Honestly another choke job by squad….another error from a usually reliable Turner. It is getting harder to tune in on this bunch. Phillies fan for many years thru thick and thin….but…this bunch really testing me.
Usually reliable Turner? He’s a terrible defensive shortstop. Unless you mean he’s reliable at committing errors

Turner ranks 245 in career errors at shortstop which is better than Jimmy Rollins. He is first in errors so far this season. Terrible? This year I would agree but historically not so much

A rare blown save by Duran. smh
His numbers look good, but he usually makes it interesting by letting a few guys on before he shuts them down. You can only play with fire like that so many times before it burns you. Tonight it caught up to him.

His WHIP is 0.89 this season which ranks 4th among relief pitchers.

Wait, what? In about 800 less games and 5 less years, Rollins only has about 18 more errors. Turner is going to blow by that next year. Besides that simplistic stat - which doesn’t take into account how many balls you get to (I.e. range), he’s got negative WAR and Outs Above Average - further showing his deficiencies in range and converted plays like assists and putouts.

But let’s go with total errors. I guess Cal Ripken and Mark Belanger were ****** shortstops since they’re way up the total error board? Mark Belanger - only one of the 5 best defensive players to walk this earth.
And then there’s the GOAT, Ozzie Smith, all the way up at about the 81st spot in errors with 281!

What are we doing here? He isn’t consistent catching the ball, has mediocre range, and his arm isn’t that great. He’s a below average shortstop and is getting worse.

The Phillies defense this year is one of the leagues worst and having Turner up the middle right now is killing them

Oh….i certainly am not defending the Phillies defensive play this year. The problem with Tre is that you have a 33 year old player at a key position that requires speed/ range and a powerful arm etc. He has a no trade contract worth a total of approx $300 million thru 2033. Being that athletes at 33+ do not increase range , speed or arm strength with age ….what do you do with him? The Phil’s have a heck of a problem etc.BTW….his contract is 100% guaranteed….with no trade clause and a non deferred compensation clause to boot.

Oh, I know. We’re ******. We had to win in our window as the expensive core is all aging together. The big loss was the DBacks collapse. That was the year to win it

Phillies are 49-1 (98%) when they enter the 9th inning with a lead.

Edit: I wanted some historical perspective and discovered there are 13 teams all-time who went 80-0 or better in games they were leading going into the ninth. Best were the 1954 Indians, 97-0.

That’s something to save for spring training. (Although Turner did play some CF as a rookie.)
The Pirates did it with O’Neil Cruz after a high amount of errors at SS. It wasn’t a perfect transition, but Cruz adapted and was playing pretty well in CF before getting hurt.

Agree. It's been discussed before, like when the Phils were looking at Bichette. Maybe Miller will be ready to come up in 2027 and replace him.

They stink!
Maybe instead of being "buyers" at the trade deadline the Phillies should be "sellers". They are getting old, with several contracts that will seriously burden them looking ahead, and one of the worst minor league prospect pools in the major leagues. That is not a recipe for a bright future. Maybe DD has to take a second look at what is best for the team beyond 2026.

All-Star Brandon Marsh is batting .148 for July with 2 RBI's and 24 Strike-outs.

So many streaky hitters on this team.
I think the whole Phillies team is "streaky". I still think they make the wild card and hopefully they're on a hot hitting streak for the playoffs. Gotta keep the faith.

Maybe too soon, but is it time to tear this team down and get some cheaper, young talent to build on before it’s too late? Adding another veteran, making a ton of money, at the deadline probably isn’t enough to get them a ring and doesn’t serve any benefit to the long term. My buddy has been saying this for two years. The roster is broken and they aren’t admitting it. They missed their window. He was against them resigning Schwarber as well. With that said, as a Pirates fan at heart, I applaud and appreciate Phillies management working to win now, every season. It does make for some exciting baseball.
