Let's turn these negatives (Sanders and Strickland gone) into positives. We've got three ships. As Mr. Spock once said, "There are always possibilities." I'm not ready to write off next season . . . yet.

Corey's efficiency numbers are the low baseline for a high-major guard. He should be replaceable but it's going to take getting guys like Geo Baker (at least), not guys like Mensah or Bullock.

I'd describe myself as cautiously pessimistic that this staff can pull it off.

Issa, Kiss, Mathis, and Harper. If 3 out of 4 of these guys take and make perimeter shots adequately AND Baker and New Player X can handle PG duties we will be better offensively.

My concerns are defensively and whether baker can handle being the guy with the ball 30 minutes.

You will see Eugene, Baker, and Duke step up as leaders now.

Right now, our scholarships look like:

Guards - Baker, Mathis, Kiss
Wings - Thiam, Harper
Bigs - Omoruyi, Carter, Doucoure, Doorson, Johnson

Went from having 5 guys splitting 80 minutes at the two primary guard spots to just 3... and all underclassmen.

Sr - Doorson
Jr - Thiam, Omoruyi, Carter
So - Baker, Kiss, Doucoure
Fr - Mathis, Harper, Johnson

Bandoo from JUCO would be interesting. At this point, I don't know how strong the JUCO route is for a program is the state ours is. Risky.

Bandoo looks like a good player who does a little bit of everything, but he is still only here for two years, and if he does really well, might deter a 2018 kid.

I like four year players, or a grad transfer. Not sure how I feel about the JUCO route.

Keeping with the title of this thread, it’s possible we won’t need to be reliant on a ball dominant guard. We should see the ball hum around. That is a positive!

So how much of a possibility is the latter?
Also, how about any of the Connecticut kids that got released from their NLI?

I have no inside information whatsoever, so I can’t give you a probability. But I’m sure Pikiell and company are recruiting hard for him.

I do wonder if Mohamed Thiam (Issa's brother, same JUCO as Mensah) is a Plan C or D for us.

Would be a real mean move as a brother to try to take your brothers spot!

I have never heard the team was in the hunt for Mohamed Thiam.

Plenty of talented grad transfer point guards...

- Aaron Calixte, Maine
- Tre Campbell, Georgetown
- Mike Cunningham, SC-Upstate
- Kory Holden, South Carolina

Personally, I like Joseph Chartouny of Fordham.

Former Boston University guard Cheddi Mosely received his official release over the weekend and will transfer from the program, according to Rivals.com.

Mosely, a 6’5 guard from Jersey City, New Jersey, will be immediately eligible for the 2018-2019 season as a graduate transfer.

The St. Anthony’s HS product, who played under legendary coach Bob Hurley, missed all but two games this season with a knee injury. He also sat out the final 21 games of the 2016-2017 season due to an internal team matter.

As a sophomore in 2015-2016, Mosely averaged 13.3 ppg in 30 games.

According to reports, Mosely has received interest from a number of programs including Ohio State, NC State, Wake Forest, and Rutgers.

this would be great!

I really hope Pike fills the 3 spots with grad transfers. Then score with an even bigger recruiting class next year

Let’s not romanticize was Sanders was. If Big Ten Sanders was about to show up consistently next year, then yea, it’s a huge loss. But I don’t personally believe it was going to happen. At the end of the day, his stats point to an average G and I tend to believe that’s what we were going to see next year.

Our problem is bodies, and until the transfer musical chairs stops you can’t say what we will be next year. If transfers fall our way we could be a lot better next year. If not, we could be a lot worse

I would go hard to try and reclassify Hyatt because he’s a big time shooter. I don’t know what to do at point guard? I want Mulcahy for 2019 but regardless, we need help right now. I guess I would take my chances with Juco kid from Kansas if we can get him plus a grad transfer. The grad transfer ( to be named later) would still leave two spots open for 2019, grad transfer plus doorsan. So in 2019, you could add Mulcahy and Massoud or Mulcahy and a big man. Let’s say it’s Mulcahy and Massoud?

Recap- if possible, sign Hyatt now plus Juco guard and grad transfer pg. You hope that’s enough to get us competitive in 2018 with more wins. Then you could have for 2019 and this would be an outstanding 2019 group.

Baker- junior
Mathis
Mulcahy
Kiss- junior
Thiam- senior
Harper
Hyatt
Doucoure- junior
Omuyuri- senior
Carter- senior
Johnson
Massoud
the Juco kid (forgot his name)- senior

Then we hit the recruiting lotto and attract the Fab 4 for 2020.

Sound good?

No! 2018-19 is not the year. Let our 4 year guys play. Only guy I’d consider is a PG.

Keep in mind many grad transfers are looking for Ncaas Outside of CJ our grad transfers have been lousy or worse.

I think the Big 10 tourney run may help with getting these spots filled with at least 1 grad transfer. The entire basketball watching country saw a team compete at High Level and create some buzz about the future.

We do not need a "true" PG. We do not need a "true" 2G. We do not need a "true" C.

What we need is 2 guards who can shoot and can at least handle the ball. We have one already in Geo.

Of the other positions we need 2 more guys who can score and one guy who can muscle underneath.

We do not need to recruit specific positions. What we need are players who can score (at least a THREAT to score). sort out positions later once you get them on the floor. The days of specfic roles of the 1,2,3, 4 and 5 are long over.

obviously you can't survive with 5 players between 5'11 and 6'2. But we don't need to slot guys into specific positions. Any good coach nowadays can scheme and win to fit the talent. The key to winning college basketball is getting at least 4 guys on the court at the same time who are a threat to score points. 5 would b nice.

It would also help if his height is over 6' 2" or he would be a defensive liability.
That's not necessarily true. Chris Chiozza is maybe 6-foot tall and he was the only guard named to the SEC All-Defensive team.
