although I think they list him bigger) but he uses his weight well. He gets in foul trouble a lot.

6. DeJon Jerrau is the player off the bench that worries me. A 6'3 or 6'4 PG, he's longggg and wiry, likes to get to the rim. Can't really shoot it. Hagans should be able to keep him under control.

Those are their top 6 guys. Some intangibles:

- They trap the post whenever someone throws it down there. Gotta figure out what to do about that.

- They are an EXCELLENT rebounding team. Rebounding will be what wins/losses us this game. Our size and length should certainly help, but we have to be tougher than them.

- They like to get out and run- Davis and Brooks run hard and just want a bunch of 3s in transition.

- They are a very good defensive team. This will be a slow, grind it out game. They're going to make it tough for us on the offensive end, and there's no doubt we'll do the same to them. We have to get to the FT line more than they do, and we have to get offensive rebounds and putbacks. The team that does those 2 things better will win.

Thanks for the analysis. Sounds like overall our size and post play can be the difference here.

We did a solid job on Wofford’s Cam Jackson down low and I fed like he’s better than any of Houston’s post players.

Yea great post....inside information. Just kidding

We actually flew to Houston back in January and went to their game against Wichita State! Sat pretty close behind Houston's bench, got lucky on some tickets. I should have done some scouting work for Rupp Rafters while I was there [winking]

If PJ is healthy he would be the answer to trapping the post. Travis passes to him if double teamed or visa-versa. If PJ doesn't play, the option is not as great. Richards does not catch passes very well in traffic, and Mongomery is not great on post moves and offense.

The key will be Herro/KJ guarding Corey Davis.. Davis will have speed, but it's going to be very tough for him to operate with those guys being 4 to 5 inches taller than he is. I imagine Houston's guards will face their toughest defense on Friday..

I tell you what I did notice and maybe you can help, speed they looked really quick to the ball.

They are very quick, and are really upfront on the defensive end about pressuring the ball.

Trapping the post will definitely complicate things for our bigs, it'll be tough for them to get into a rhythm down low.

We need our guards to drive it hard and our bigs need to be there to score on drop-off passes or lobs at the rim.

Guard play will be essential. If our guards thrive and actually shoot the ball well and drive when they close out hard on us and we make good decisions with the ball then obviously we will win the game.

Good recap by the OP. I've seen them a couple times and they have plenty of athletes. Will be a tough slog especially if PJ can't go. They've beaten the following teams...LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, UCF, Temple (twice).

Do you see them play LSU live?

Looking at the box score now...both teams shot 38 FTs a piece(wow). Lot of fouls being called.

Houston owned them on the glass...48-35. Houston had 18 O boards to LSU 12.

Turnovers LSU(16) HOU(15)

Leading scorers were Smart(18) and Robinson (18).

LSU has a 10 pt lead at half then was outsxored by 16 in the 2nd.

82-76. Game was played on Dec 12.

Refs were Oglesby, Valentine and Sirmons.

I did. Watched it on one of the ESPNs. Wasn't surprised Houston won it, they controlled the game it seemed. Crushed them on the glass. I had no idea at the time that LSU would turn out to be as a good as they were. I don't think LSU had fully clicked yet when they played Houston though. Might have been a different story had they played a month later.

They didn't win 31 games by being a bad team. I don't care who they played. They beat LSU, who beat us a Rupp.

Houston won't be a pushover.

Very good breakdown. I’ve watched UH a lot this year. Live near Houston. Daughter attends UH. If PJ plays, they won’t really have an answer for him. If not, it will be a grinder.

If we defend the way we did against wofford we shouldn't have a problem. I don't see it with this Houston team. Sorry
