Which defense is easier to recruit to ?? 3-4 or 4-3??

You better be able to recruit some freaks at OLB in a 3-4 or you are going to have your LBs in some pretty bad mismatches in coverage.

The next best defense is Nebraska's 3-4 defense. We have already made significant strides on the defensive side, now it's putting it all together. We are finally not ranked in the 100s in total defense, sitting at #92 right now. So things are starting to look up for Husker Nation. #GBR

I hate it...but I'm just a fan

A front four is just better to me.

Our guys gained too much weight to fast, imo.

I suspect next year will have an improvement in athleticism.

4-3 has won just as many championships at both levels.

It's players.

3-4 is probably the logical evolution to how many teams are running spread now. It's getting to be rare that an offense lines up with 22 personnel and broadcasts to all the world that they're going to run it at you.

Fewer dedicated down-linemen more "tweener" type guys who can pursue and tackle in space.

I don't think you see many straight 4-3 defenses anymore, especially in high school and college. As was stated, with the majority of teams running some sort of spread offense, most teams that run an even front are running a version of a 4-2-5. You have to get as many athletes on the field as possible.

As far as recruiting for the defense goes, getting a NT is tough, but so is getting 4 DL that can do the job. Finding OLBs that can rush the passer and cover, also tough, but so is getting OLBs in the 4-3 that can help in coverage and stop the run.

I personally like the 4-3 better. Just used to it and more comfortable with it I guess.

I think it's easier to stop the run and have your linebackers play inside out.

I know there's going to be a lot of guys say you can do the same thing AND more with the 3-4. They're probably right. But to me itsi a more complicated defense. Quite truthfully, coaches in college don't get as much time with the players in a year that the pros do. Look at how few practices in the spring they get and no contact in the summer. That's tough.

I think the toughest thing about the 4 man front is that you have to get pressure on the QB with your front 4, especially now days when you are running a 4-2-5. If you aren't getting pressure, or if you have to send a LB or the extra DB, you leave yourself open in the secondary.

True. When teams start throwing empty backfield etc at you your secondary is stressed and you wind up having linebackers covering receivers. Oh joy. You better get to the QB and IF you are bringing a lb to do it, you better have DB that can really cover.

You see a lot of 3-5 stuff at the high school level, or I do anyway. We run the 3-5 most of the time, it is crazy simple to teach and you can get guys on the field in certain spots where normally you would need a "plus" athlete. The link below is where I have stolen most of my 3-5 stuff from . If you have a nice MLB you can really do well with it at the HS level.

@JohnRossEwing you in nebraska? where do you coach or if you don't want to say, what class school is it?

Yeah here in Nebraska and class A. I guess I should not have said that we see a lot of the 3-5 but we see a lot of odd fronts. Depending on who you are playing...some teams we play I have no freaking clue what they are running. Fremont was like that, they ran about 7 different fronts, I don't think we ever figured out if it was on purpose or if they just had trouble lining up.

That is pretty simple, I like it.

Seriously not a troll attempt but that is part of why a running team like Iowa has steamrolled your D lately.
It might be why they do this year, but it isn’t why it happened the last two years. The last two years, our team cashed out and didn’t even compete. Heck, look at what happened to our defense late last year against a Minnesota team that couldn’t even move the ball against anyone else.

Right now our defense should charge a toll fee. These holes are big enough for an 18-wheeler to drive through.

I don't buy the theory of needing better LB's to run a 3-4 rather than a 4-3 because of the need to cover athletes in space. With the 3-4, generally one LB is rushing so at that point it looks more like a 4-3. That doesn't lessen the need for good LB's with speed that can cover. Going from 4 LB's to 3 doesn't put less premium on coverage ability.

That is all a product of the spread offenses these days that are designed to get players into space one on one. You need speed at the LB position no matter what. They will either play the short zones or man to man of a TE or RB and most likely a slot guy as well.

Yeah, I love it and it is really easy to install and teach. There are a few issues, like the TE will get a free release but we live with that. It works wonders on teams that try to run outside zone stuffl.
Do you ever come with the kitchen sink like Nu did on the last 4&10. We brought 8 defenders leaving 3 DBs man on their receivers. 14 yard gain, 1st down.
