I feel like Hill was a pre-emptive move that many of us bought into at the time, myself included. Boy was I wrong. To @Loyal_2RU 's credit, he was always skeptical of the move and I think favored Brad Greenberg at the time, but I may have him confused with someone else.
RU was desperately trying to keep Hill from taking the SHU job, which was open at that time.....everyone thought Hill was a super recruiter and if hired by SHU it would have been bad for RU

Point wasn’t that they belonged on the mountain. It was Baker doesn’t.

Sure, but then who?

Since 2001, we haven't exactly had a glut of Mt. Rushmore candidates. If you drop the guys that decided they'd rather be on another college team (Young, Johnson, Omoruyi, Biruta, Rosario, etc), and the guys who were one year rentals (Yeboah, Gettys, etc).... the list gets pretty thin. Personally, I think you'd need to spend at least 3 years here to warrant a look, but others may differ on that.

Pike's an obvious choice, as is Douby. I think Mack would have a strong argument (per above), though he didn't really have the win/loss or postseason success of others. Beyond that..... my candidates are probably Shields, N'Diaye, Sanders, Baker, and Harper. From that group, for me, it'd come down to Baker or Harper.

Let's be fair.
He didn't hire Fred Hill, that was a cover story. Bob M made that hire.
Waters meat or nay bit have gotten is to the NCAA, but he inherited a situation that read awful on the court and behind the scenes and made us at least just normal until FHJ.

And he is an above average professional coach who demonstrated his competence at multiple institutions.
It couldn’t have that bad if waters was still playing mostly bannon’s guys in this third year .
I had multiple discussions with well informed people at the time of the Fred hill hire , and they all said Bob wasn’t behind it. That’s why you didn’t see any reporting of it.

Pike, Douby, "the fans", (I suppose you are right)

Harper is a better player than Baker

Now if I am making the damn mountain......
Marquis Webb, Mike Williams, Hamady, and Jalen Miller.

At the time, I heard it was Waters responding to strong guidance. But impossible to know now.

That's a great point.... Pike, Douby, Mack, the RAC

The RAC/fans totally deserve a place on the mountain.

Does Don Mattingly deserve to be in the Baseball HoF? NO, because it's not the "Hall of Pretty Good." Pikes transformed the program. That is clear. Baker? I could listen to the argument on the same basis as Pike. It is his play + his place in transforming RU. Harper? A better player but less a part of the cultural transformation. To me that is a NO. If Douby had comeback for a senior year, yes- but since he did not: NO. No one else is even close. Cliff could get there. If Mulcahy leads next years team to a sweet sixteen or better, he could get there. Ricky Shields, Mack, Sanders, Geoff Billet? If I had to explain it, it's not worth the breath. They were good on bad teams ...not even worthy of the Hall of Pretty Good.

So, you're saying that the 21st century doesn't warrant a Mt Rushmore at all, and it should be more of a statue?

1 NCAA Appearance and you want to carve up a beautiful natural mountain. I've lived through it and it has not been pretty. Before 2021 even our best were not all that good except Douby, who was like that girl from Tinsley in the mid 80's - It was a matter of convenience and when she left the lack of feeling on either side made it clear there was never really anything there.

A statue? Yes, I would donate to a giant animatronic statue of Pike standing on top of the RAC with lazar bean eyes.

What if the Mt. Rushmore were made out of mashed potatoes, a la Close Encounters, rather than a beautiful natural mountain?
