He was fired as many others were, he could not turn RU into a NCAA team

He failed at what is our goal

We had some decent seasons, a NIT bid or two
We lost too many road games

He was a good coach, but I would not honor him
Not worthy of Mt Rushmore
I'm not arguing he belongs on Rushmore. Only that he was good and important for the program.

And he should never have been fired and he was close to getting us to the NCAA's

He reignited the RAC. Without the exciting times he brought, the program might have completely died instead of surviving on life support.
Yeah that’s why I put him in. He stabilized the program and they went on the great NIT run under him.

If you just chop his stats after 4 years (and don't count this year), he'd have finished 5th in assists, 8th in steals, and 18th in points.

For reference to the 1976 team and games played: Sellers and Dabney played 114 games, Jordan played 116, Anderson played 120, and Bailey and Copeland played 121. Baker had 117 through the end of last season.

Among player who played in the 21st century (for purposes of this thread), and not including this year's stats for Baker (5th season)...

Not after seeing Choppin's post. Wow.
Officially converted.

Mack just had bad timing.

Came in as the 2nd leading scorer on a team with no seniors (and lost their #1/4/5 players to graduation the prior year), at the height of the Mike Rice practice drama. Sophomore year, Biruta leaves and he becomes leading scorer. Junior year, Carter leaves and Rice is fired for Eddie Jordan. Senior year, the #3/4/5 guys are all gone and Jordan's talking about rebounding not being in his coaching package.

As far as "all time" numbers, he was 2nd in steals, 3rd in FT% (.858), 4th in assists, 4th in 3P made, 7th in points scored, 7th in made FTs, 10th in 3P% (.369), and 12th in FG made. He holds the 2nd highest single season 3P% mark (.462), 4th and 5th highest single season FT% (.895 and .882), 6th and 10th highest single season assists, and tied himself for 10th in single season steals.

And he did all that at 5-10/175

Just incredible production on teams that were struggling with departures and bad coaching.

He doesn’t even average 12 PPG playing a position where scoring comes from. He plays at best average defense. He shoot’s a relatively low percentage.

Give him credit for making big shots.

on the NCAA team he was at best our 4th best player.

I still think he is a below average starting guard in the B1G.

But we're not talking about a "B1G Mt. Rushmore", or even a "Rutgers Mt. Rushmore".... we're talking about a "21st Century Rutgers Mt. Rushmore". There hasn't really been a ton of competition there given the success of the program and the amount of transfers of productive players during that time.

Baker may not be an elite player - but he's near the top of almost every list in our record book, has hit a ton of big shots, and is one of the key people responsible for getting us to the Dance.

jacob and Myles were the biggest reasons we got to the dance. They put the team on their back last year. Baker and Harper were important roles players the last 1/3 of the season.

Baker is having his best season of his career this year.

Those are all really good points - he was my favorite RU player when he was here...

Baker is having his best season of his career this year.
And both of them left to play for other schools, which makes it tough to put them on an RU Mt. Rushmore when they are currently wearing another uniform.

My bball coaching Rushmore would have to be Young, Wenzel, Waters, and Pikiell.
i would substitute Bill Foster for Waters as all time coaching Rushmore. Only one losing season (his first), 120-75 with 2 NITs when it was extremely difficult to make the post season. Waters was barely over .500.

No argument there. I should have made clear I only considered my time as a fan, since I started watching/attending RU games in 1975.

The OP is limiting it to 2000 until the present. But you’re right, if you look at before, most people’s Rushmores would look a lot different.

He was not good . 2 of his 5 teams were awful . 2 of the NIT teams were mostly bannon players . He “hired” Fred hill jr .

Waters is like an ex girlfriend that was a bad fit . People think she was good because she didn’t cheat on you with your best friend like the others, but still caused aggravation and you’re better off without her.

Let's be fair.
He didn't hire Fred Hill, that was a cover story. Bob M made that hire.
Waters meat or nay bit have gotten is to the NCAA, but he inherited a situation that read awful on the court and behind the scenes and made us at least just normal until FHJ.

And he is an above average professional coach who demonstrated his competence at multiple institutions.

His best season looks very good because it was inflated with NIT home games against easy teams
If he could have gotten RU to win some league away games we probably would have kept him, but as a fan, I supported the coaching change, because you don’t make the tourney with just home game wins

looking back, we should have fired Waters, but hired an experienced head coach, Hill was a hot name at the moment. But he was a mistake also

I feel like Hill was a pre-emptive move that many of us bought into at the time, myself included. Boy was I wrong. To @Loyal_2RU 's credit, he was always skeptical of the move and I think favored Brad Greenberg at the time, but I may have him confused with someone else.

I was against Hill from day 1. Some based on what I heard about Hill from Villanova and probably I was upset because I really like Waters.
